The WHO office of Western Washington sent the following message as a reminder. Remember to declare your intention to homeschool by filing your Declaration of Intent (DOI) form this fall! Declaring is an obligation of parents under the Home-based Instruction law. The DOI is to be filed with your local superintendent by Remember, only include children ages 8 and older, and only include their name, age (not date of birth), and mark the one box only if you've chosen to qualify to homeschool by working with a certificated person to supervise your studies. That's all that's required by law! Parents often make our office aware when their school district's DOI is out of compliance with the law. Some districts ask or insist for more information than required in statute. Check out our sample of the correct DOI form and our Declaration of Intent Education Packet. We suggest that you make a photocopy of your completed DOI for times when you need it to demonstrate your status as homeschoolers (for instance, to get free Puyallup Fair tickets). |

"Homeschoolers" Day at the Spokane Interstate Fair IS....
of Fair grounds (go to the far Southeast corner back where the buses park) . Make a copy of the wristband for each member and put clear tape over the top of it to keep the ink from running. Write your contact name and number on the underside, Where it can be accessed if a child gets lost, but strangers can not see it. Cover it with tape also to keep it from wearing off. Tape it on the wrist of each person in your party. Go to the correct gate on the right date and time and have fun at the Fair.High-light and Copy Wristbands from below and paste into a word processor document and print out on your printer at home. Cut apart and tape onto wrist. We've found this to be the safest way to get our children to the fair. Please don't enter the fair grounds until 10:00 am on Monday, Sept. 8th, 2008

Taking off and landing on the rocky terrain for sample inspection and gathering would be nearly impossible. So what's one solution? Check this out. Below is a letter from J. Mike Smith the president of HSLDA about the California Homeschooling Illegality Drama and the results achieved by the actions taken by many people and groups. You may be interested in how that turned out…. A Great Victory for California HomeschoolersDear HSLDA Members and Friends: In a unanimous decision, the California Court of Appeal for the Second Appellate District today ruled that "California statutes permit home schooling as a species of private school education." Today's decision stands in stark contrast to the opinion this same three-judge panel issued in February, which would have made California the only state in the union to outlaw home education had it remained in effect. "It is unusual for an appellate court to grant a petition for rehearing as this court did in March," said HSLDA Chairman Mike Farris, "but it is truly remarkable for a court to completely reverse its own earlier opinion. We thank you for your prayers and give God the glory for this great victory." When the court vacated its earlier decision on March 25, 2008, it invited interested organizations to file friend-of-the-court briefs. "I have never seen such an impressive array of people and organizations coming to the defense of homeschooling," said Farris, who was one of the attorneys who argued the case on rehearing along with Alliance Defense Fund attorney Jeff Shafer, who represented the father. The father was also represented by Gary Kreep of the United States Justice Foundation. California's three largest homeschool organizations, California Homeschool Network, Homeschool Association of California and Christian Home Education Association joined together in one brief to defend the right of all parents to homeschool. HSLDA, Family Protection Ministries and Focus on the Family also joined in a separate brief. Numerous other private organizations came to the defense of home education as did California's governor, attorney general, and superintendent of public instruction. We are extremely grateful to all of the organizations who worked tirelessly to protect and preserve homeschooling freedom in California. We are also thankful for you, our members, for your prayers and support during this trying season. The freedom to homeschool is a precious gift from God. But keeping it free requires vigilance and perseverance. We must continue to work together diligently to preserve this precious freedom in California and elsewhere. Sincerely, J. Michael SmithHSLDA President |
