Driving for the victory
Feb. 4, 2007 - Congratulations Colts!
| Being sports fans, Super Bowl Sunday is a must see. I was rooting for the Colts, but really didn't care who won. Both of the coaches are wonderful Christian men and both teams did a great job this year. Congratulations to the Colts and all of Indianapolis. Good Job Tony Dungy and Payton Manning. It was a good game and that's what really matters in football. |

Feb. 4, 2007 - Never a dull moment
About 2 weeks before Christmas, DH decided that completely redoing the kitchen and dining room would be a good idea. Our upstairs is an open concept with a vaulted ceiling, so the kitchen, dining room and living room are all one big room with a half wall separating the kitchen from the living room area. He decided that he wanted to turn the kitchen/dining room into a large eat in kitchen. He has torn up both the kitchen and dining room floors, removed all the kitchen cabinets, removed the sink and removed the dishwasher. We have been living in a construction zone for about 6 weeks now and it is getting harder and harder to be patient. The new cabinets arrived last week and DH and a friend from work put many of them up this morning. Things looked like they were headed in the right direction till DH put up the last base cabinet on the long wall and found that it didn't match the upper cabinets. That wouldn't matter too much except that we are having a long cabinet over our fridge and there is a wall that goes between the fridge and the cabinets that needs to be equal between the top and bottom cabinets. To fix the problem (which is only a 1/4 inch difference) involves taking down 4 upper cabinets so that puts the cutting of the countertop off for a few more days. Normally it wouldn't matter too much, but DH has planned to take Big Sister to visit his sister in AZ for a week starting February 13th. I told him that I had to have a functioning kitchen by then. It didn't have to be finished, but it did have to have things like a functioning sink, dishwasher, fridge, stove and countertops. That isn't a done deal like it was a couple of days ago.
Never a dull moment here |

Jan. 8, 2007 - Ringing in the New Year
Well, I finally got around to blogging in 2007. I am a little slow on the uptake
We had a good Christmas and New Years. The kids got more than they needed, but not as much as they wanted. Their great aunt gave them $25 each and told them to spend it as they wanted. Well we set up a family bank on a spread sheet that I keep in my PDA. That way we don't have cash hanging around that can get lost or aquired by other people. They are very frugal when the money is theirs .
When Mom is spending money, they have no problem asking for everything, when it is their money though, I can't get them to spend it on what it was intended for...gifts for them.
Our resolutions for this year are to get our finances in order (or at least under control), continue the healthy lifestyle we started last year, finish the remodeling of the kitchen and keep God as the center of our lives in good times and bad.
Welcome 2007, it is sure to be an interesting year. |

Dec. 7, 2006 - My son the Star
Big Brother made Star Scout tonight. He wants to be an Eagle and he is well on his way. We are so proud of him. He wants to be a Tae Kwon Do Black Belt too and he is more than half way there. He is a very goal oriented kid and I don't see him not achieving anything he sets out to do.

Nov. 16, 2006 - I don't think I will ever understand this
I had to go shopping today and I went to our local mall. Outside the Best Buy I saw a line of tents with people sitting in chairs. As I went into the store, I asked the people what they were doing there. I found out that Play Station 3 is going on sale tomorrow morning and these folks wanted to be the first ones there. I just can't understand why folks do that till I saw that Ebay already has auctions that are selling the PS 3 for over $1500. I guess that if someone wants to sleep in a tent on concrete they can, but even for that big a profit, you wouldn't catch me sleeping in a tent during a terrible rainstorm with high winds. The forcasters are calling for up to 3 inches of rain and have a flood warning up. I just don't think I will ever understand what would cause these folks to camp out in awful weather just for a video game system. |

Nov. 4, 2006 - An Editorial Comment
It's education we're talking about here. If you go to public school, study hard and do your homework you might be smart enough to be to be accepted into the US Military. If you don't, you will probably end up as a Senator from Massachusettes.

