Blueberries For Sal
Posted by Amy on January 30, 2008
This semester I am co-teaching a preschool class at our co-op. It’s going to be great fun and as along as I am typing up lessons plans, I thought I might as well as post them here in hopes of blessing someone else. Our class is based on classic children’s picture books and the book "Picture Book Activities" by Trish Kuffner.
It’s my turn to teach the 1st week (this Friday) and I’m using "Blueberries for Sal" by McClosky. Plan for the 45 minutes class is:
1. Gather in a circle to read our story "Blueberries for Sal"
2. Encourage them to make the "kurplink, kurplank, kurplunk" noises.
3. Ask questions about Little Sal and Little Bear
4. Snack time - blueberries, crackers spread with blueberry jam.
(you could also bake blueberry muffins with your child)
5. Go on a "blueberry hunt". Hide 1inch blue circles (I have pre-cut out) around the room and have the children collect the "berries". When they are done they will dump them in a large canning jar so I can stir them up and make "jam".
6. Color pictures with different shades of blue.
7. Read a non-fiction book about bears.
If there is still time we will:
8. Sing "Going on a Bear Hunt"
9. Sing "Bear went over the Mountain"
10. Read story again

I love that book!
It is one of the "Before Five In a Row" selections, and so I'm looking forward to reading it with my little ones when we do that next year!
