An Apple A Day Unit

Posted in Holidays

This short unit for one day was created by Lynn from Homeschooling with Heart.

Apple Butter Recipe with Poem (submitted by Cindy L.)
I thought this apple butter packaged in a baby food jar and tied up
with some gingham and raffia would make a lovely gift for the children to make
their parents at Christmas. This poem would be attached:

We peeled the apples
and sliced them small,
cooked them in water
then mashed them all.
We added some sugar
and cinnamon to taste,
back in the cook pot
till thick like paste.
We'll spread it on bread
you and I will share,
the apple butter I made
with love and great care.

Apple Match
Draw a large apple tree on heavy paper for a bulletin board, or on a
file folder to use as a game. Color the tree. Color apples of different sizes on
tree. Cut out apples of those same sizes on paper. The children match the
apples to those drawn on the tree. I use velcro on them so they stick in place.

Apple Prints
On a large piece of paper, cut out a large shape of an apple. Slice
apples in half vertically. Using red and green paint, have the children dip
the apple halves in the paint and then make their prints on the large apple.

Suggested Reading

"The Apple Book" Martin
"Apples" Nonny Hogrogian
"Apple Pigs" Ruth Orbach

Fingerplay
Way up high on the apple tree
Two little apples smiled at me
I shook the tree as hard as I could
Down came the apples
Mmmm, mmmm, mmmm, they were good!!

Dry Apple Rings
Peel, core, and cut apples into rings. Dip into salted water for 15
minutes. Dry for two weeks. Enjoy! You can make raisins from grapes the same way.

Paper Plate Apple
Use a small paper plate and have the kids glue scraps of red fabric,
paper, or tissue paper all over it. Add a construction paper green stem. Real
easy for even the youngest kids.

Apple Smiles
Cut washed apples into 1/4 's or 1/8 's. Spread peanut butter on one
side of the slice. Place mini marshmallows on the peanut butter (teeth). Place
another peanut butter apple slice on top to complete your smiling apple
mouth.

Apple Treats
Peel and cube pieces of apple - enough so each child has about a
tablespoon of cubes. Give each child a refr. biscuit found in tubes at the grocery
store. They should smash it pretty much flat. They'll love doing that!! Spread
the biscuit with a little butter. Add the apple cubes to the middle and sprinkle
with a little sugar and cinnamon. Fold the biscuit in half and seal with a
fork or fingers. Bake in the oven for 12-15 minutes of until the biscuit is
golden brown. The apples will be hot, so tell them to be careful.

Story of Johnny Appleseed
Johnny
Appleseed's real name was John Chapman. All his life, Johnny
loved apples. He loved to look at them and to eat them. And he loved to
take care of apple trees.
Johnny also loved to travel. One day he heard that there were no
apple trees out west. So he set out on foot, carrying a walking stick and wearing
his cooking pot on his head. On his back he carried a bag of books and a bag of
apple seeds.

As he walked, he planted apple seeds. Behind him he left a trail of
young apple trees. As time passed, people began to call him Johnny Appleseed. He
was greatly loved by everyone.

Apple Cakes
Ingredients
2 apples (or 1 cup of chunky applesauce)
2 cups pancake mix
2 eggs
1 cup milk
1 tsp. cinnamon
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup cooking oil

1. Wash apples. Leaving the skins on, either grate them or chop them
finely (or use 1 cup chunky applesauce)
2. Mix all the ingredients except the oil. Mix until smooth.
3. Heat an electric skillet to about 325 degrees F. Coat the cooking
surface with about 1 tsp of the oil.
4. Drop two tablespoons of batter for each apple cake into the
skillet. Fry two minutes on each side, or until golden brown. Recoat the pan with oil
and make the next batch.
5. Drain apples cakes thoroughly on paper towels. They should be
eaten while warm. Top with applesauce if desired.

The Star Inside
Slice apples in the middle horizontally and you will find a "star".
Dip the apples in a mixture of lemon juice and water to keep them from
turning brown.

Variations of Apples
Talk about the different kinds of apples. Have cards made up with
these adjective words: dark red, yellow, green, red-green, round, round,
five buttons on bottom, oval, oval, slightly tart, tart, sweet, sweet, Have one
of each of these kinds of apples to discuss the color, shape, and taste. Match
each card with the apple it belongs.
*Red Delicious - dark red, five buttons on the bottom, oval, sweet
*Golden Delicious - yellow, oval, sweet
*Granny Smith - green, round, tart
*McIntosh - red-green, round, slightly tart

Applesauce
Applesauce is easy to make. Five pounds of apples yield about 2
quarts of applesauce. Peel, core and slice apples into quarters. Put in a pot
and partcially cover with water. Then boil the apples until they are
soft. Using a potato masher or a blender, mush the apples into suace. Add sugar
and cinnamon to taste.

RESURRECTION COOKIES

Posted in Holidays

We recommend baking these cookies on the Saturday night before Easter.  But before you start, read the full recipe and collect all the materials and ingredients needed.  As you make the cookies with your child, read aloud the Scripture story of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection where inserted in the recipe (highlighted in black after each numbered direction).

Ingredients:

1 cup pecan halves
1 teaspoon white vinegar
3 egg whites (room temperature for best results)
pinch of salt
1-cup sugar

Ziploc type baggie

Wooden Spoon

Tape

BIBLE

Preheat oven to 300°F degrees.  Place the pecans in a plastic freezer bag.  Let your child break the pecans into small pieces by beating them with a wooden spoon.  Explain that after Jesus was arrested, Roman soldiers beat him.