Nov. 4, 2006 - Monarch Days
A few days ago Little Sister found a Monarch butterfly who obviously didn't get the go south memo. It was alive, but only barely. We tried to keep it alive, but it just didn't happen. We tried making sugar water, but only had Spenda. The poor fella died in the night.
Little Sister wanted to keep the butterfly, but I had no idea of what to do. I went to the Discovery store figuring that they would know what to do, but they didn't. The nice man at the store sent me to the craft store. I got a "floating frame" which is 2 pieces of glass which the butterfly is displayed between. It looks very nice, and she is happy so it was worth it.
In the spring we are hoping to get the butterfly canopy and raise them from catepillar to release. We have a lot of milkweed around so they will have plenty to eat. I am going to try to upload a picture of our butterfly if I get the time. |

Oct. 20, 2006 - Survived the fair
Well, we all survived the International fair. Big Brother and Big Sister both spoke and they did a good job, or so I was told. Little Brother and Little Sister had a very hard time standing still and keeping their mouths quiet. I took them out while the presenters showed off their projects. I was disappointed that I missed the kid's presentations, but one of the moms video taped the whole thing and has said she will be happy to make me a copy. Homeschoolers are so wonderful. I was going to bring my own video camera, but I couldn't find any blank tapes. I never did find one so it wasn't as bad as it could have been. I think that their behavior was a combination of seasons changing, not sleeping well since DH is working mega hours, and getting over whatever cold is going around. I am so looking forward to tomorrow. I want to just slow down and take it easy. We have no where to go and a whole lot of time to get there. |

Oct. 19, 2006 - From Genghis to Machu Picchu
We are going to an International Fair tomorrow and Big Brother and Big Sister have been making displays about Mongolia and Peru respectively. So today I got to jump back and forth between Mongol hordes and the Incas. It was interesting because along with globehopping, I had to figure out what to do with Little Brother and Sister. They wanted to watch TV, but whenever the TV went on, the Big kids suddenly couldn't work anymore. I kept the kids going and got Mongolia finished because along with the International Fair Big Brother was supposed to give a 5 minute speech about it tonight. That got messed up and he didn't have to, but it is great that his whole project is done.
Tomorrow morning we are going to put Peru together and make a Pan Pipe out of PVC pipe (if I don't succeed in cutting off one of my fingers in the process).
I am so looking forward to the weekend to just sit, relax and watch NASCAR. We are paperclip racing this week and I love watching that. Hopefully my DH won't have to work on Saturday, but I am not holding my breath.
Oh well, that's the way it goes. |

Oct. 14, 2006 - Oh I've been working in the shipyard...
Our family has been active in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts for 6 or 7 years. We build Pine Wood Derby cars every year and have had a blast doing it. If you have seen the movie "Down and Derby" you have an idea what our house is like around Pine Wood Derby time (though I will admit not as bad). After all those years of practice, we have got Derby car building almost down to a science. So when Little Brother brought home the kit for the Rain Gutter Regatta boat I figured we would be fine. It is just like building a Derby car that floats right??? WRONG!!!! It is very different. I found this out after I opened the box and after DH, resident carpenter, engineer, general boat person, had left for 2 days (did I mention the Regatta is tommorow (Sunday) afternoon?). So boat building fell to me. I decided that we didn't have time to paint the boat since paint takes too long to dry. So I took permanent marker and colored the boat the color we wanted it. This of course is after driving a 50+ mile round trip to the Scout store to get the pirate stickers so that the boat could look like the one on the box.
I colored the little balsa wood block and realized that it sucked up the ink very quickly. Would it suck up the water just as quick? So I called our local hardware store and yup, not sealing the boat was going to cause our boat to be a submarine. So I ended up getting some shelac and redoing the "paint job". Tomorrow morning, while I am trying to get ready for church, I am also going to be glueing and finishing the boat. Never a dull moment in the life of a parent |

Oct. 13, 2006 - Winter is coming
Well, I knew that Fall couldn't last forever, but I didn't expect Winter this soon. We are going to be down around freezing tonight and of course DH and Big Brother are camping with the Scouts tonight. I have great respect for the Boy Scouts and support them completely, but I am too big a fan of indoor plumbing and heat to get that involved in the camping trips. That said, I am trying to figure out what to do about Little Brother's request that I go to summer camp with him for a week next summer. I used to think that camping is when the microwave breaks down, but after living on a gentlemen's farm for the last 8 years, heating with wood, raising chickens, turkeys and pigs, and being out in the country, I am much less a city girl than I used to be. Little Brother is really a "momma's boy" and wants me to share this really time with him. I'm hoping that he will decide that Dad is the best for camping, not Mom.
Off to curl up under a bunch of blankets and get ready for the long winter's night. |

