Who Are You Nominating for in the 2008 Homeschool Blog Award?

Posted on Oct. 19, 2008 at 6:57 PM - 4 Comments - Post Comment - Link

Who are you all nominating for in  the 2008 Homeschool Blog Award?

I haven't chosen all the people I am nominating for yet. Below are the catergories that a blog can be nominated for.

2008 Homeschool Blog Award Categories:

1. Best Homeschool Mom Blog
Everyone is the best homeschool mom for their own children. With thousands of homeschool bloggers out there, please know that there will only be one winner online – but EACH OF US are winners in our own homes. If there’s a blogging mom out there that has been a particularly good example to you and you want to let her know… consider her for this nomination! [Her blog does not have to be exclusively about motherhood or homeschooling.]

2. Best Homeschool Dad Blog
We love to hear what dad has to say. Especially if he includes homeschool posts off and on. [Blog doesn’t have to be exclusively about homeschooling.]

3. Best Blog Design
Here’s your chance to nominate your favorite blog design and give your favorite blogger a pat on the back for her talent (or give her web designer some credit!).

4. Best Artistic Content Blog
This blogger has an eye-catching and interesting variety of graphics and photos in posts and in the general design that you enjoy. We want to thank those of you who post pictures and graphics that inspire us!

5. Best Crafts, Plans & Projects Blog
Do you turn to the blogosphere for a steady supply of great craft ideas, lesson plans or projects that you can do with your homeschoolers? Why not share your favorite blogs that provide them with all of us and give that person some recognition?

6. Best Family or Group Blog

Nominate your favorite Homeschool Family blog or your favorite group blog that is either run by Homeschoolers or discusses homeschool issues. [Blog doesn’t have to be exclusively about homeschooling.]

7. Best Encourager
It is time to say thanks to those bloggers out there who lift you up out of the homeschool “blahs” and help you get back on track. The winner of this category doesn’t have to be perfect or always in a good mood… just someone who makes you feel as if someone else cares and has a positive attitude overall.

8. ‘Live-What-You-Believe’ Homeschool Blog
A large percentage of homeschoolers are Christians, but this doesn’t have to mean Christianity only. Other religions or even strictly secular homeschool blogs can be nominated here. The person just has to do a good job marrying their faith (or lack of it) with their posts on homeschooling… uplifting others to walk in faith (or lack of it) and blessing others who adhere to that faith (or lack of it). I for one am thankful that we live in a land that is FREE to worship (or not) any way we see fit… and to homeschool our kids accordingly.

9. Best Unschooling or Eclectic Homeschooling Blog
This blogger should have a great variety of ideas and encouragement for those who homeschool to the beat of their own drum.

10. Best Geographical Blog
In 2005, we had separate categories for International and Canada. I felt that was a bit unfair. This time, we are including a category for ANY geographical place that you find interesting. If you are interested in a blog in Russia, Romania, Canada, Turkey, New Zealand, Texas or Washington D.C. – and your favorite blogger from that area talks a bit about that place in-between homeschool posts, PLEASE let us know! Be sure to let us know when you nominate the Best Geographical Blog that you TELL us WHERE the place is!

11. Best Current Events, Opinions or Politics Blog
We don’t want a strictly political blog that is run by a homeschooler unless quite a few posts have relevant information pertaining to homeschooling. News clips that affect our freedoms as homeschoolers and how homeschooling is portrayed in the media are ideal. We love to hear what other homeschool teachers are thinking and reading and their views on things that affect us all. [This blog does not have to be exclusively about homeschooling, current events, or politics… just a blog that often shares opinions on matters that you enjoy learning from.]

12. Best Homemaking or Recipes Blog
This blog should have content regarding homemaking, housekeeping, tips, ideas for making your life easier, information about raising multiple kids, or recipes that you enjoy trying. [This person should be a homeschooler but the blog doesn’t have to be exclusively about homeschooling, homemaking or recipes.]