Then Pilate took Jesus and had Him whipped.  The soldiers twisted thorns together to make a crown.  They put it on Jesus’ head.  Then they put a purple robe on Him.  They went up to Him again and again.  They kept saying, “We honor you, king of the Jews!”  And they hit Him in the face. John 19:1-3(NlrV)

Now, ask your child to smell and taste the vinegar.  Add 1 teaspoon vinegar to a bowl.  Explain that Jesus was offered vinegar to drink while He hung on the cross.

Later Jesus said,I am thirsty.”  He knew that everything was now finished.  He knew that what Scripture said must come true.  A jar of wine vinegar was there.  So they soaked a sponge in it.  They put the sponge on a stem of the hyssop plant.  Then they lifted it up to Jesus’ lips.

After Jesus drank he said, “It is finished.”  Then He bowed His head and died. John 19:28-30(NlrV)

Add the 3 egg whites to the vinegar.  Discuss with your child that eggs represent life.  Explain that Jesus gave his life in order to give us life.

"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.  I have come so they can have life.  I want them to have it in the fullest possible way.

“I am the good shepherd.  The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep." John 10:10-11 (NlrV)

Sprinkle a pinch of salt into your child’s hands.  Allow them to taste a tiny bit and shake the remainder into the bowl.  Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus’ followers.

A large number of people followed Jesus.  Some were women whose hearts were filled with sorrow.  They cried loudly because of Him. Luke 23:27 (NlrV)

Gradually add 1 cup of sugar to the bowl while beating ingredients on high with a mixer.  Explain that the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us.  He wants us to know we belong to Him.

Taste and see that the Lord is good.  Blessed is the man who goes to Him for safety. Psalm 34:8 (NlrV)

God loved the world so much that He gave His one and only Son.  Anyone who believes in Him will not die but will have eternal life. John 3:16 (NlrV)

Egg whites are ready when they are glossy, white, and stiff peaks form (peaks stand straight when beaters are removed).  Share how the color white represents purity and how Jesus can cleanse us of our sins.

"Come.  Let us talk some more about this matter,” said the Lord.  “Even though your sins are bright red, they will be white as snow.  Even though they are deep red, they will be white like wool.” Isaiah 1:18 (NlrV)

Now, add the nuts and fold in gently.  Drop the mixture by teaspoon on a cookie sheet covered with wax paper.  Explain that these mounds represent the rocky tomb where Jesus’ body was laid.

As evening approached, a rich man came from the town of Arimathea.  His name was Joseph.  He had become a follower of Jesus.  He went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body.  Pilate ordered that it be given to him.

Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth.  He placed it in his own tomb that he had cut out of the rock.  He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb.  Then he went away. Matthew 27:57-60 (NlrV)

Put the cookie sheet in the oven.  Then close the door and turn the oven off immediately.

Give your child a piece of tape to seal the tomb (oven door).  Explain the fact that Jesus’ tomb was sealed.

“Take some guards with you,” Pilate answered.  “Go. Make the tomb as secure as you can.”  So they went and made the tomb secure.  They put a seal on the stone and placed some guards on duty.  Matthew 27:65-66 (NlrV)

Go to bed!  Explain that your child may feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight.  To a much greater extent Jesus’ friends were sad when He died and was placed in the tomb.

“What I’m about to tell you is true.  You will cry and be full of sorrow while the world is full of joy.  You will be sad, but your sadness will turn into joy.”

“That’s the way it is with you.  Now it’s your time to be sad.  But I will see you again.  Then you will be full of joy.  And no one will take your joy away.” John 16:20 & 22 (NlrV)

Do not open the oven until the following morning.  Allow your children to examine the cookies.  They will form small mounds and have a cracked side.  When the children taste them, they will discover that the cookies are hollow representing that on the first Easter, Jesus’ friends were surprised to find the tomb empty.

The Sabbath day was not over.  It was dawn on the first day of the week.  Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.

There was a powerful earthquake.  An angel of the Lord came down from heaven.  The angel went to the tomb.  He rolled back the stone and sat on it.  His body shone like lightning.  His clothes were white as snow.  The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

The angel said to the women, “Don’t be afraid.  I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.  He is not here!  He has risen, just as He said He would!  Come and see the place where He was lying.  Go quickly!  Tell His disciples, ‘He has risen from the dead.  He is going ahead of you into Galilee.  There you will see Him.’  Now I have told you.”

So the women hurried away from the tomb.  They were afraid, but they were filled with joy.  They ran to tell the disciples.

Suddenly Jesus met them.  “Greetings!” He said.

They came to Him, took hold of his feet and worshipped Him.  Matthew 28:1-9 NlrV)

Little Jelly Beans

Posted in Holidays

You will need different colors of jelly beans to help you tell the story. Thanks to Marie  for sharing this with us!

Little jelly beans
Tell a story true
A tale of Father's love
Just for me and you.
GREEN is for the waving palms
BLUE for the skies above
BROWN for the soft earth where
People sat hearing HIS love.
A SPECKLED bean for fish and sand
RED for precious wine
And BLACK is for the sin HE washed
From your soul and mine.
PURPLE'S for the sadness of
HIS family and friends,
And White is for the glory of the
Day HE rose again.
Now you've heard the story
You know what each color means
The story of our Father's love
Told by some jelly beans.

(The Empty Tomb)

1 pkg frozen bread/dinner rolls dough-thawed
1 pkg large marshmellows
margarine or butter melted
cinnamon-sugar

On baking sheet
Flatten each roll and place 1 marshmellow inside then form dough around it and pinch closed.
Place closed side down on pan.
Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.
Cool for a short time then remove or they may stick to the pan.
Brush with melted margarine or butter and sprinkle cinnamon sugar over them.
These are very sweet rolls for Easter morning.  Best if served hot.