Oct. 4, 2006 - Never a dull moment
Well, this summer has been hectic to say the least. We had the typical here, there and everywhere running to do. Big Brother passed his swimming merit badge and became a First Class Boyscout. This may not seem like a big deal, but he has some sensory issues and hates the water. We had him in lessons every week and it wasn't getting much better. Then we had him work with his TKD instructor (who is also a swim instructor) and he finally made it. When he went to camp this year he tested as a swimmer for the first time ever!!!!!
During the summer and early fall, I took 2 graduate courses at University of Phoenix on line. They were intense, but good. DH had gastric bypass surgery in Mass (which went wonderful), and we attended the September race at NHIS. I went on the track walk they had and it was great. If you ever get the chance to do it, you should it was a lot of fun. A homeschooling friend's family and mine went to Heritage NH. They are closing it this year and I wish they wouldn't. It was wonderful. We had a stereographic picture taken of the whole group and just had a wonderful day. Little Brother went to Scout camp with DH for the first time and he can't wait to go back.
Big Brother and Big Sister tested and got their blue stripes in TKD and something really cool happened to me. I won 3rd row tickets to an upcoming Trace Adkins concert! I am so psyched. I love Trace's voice and he isn't difficult to watch either. It isn't till November, and I can't wait. I am a little nervous though. I haven't been to a concert since I was 20 and that was a pretty subdued Billy Joel concert. I don't think that Trace's concert will be subdued at all. Oh well, DH says when in Rome...
As you can see it is always busy at our house, but now that my classes are over I hope to update the blog more often.
Also thanks to all who sent the homeschooling websites. They were great and I got an A in the class. |

Jul. 19, 2006 - I need homeschool family websites ASAP
I am taking an on line college course and I need some help with it. I need to
create a webpage with homeschool family websites links. The sites need to be
from places other than New Hampshire (sorry Granite Staters) and I need at least
2 that are international. I am looking for sites that tell how you homeschool,
teaching tools you use and things like that. I am supposed to find 10 "teacher"
sites that are simular to what I teach and my instuctor said that I could use
homeschool family sites. If you want to be super nice, please include a brief
description (about 50 words) of what your homeschool is like (I need to include
a description with the links). All types of homeschoolers welcomed. I need to
have the site done by next monday so the sooner you can help the better. You all don't know how much I appreciate your help. Thanks so
much. Just put the URLs and the descriptions in the comments.or email to athomemomof4@comcast.net

May. 15, 2006 - It's Raining, It's Pouring the flood waters are rising
Well we are getting ready to build an ark. We are in central New Hampshire and we have flooding everywhere. Thankfully our house is on top of a small hill so we don't get water in the basement, but we have a "stream" in our back yard. That is it was a stream till the beavers got to it. After that it became a small pond. Then came the rains. It is achieving big pond status now. Last week a friend of mine came over to watch our four kids during the day. They went frog hunting down at the little pond. They found frogs and frog's eggs. We were going to take some out of the water and set up an aquarium to watch the frogs hatch and grow. Well, now I don't even know if we can get anywhere near the frogs. Maybe next year. Hopefully things will get better soon, but I don't see it happening. I just hold on to the promise that God will never flood the earth again...though he didn't say anything about flooding New Hampshire.

Apr. 11, 2006 - God sent me some angels
|
Lately things have been less than stellar at our house for
the past month or so (which is part of the reason that I haven't blogged in a
while). My kids I think have Spring fever or have all just decided to be
obnoxious at the same time. I think a lot of it is me. I am tired and
achy with the changes in the weather and my fuse is shorter than normal (and I
am not the most patient person on the planet to begin with). There are days I
get discouraged, and this afternoon was one of them. I bought the Narnia DVD and watched it with the kids. They loved it (and so did I). I had started reading the Chronicles of
Narnia to them, but I am not a good reader of long books so it didnt work I found out that the Focus on the Family
radio broadcast of the Chronicles was on sale ½ price at my local Christian
bookstore so I packed up the kids and headed out. I also had a bunch of shopping to do, so I took all the kids into
the super Walmart in the late afternoon (yes I am an idiot at times). When we went in, the greeter talked to the
little ones for a couple of minutes and then looked at me and said You look
like such a fun family. That made me
feel really good.
As we walked around the store, my kids did a couple of
things like saying things that werent nice and arguing. Some other people
would look at the kids and roll their eyes, until they saw/heard me correct my
children then they would get a smile on their faces. Reminded me that correcting my children is a good thing even when
it is hard.
As we were checking out, Little Sister started talking to
the lady behind us. The lady asked if
they were all mine and I told her yes and the kids ages. She told me that she had 3 kids and would
never try to take them shopping. I told
her that I homeschool and really didnt have much of a choice. She was amazed that I homeschooled all of
them too. Little Sister and Little
Brother became chatterboxes, Big Sister got sulky and grumpy that I wouldnt
get her a different snack than the other kids and Big Brother was just being a
12 year old boy (nough said). I
apologized that the kids were being disruptive. She said that the kids were being very good and it looked like we
had a lot of fun in our family. I left
the store with a smile on my face and encouraged.
God knew that I needed to be encouraged, so He sent some
angels to give me the encouragement I needed and remind me to have fun.
THANKS GOD, I really needed that.

