Friends and crocodiles
…is the title of a play by Stephen Poliakoff which was shown on TV a few days ago.
I'd never seen anything of his before but N. is a great fan so we watched it together and I'm a convert! It was absolutely gripping.
We discussed aferwards why it appealed so much and decided it was partly because it's such an astutely observed saga of an era: the eighties and nineties which we well remember. The clothes, the IT – wonderful. Of course, it was also superbly told and cast. If you have the chance to see it, keep an eye on the minor characters – each has his or her own story, as do the chinese lanterns and, of course, the croc.
The downside was the nudity and language – yet, while in so many things these are gratuitous, in Friends and Crocodiles they were used to demonstate the nature of the characters and to develop emotional tension. Paul's comments about the pleasant atmosphere in the pub – while Lizzie keeps half an eye on the woman in the background – say quite a lot about his character!
I think it's part of a Poliakoff season, so we'll keep an eye on the schedules.