13, 14, 15. Best Teen Girl Blog, Teen Guy Blog, Teen Group Blog
Let’s encourage those young bloggers to speak up and be a good example for their peers. I have seen so many wonderful teen blogs out there that deserve recognition. Let us know what some of your favorites are! Teen blogs can be any blogs run by teens who are at least 12 years of age. The winners will have to submit permission slips signed by their parents - see legal page at HSBA for more details. [This blog does not have to be exclusively about homeschooling, but homeschooling should be mentioned often or it should be obvious from the template that the teen is a homeschooler.]

16. Funniest Homeschool Blog
We all need a laugh in-between laundry, lesson plans and loosing our cool. It is nice to get your smile back so you can share it with your students (who can only take “so much gloom” as Ma Walton said so eloquently on Little House on the Prairie). Nominate your favorite crack-pot or crack-up homeschool blog here.

17. Best Cyber-Buddy Blogger
A blogger that you haven’t met, but you think you would enjoy meeting and hanging out with. She/he is a person that you would love to co-op with or live next door to. Who knows, maybe one day we will get together somewhere at one of these bloggy meetings I hear about. I’m so jealous!

18. Best Curriculum or Business Blog
Let us know your favorite homeschool business or curriculum blogs so we can read them, too!

19. Best Variety
This blogger is one that could fit in any of these categories … but they just can’t be pinned down in ONE. This type of blogger is the ADD hyper-focused type… always moving on from one thing to the next… and always keeping you interested in coming back for more!

20. Best Thrifty Homeschooler
Most of us are homeschooling on a shoe-string. Nominate your favorite money-saving blogger so you can share her tips with the blogosphere and bless a bunch of homeschool children in the process! [Blog doesn't have to be exclusively about frugality.]

21. Best SUPER-HOMESCHOOLER
Ever feel like a looser after reading someone else’s lesson plans, seeing their field trip photos, listening to them talk about what they got done today, or seeing pictures of their children’s accomplishments? You were probably feeling the effects of visiting a SUPER-HOMESCHOOLER’s blog. These are the A-list homeschool parents that just BLOW YOU AWAY with their enthusiasm. We all have our good days, but this blogger has us all beat.

22. Best Nitty-Gritty Homeschool Blog
Since we included a category for the Super-Homeschooler… I figured we would add one in for the homeschooler who is brutally honest and open about her mistakes and failures. These are the moms that make you feel better and let you know that it is OK that we aren’t perfect. What would we do without them???

23. Best NEW Homeschool Blog
It is hard making a name for yourself in the blogosphere. A lot of times, you feel as if you are writing and no one is out there. If you have stumbled upon a great new blogger who has a lot of potential and you want to share them with the rest of us… please consider nominating them for this category!

24. *new!* Best Homeschooling Methods Blog
Not everyone is an eclectic or unschooling homeschooler. It is time to give credit to all those other great methods out there. We hope that you will nominate someone in this category that helps you better understand and implement whatever method of homeschooling you follow. No eclectic or unschooling blogs will be considered for this award since they each have their own category already!

Here are the few catergories that I have made nominations for and the blogs that I nominated:

For Best Homeschool Dad Blog, I nominated PureWaterHollow - http://www.homesteadblogger.com/purewaterhollow/

I really enjoy reading his blog. I learn many new things when I read his blog.

For Best Geographical Blog, I nominated Deb's Travel Tales blog. Deb lives in the U.K. She writes about all of her travels in her travel blog - http://nomadickiwis.blogspot.com/

For Best Blog Design, I nominated Gaelin's blog, Exploring Creation. I really like his blog design! http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/Templates/

For Best Artistic Content Blog, I nominated Bethany's Sewing Blog, Stitches and Pins. http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/sewinggirl

For Best Variety, I nominated Sheryl's blog StoneFarm35. She has a wonderful variety on her blog. http://www.homesteadblogger.com/farmgal35/

So far, these are my nominations. If you know anyone or if you would fit in any of these catergories and would like to be nominated, please leave me a comment with for blog address. I will check out your blog and if I like it, I might nominate it.

If you are nominating and don't have anyone nominated in the catergories that I nominated in, maybe you could check out my nominees blogs and nominate them for the awards. I am sure they would appreciate it! To be entered for the final voting, each nominee has to have three people nominate for them.

