Jul. 5, 2008 Nature Photo Walk
We went for a nature walk today at our favorite living history museum. Here are some of the photos. And by the way, I am also learning how to use Picasa Web Albums, so I hope these work!

Apr. 29, 2008 Rails to Trails Hike with Daddy
We are blessed to live across the street from a wonderful rails to trails path, the Monon Greenway. This past Sunday, while I made freezer dinners to take to my grandfather, Daddy led the troupes on a hike. Here are some of their pictures.

It's hard to see, but they spotted a Downy Woodpecker along the way... I am so proud of their observation skills, on their own initiative. They are taking ownership!

Then they stopped for some refreshment...

Nov. 2, 2007 Weekly Nature Walk
Carey Grove Park, Carmel IN
56 degrees, sunny and just plain lovely! Oh, how a crisp fall day soothes the soul.
"During autumn the attention of the children should be attracted to the leaves by their gorgeous colors. It is well to use this interest to cultivate their knowledge of the forms of leaves of trees; but the teaching of tree species to the young child should be done quite incidentally and guardedly. If the teacher says to the child bringing a leaf, "This a white-oak leaf, " the child will soon quite unconsciously learn that leaf by name."

We are fortunate to have this little park nearby. All of the trees are marked and there is a great variety to study. I have chosen this park for our year long study of trees. We will visit during each season and record how the trees change.
Come take a walk with us...

Sugar Maple
Sugar Maple leaf (we discovered that scanning leaves, making color copies and putting them into our journals is less messy, if not as fun as pressing them. We also have a dandy press that we are enjoying as well.)

Fall Webworm found! Little did we know that this little guy is thought of a pest. Oh well. We won't tell him. I am proud of my daughter's developing eye for finding nature. |

Found these in the yard near the back door.

This one is very small and made of pine needles. I wonder who could have made it?