Mar. 7, 2006 - Big Brother's Birthday!
Today my first "baby" turns 12. I can't believe it. It seems like yesterday he was a baby in my arms, now he's up to my shoulder. He is growing into a wonderful young man. I am very proud of him. Puberty isn't really fun, but I know we will survive it (with God's help of course). If anyone is lead to send him a birthday wish, I know he would love it.

Mar. 5, 2006 - Trying a new template
I got tired of the library template that I had so I tried a new one, pink polka dots. Maggieraye left a comment that it was so not me. So I went back and tried a different one. Now we have Remains of the Day. I wanted the one about fall, but that is the same one that Maggieraye has so I decided I needed something different. So Maggieraye, what do you think about this one? Is it me???

Mar. 5, 2006 - My sanity had officially left the building
I have been meaning to blog about this since Monday, but just have never gotten the time. Since the local schools have vacation this week, a lot of our normal activities are cancelled (Tae Kwon Do, Scouts, and swim lessons). I was so happy that we were going to be able to stay home more since moving my gang isn't usually a smooth operation. Monday was going to be one of those stay at home days, till I remembered that DH and I had chiropractor appointments. These appointments are usually pretty easy. DH takes lunch and meets me at the doctor's office. He stays with the kids while I go in and I stay with the kids while he goes in. Sometimes we go to lunch afterwards if the kids don't have TKD. Well, that morning things went a little awry. Little Brother was complaining about an ear ache. He usually doesn't complain so I knew he had another ear infection. I called the doctor's office and asked for the appointment closest to my 11:00 chiropractor appointment. They said they could get him in at 2:40. See we are about 45 minutes from the doctor's office and I didn't want to cart everybody home then drag them out again. So I decided to take the kids to the mall to pass the time. I am pretty sure that was the time when what little sanity I had, left. Lunch went well because DH drove the kids to the mall while I was being adjusted. When I got to the mall, they were all eating quietly. Unfortunately, they could only eat just so long. When we finished lunch, we decided to walk around the mall and look in some of the stores. Big Brother and Little Brother have birthdays coming up and Grandma wants to take each of them out to pick out gifts. We went to the Discovery Store and the Disney Store. These went well until we saw the display in the lobby, for the kids club in the mall, with Dora the Explorer. Dora is Little Sister's absolute favorite character. Unfortunately Big Brother doesn't like Dora at all (I think he has had Dora overload). It only cost $5 per child to join the club and the kids get to get a monthly newsletter and can go to special activities at the mall. So I decided to sign up Big and Little Sister and Little Brother. While I was doing all that, Big Brother (who is 11 going on 30) said he was going to go somewhere else in the mall and before I could stop him, he was gone. I wasn't too worried. Big Brother is just that...Big. He stands 5'5" and weighs 130 pounds. He isn't a follower and is a green belt in TKD. The mall is a safe place and it was the middle of the day. Trying to drag the other 3 to catch him would have been a disaster. I hurried the younger ones through the process then went off to look for Big Brother. I went down a couple of halls and couldn't find him. I don't go to the mall very often, so I don't know all the stores they have. I realize now that if I had found a map of the mall, I would have known exactly where he was. Unfortuately it was getting near time to leave for the doctor and Little Brother was tired and cranky (he did have an ear infection). I finally asked if they paged and they didn't but they would send a security guard to find him. As I described Big Brother to him, he asked if he liked games. Big Brother is a huge video game fan. As soon as I told him that, the man knew where to find Big Brother. Little Brother was whining while I was trying to give the description because he had to use the bathroom bad. So I took off for the bathroom. The bathrooms in the mall are no where near the center of the mall so we had to walk a while to get to one. As we came out of the bathroom, we saw Big Brother with the kind security officer. I was relieved to see him, but also livid that he had wandered off. I asked where he was and was told he was at the video game store that had demos. I told Big Brother that I hoped he liked playing those games because he wouldn't be playing games for the next week. Big Brother didn't understand why he was in trouble. I tried to explain it to him, and finally reached the point of exasperation when Big Brother said, "If you had just followed me, you would have known where I was". I quickly told him that I was the parent and he was the child and that he was to follow me, not the other way around. The rest of the day I had a grumpy Big Brother, a sick Little Brother, and a tired Little Sister. By the end of the day I was tired and sure that my sanity was long gone. After having gone through that whole day, I wonder if I ever had sanity to begin with

