Apr. 3, 2008 Two More Great Books
Apr. 2, 2008 What's on My Nightstand
I am devouring these books...
This book has been on my shelf for a long time. It started my dream of one day having a small garden to tend with my children. I got this book when we had our first house. The house did not turn out to be my garden house. It was my baby house with 3 babies in 3+ years! The next house did not turn out to be my garden house either. Maybe this house? Although it has trees and finding a spot is going to be challenging.

A good friend told me about Lasagna Gardening awhile ago. I wish I had read it last fall. I could have had my lasagna baking already!

This book I got because I had already read and loved Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew

So do you have any good gardening books to recommend? |

Jan. 8, 2008 Helpful Resource

It arrived! We received our Zoo Guide from Answers in Genesis!
Here is a great review by another mom.
We plan to take our copy to the zoo soon, especially if this great weather holds. But even if you don't have a zoo nearby, I think this would be a great addition to any library. The full color pictures of animals captured my children's attention as they enjoyed this book right on the living room sofa. The information about each animal includes design, features, fun facts and created kind members, plus class, order, family, genus, size, weight, diet and habitat. What more could you ask for? Well, the Aquarium Guide would be nice to have too, but I'll be thankful for the zoo guide for now.

Dec. 29, 2007 Winter Studies Book List (in progress)
- Keeping a Nature Journal by Clare Walker Leslie & Charles Roth
Again, this book just keeps me so encouraged. Their winter Journal section is excellent!
- Handbook of Nature Study by Anna Botsford Comstock
Climate and Weather, Plants , Mammals... among others.
- The Nature Notes of an Edwardian Lady by Edith Holden
Her winter journal pages are great examples of bird study and are just plain lovely to look at!
- Exploring Nature in Winter by Alan Cvancara
"Guide to activities, adventures and projects for the Winter Naturalist." I particularly enjoyed the part about learning to like winter! If your library doesn't have this book, I am sure there are other similar titles under "winter nature study"available. Leslie & Roth mention one in their book, Guide to Nature in Winter by Donal Stokes.
- The Bird Feeder Book by Donald and Lillian Stokes
There were many, many good bird feeding books at my library. I just chose this one because I knew that Leslie & Roth liked another of the Stoke's books.
- The Urban Naturalist by Steven D. Garber
This book had some good descriptions of animals and how they adjust to urban settings. I will use the section on squirrels. Again, you could probably find others just as good if your library doesn't have this exact title.
- Smith & Hawkin's Forcing, etc, The indoor gardener's guide to bringing bulbs, branches & houseplants into bloom By Katherine Whiteside
Since I am planning to learn how to force a bulb this winter, I decided to a book on the subject would be in order. This book is filled with excellent photographs by Richard Felber. I also plan to go back to the library and look for a book on "indoor gardens". There were many available. I just ran out of room in my arms!

Nov. 1, 2007 Library Finds
Just look what I found today at the library in the new books! It was as if they ordered it for me!

Each butterfly has several pages dedicated to it's lifecycle. Gorgeous photos show us their lives from egg to adult with lots of helpful information about the butterfly as well. Field notes, maps, life cycle seasons and what they like to eat are included for each butterfly in addition. |
