• Jan. 13, 2007 - More on the rope suspension bridge
I didn't mention before, but the company we consulted regarding purchasing a rope suspension bridge, was WAY out of our price range. But my husband and I visited a garden/nursery in Ft. Worth that just so happened to have the exact type of rope suspension bridge, covering a similar span, that we want. It was originally built in the 1930s and they are replacing the wooden slats and cables now. But otherwise, the structure is sound and offers us an excellent example.
My husband does have a Mechanical Engineering degree and feels comfortable with replicating the design with some improvements on our own property. We will use plastic or composite slats now available as a much more durable alternative to conventional wood decking material. We plan to use heavier duty piping for the structure and vinyl coated cable. It will be really fun when we have the bridges in.
I did ask for suggestions at the Mother Earth News Forum and got one really helpful link: Building Bridges |