Mar. 5, 2006 - Bye Grandma
It is 6:30 AM and I have been up for 2 hours. Little Brother finally caught what the other kids had a couple of days ago. He came in at 4:15 to tell us he had thrown up and could he sleep with us. I told him no, but he could sleep in the living room, then proceeded to get up so DH could sleep, since he is taking the other 3 to church this morning. Little Brother fell back to sleep after about a half hour, but I couldn't. I started thinking (I know that is a scary thing ) about my grandmother. I never knew my mom's mom, so my dad's mom has always been my only grandma. We would go up every year to see her and Grandpa in Maine. I would talk to Grandma, but not like I could talk to Grandpa. Grandma and Grandpa went to live with my aunt and uncle about 8 years ago after realizing that they could no longer care for their themselves and their house. Grandpa died about 3 years ago and Grandma really hasn't been the same since. She and Grandpa had been married 63 years. I can't imagine being with someone that long. Well, now it is Grandma's turn. She is 96 and has reached the end of her life. She went to the hospital last week because her breathing was slow. The doctors said that there was nothing they could do, that it was just what happens as you get old and die. They sent her home since there was nothing they could do and she wants to die at home. She has been doing okay for the past few days, and seems to have gotten nicer since she found out she was dying. We haven't gone to see her. It is 4 hours one way and she can only handle one or maybe two people at a time. That makes things tough with 4 kids. Frankly there is nothing we could do anyway. I am very much a pragmatist when it comes to death. There is nothing I can do for Grandma and the last thing my aunt and uncle need is 6 people showing up at their house. I did call the other day to see how my aunt and uncle were doing. My mom gives me the "Grandma updates" so I didn't need to find out how she is doing. I can't help the dying, but I can help the living. My aunt is doing okay, all things considered and thought it was very kind of me to call. We will go up in the spring for the memorial service and pay our respects then. I wonder sometimes why God does what He does. My grandma is in her late 90's and is nearing the end of her life slowly. She is using her remaining time to talk to her children and settle her affairs. I don't know if she is a Christian, but I do know that she was willing to see a pastor in the hospital "as long as he doesn't preach". I have never heard Grandma talk about God at all so where she stands is a mystery. So why does my grandma get to live such a long life, but someone like Melissa doesn't. I had never heard of Melissa before her death, but from what I have read, she sounds like someone who had everything to live for and many who she encouraged and loved. Why should her life be cut so short? Why should that baby have no mother? I don't understand. It just doesn't make sense. I know that God does everything for a reason and that His ways are not our ways. I will miss my grandma, but her death makes sense. She is very old and her body has reached the end of its endurance. She has had full life and lived to see 4 great-grandchildren. I guess it is the pragmatist in me that wants everything to make sense and that's just not how it is with God. So I say "Bye Grandma" and pray that someday I will see her in heaven. I also realize that all our days are numbered and that only God knows what that number is. So I will hug my kids and thank God that they are healthy and we are all here together. If I live to be a ripe old age, or see my Savior tomorrow, I know that God is in control and His ways are always best.

Feb. 8, 2006 - YEAH STEELERS!!!!
I have been a Steelers fan since the 70's. I have passed that
love of the Black and Gold on to Big Brother. So last Sunday
night, between sneezing and coughing, we sat down with lots of chips,
buffalo wings, and other game snacks and watched the Bus and company
roll over the Seahawks!!!! To
top it all off, Big Brother's favorite player is Jerome Bettis, the
Bus. He had on his 36 jersey and he hooped and hollered like
crazy. Those of you on the east coast who thought that
there was an earthquake, it was just Big Brother jumping up and down in
sheer joy. He is a little disappointed that Bettis is retiring,
but he understands why the the Bus is calling it a career. I am
trying to get Big Brother hooked on Troy Polamalu. He is an
awesome player and outspoken with his Christian faith. STEELERS ALL THE WAY IN 2006!!
