Here are some tips I have discovered over the years:
How to teach left from right: Hold up both hands directly in front of you. Hold your thumb down to the side. Your left hand will make a "L" for left, while the L on your right hand will be backwards.
Nouns--
1. Have your child pick a letter of the alphabet. Then give your child one minute to think up nouns beginning with that letter.
2. Give your child an old magazine. Make a noun collage with pictures your child cuts from the
magazine.
Verbs--
1. Have your child think of an action verb and then act it out. (examples: walk, run, hop, skip.)
Then, act out a verb yourself and have him guess what it is.
Game to work with nouns, verbs, adverbs, or adjectives--
Have your child think of a word that begins with the letter "A". Have him tell you a noun, verb, whatever, that begins with this letter. Then, you think of one that begins with "B." Next, he thinks of a word that begins with "C" and so on down the alphabet. Take turns and see how many times you can make it through the alphabet. You will be surprised by your creativity!
Spelling Game-- I usually have my son do words based on a certain theme-- "ou" and "ow"
words for example. This is an activity he loves to do-- he draws a picture such as a house for "ou" words and then writes all his spelling words that have that sound in it inside the picture.
We also like to play spelling hangman. Play just like regular hangman, but use your spelling words. See how many words you can get correct before you fill up the hangman!
