My Plot of Green

Posted in Nature Study
Since we have just now been living on this "plot of green" , to quote Barb,  for a year, I am still discovering new plants.

Here is a fern I found.  I think it is called Japanese Painted Fern or Pictum, a common wild fern, according to Better Homes and Gardens New Complete Guide to GardeningBut that's not all, The Perennial Plant Association has named Pictum the 2004 Perennial Plant of the Year, saying that this perennial low-maintenance Japanese painted fern is one of the showiest ferns for shade gardens. Did you know that such an award existed?  I also like the moss covered rock next to it .

And this little wild flower is near our backdoor.    At first I was wondering if it was Poison Ivy.  I am still trying to find out it's name.

I hope to post a garden update this weekend.  Things are really growing well with all the rainy cool weather.  How are things in your yard?

If you'd like to see more show and tell entries, please see Mary aka Canadagirl.

Ohhh I just love your nature pics. I have very fond memories of this fern. The house I grew up in had a very shady yard. And these ferns were everywhere. Plus our backyard connected to a patch of woods I played in as a child. I LOVE the moss on the rock. I need to get going on my nature notebooking ! I haven't and I am sad. Maybe I need to start with taking pics and that would get the kids going. [0=

I miss all your sweet notes. I look forward to when you are around again. You are valued my friend.

Blessings and ((hugs)) my SSiC

Beautiful ferns!

I think your wildflower may be aniseroot? Check it out here: http://www.kywildflowers.info/latespring/dscf6551.html

It's hard to tell without seeing the blooms up close. If that's not it, you can look at some other similar ones here:

Happy Gardening!

Those nature photos are great. I am not sure, but I don't think the plants are poison ivy. We have some and it looks a little different.

I love your ferns and the moss. I dug some up in the north woods and put them in front of my house in the shade. I love the look, as it gets mossy there, too. Don't think they're prize winners, though. They all look sorta alike to me, as I've never really looked that closely at them. ha.

Hey, those are some really nice pics. :') I had some Japanese Painted Fern at my old house. I didn't get to bring it with me to this one. :'( I miss it. Worse, I know it got no attention from the new homeowner. *sniff sniff*

I'm not sure what that mystery wildflower is...yet. I'll see if I can jog the old memory into some sort of motion on that one.

We're getting a lot of green. Unfortunately, it's green with lovely, fluffy yellow flowers, if you know what I mean. (Hint: roar)

Soon I'll be able to put things out. I can't wait!

It's neat discovering what's growing on your plot of land, isn't it? If I understood you right, you've only been where your at for a year. I have enjoyed the same thing - each year we have discovered new things growing here - lots of berries!

Do you think it could be Queen Anne's Lace? It's hard to tell from the picture...just a thought. :-) Thanks for sharing the pictures.
