Echinacea Woes

We have another flu in our house. This winter season was full of colds and the flu and it seems Spring will be the same. The children have a multivitamin and Vitamin C each day, but some of these bugs are just too strong to be knocked on the head with this alone. I read somewhere recently that Echinacea can almost halve the time you have a cold if the dose is strong enough. So, I visited the health food store a couple of days ago for a bottle of the strongest stuff I could find, much to the children's consternation.

This morning, John, started with the symptoms. So, out came the bottle and a double dose administered. He grimaced and complained and suggested there must be some other way to take the stuff. It tasted too bitter. The health professional told me this was the best way, I assured him. While we were discussing whether or not he would take another dose when he arrived home from work, we heard coughing up in the children's bedroom.

I thought it sounded like Robert's cough. He hadn't been given the Echinacea yesterday because he appeared to be better. I questioned Jamie and Robert (they sleep in the same room). But each one said it wasn't him that was coughing. Reluctantly, Jamie admitted to perhaps clearing his throat, and Robert cottoned on to this idea and said he was just clearing his throat, too. 'We don't need Echinacea,' they said in unison. 'Give it to Dad. He sounds sick.'

This small bottle of liquid has caused mayhem in this house. It may knock the flu on the head, but at what price? Everyone has turned on his fellow man in order to save himself. 'Take him, not me. He needs it more than I do.' Talk about another version of preferring your brother ahead of yourself.

Well, the bottle is only small, it will be empty soon, and maybe I just won't get another one.

Love

The health foods store we shop has a free bi-monthly magazine and I just picked up the newest issue yesterday. I came across an article in it that made me think of this entry here at your blog. Here is some information from the article (about fighting colds and flu).......

* Take 1000mg of olive leaf extract three times a day for 3 to 7 days. If it causes nausea, cut the dose in half. This is helpful in fighting colds.

* Take 1000mg of echinacea (standardized extract) a day. Echinacea can help enhance your body's natural defenses.

* Suck on a zinc lozenge 5 to 8 times a day. Each lozenge should have at least 10 to 20mg of zinc (any less will not be effective). This may reduce the time it takes to recover from a cold by about 40%.

* Try oscillococcimun (a homeopathic remedy) if you have flu-like symptoms (chills, fever, aches). It helps to speed healing and eases discomfort. It's best to take this early in the infection (as soon as you have symptoms).

* Take 2 astragalus capsules (250 to 500mg each) 3 times a day. This acts as an antiviral.

* Take up to 3000 mg of vitamin C a day to reduce symptoms of colds by an average of 23%.

* Males should drink 13 8-ounce servings of water a day and females should drink 9 8-ounce servings of water a day.
