I’ve been surprised by how many homeschoolers I’ve gotten to know through my dojo. My dojo? What’s a dojo? Aren’t dojos extinct? No, the flightless bird called a dodo is extinct due to those durn pigs and dogs but that’s another story.
I’ve been training in mixed martial arts for most of the last decade and I’ve been astonished by the number of homeschooling families that have gotten deeply involved with my dojo, Steve Lavallee’s MMA School.
We have a kempo base for kata, muy taih kick boxing for sparing, and BJJ for self defense. We also do some XMA katas and some weapons. The only place that I’ve seen this discussed is on the eclectic homeschool forum featuring such discussion as ”How Many Books Do You Have Checked Out From the Public Library Right Now?”
I have 73, lol. Technically, it’s a little less than that because I returned some that they have not checked in yet, but still, that is sooo many!
I can check out 100 books from my library (haven’t done that yet, 73 is definitely my highest number). And I can have 25 ‘on hold’ or ‘scheduled’. And normally, since I started homeschooling, I have about 20-25 on hold at all times.
Will this slow down? I want to read everything I hear about, it’s crazy. I am hoping I will get a handle on how many books I have on hold and checked out. But my librarian says it’s normal for the homeschoolers to have so many books checked out.

Everyone is calling Google+ the platform of the “early adopters” – - you know, those people who are some of the first to try new tools and experiment with new technologies. I’m convinced that’s why I see so many homeschoolers hanging out over there!
If ever there were a group of folks who are known for researching and investigating new and different ways of integrating technology into everyday life – - it’s homeschoolers!! We were playing around with educational tech LONG before public schools were coming around to the idea. I firmly believe that if you want to find out where the trendsetters are in terms of experimenting with new and innovative ways to educate children, simply peek into the windows of almost any homeschooling family.
Google+ is becoming popular among homeschoolers because they are always on the prowl for new information. And G+ makes it incredibly easy to share and procure information on most every conceivable subject. Unlike other traditional social networks, on G+ you don’t have to have gone to high school with someone to pick their brains. You can connect with people just because they…
- work with desert animals in the Mohave
- are researching differences between string theory vs loop quantum gravity
- offer free samples of world music for kids
- work as a page at the White House
Imagine a world where your kids can research information on owls not by reading about it in a 10-year-old text, but by following the stream of someone who is interning at a raptor center and cataloguing their daily duties!

I think working with homeschool families is one of the most inspirational parts of my career. So many interesting ideas, different family challenges, different types of successes, different techniques and approaches to education and life. It’s amazing to me that humans can be so different.
I was just reading some secular homeschooling stories thinking how different it is from the Christian Homeschool Perspective. There is some interesting materialwith a testimonial by a Christian homeschooler discussing her selection of Time4Learning as the best choice for her children despite it being a not being Biblically-centered curriculum. Then the author, MamaMary, invites others to discuss it with her on the Christian Perspective section of the Time4Learning Parents forum.