To nominate someone, go to http://homeschoolblogawards.com/2008/10/2008-homeschool-blog-awards-nominations/#c_form_2

The above link is the form to nominate a blog.

By the way, there is a prize for the blogger with the most votes.

Plasticine? Do You Know What it is? I DO!!

Posted on Apr. 26, 2008 at 4:46 AM - 1 Comments - Post Comment - Link

For my family's homeschooling, we read lots and lots of books. I am finishing reading the book Mary Poppins in  the Park by P.L. Travers. It is a very exciting book! There is always something exciting in every chapter, so it will really hold young children's attention. My brother LOVES being read too. He loved to hear any kind of story!

One of the chapters in the book was called,"Park in the Park". That chapter was talking about Jane making little platicine people and making a tiny park within the park she was in.

I couldn't figure out what plasticine was. My brother kept saying, "What is plasticne?" I didn't know......until we saw a package if it at the Cracker Barrel. It was on sale too, so Mom bought a package of it to play with and make are own little people like Jane did in the story.

Here is the person I made

For those of you who don't know what Plasticine is, it is....well....it's plasticine. It is like a clay, playdough type of thing. It is really fun to play with and it never dries out!

The camera is dead so I couldn't load the picture of my brothers on here.

It is interesting how I discovered something, through a book, that I might have never noticed in my life. You can really learn from books! My family doen't do much of a curriculum, we just read, write, and do math.

Any person would enjoy Mary Poppins in the Park by P.L. Travers. it is so exciting!! My favorite chapter was the first one in the book, "Every Goose a Swan". My little brother and I laughed and laughed and laughed at the charactors in that chapter! It was too funny!

It is so neat to see how much a young child enjoys a book. Some parts of the book I thought he wasn't really listening to, but I found out later when he was telling EVERYBODY about it who would listen. He kept saying,"Oh, It is so funny. You have to read that book."

It gives me such a good feeling to see how much he enjoys being read to.

My Diary of No Shampoo -- Day 6 and 7

Posted on Apr. 26, 2008 at 4:43 AM - 3 Comments - Post Comment - Link

Here is day 6 and 7 of no shampoo. Day 7 was today and day 6 was yesterday.

Day 6 (yesterday, Thursday April 3rd)-

I didn't do anything to my hair. When I got ready for bed, I brushed to distribute the oils to the rest of my hair. I now can feel my hair getting a little oily. I haven't shampooed my hair with egg whites since Monday, I have been rinsing my hair with water when I took my showers earlier in the week.

Day 7 (today, Friday April 4th)-

Today my hair feels as oily as it usually does when I use store shampoo, which is a lot of oil. I shampooed it with whipped egg whites. It feels GREAT!

It will be an entire week tomorrow that I have been without store shampoo! I really feel the difference in my hair! It is great! Usually, with store shampoo, my hair and the top of my hair was practically soaked with oils, it was disgusting. Shampoo would dry my scalp out so bad and then I would start to get oily just an hour or two after I shampooed my hair. Now my hair has moisture in it, egg shampoo does not dry out my hair, and my hair is way less oily. My hair is softer, healthier looking, and I now have a little bit of natural wave back to my hair like I used to have when I was little.

If you have problems with store shampoos or if you are looking for a natural shampoo try this. Give it a week or two to get use to it. I think you will really like the results!

My Diary of No Shampoo -- Day 5 Part 2

Posted on Apr. 26, 2008 at 4:42 AM - 0 Comments - Post Comment - Link

If you all read yesterday's day of my diary of no shampoo, I said I might post a part two of day 5. Here is what I did with my hair last night.

Last night (Day 5) I took a shower and only rinsed my hair and rubbed my finger through my scalp like I would when I would shampoo my hair it. I also conditioned it.

When my hair dried it was really clean!

I will post Day 6 of my diary later. I haven't done anything with my hair today. I will probably shampoo it tonight with egg whites.

My Diary of No Shampoo --- Day 4 and 5

Posted on Apr. 26, 2008 at 4:40 AM - 0 Comments - Post Comment - Link

I am a little late with this post, it should have been posted yesterday.

Day 4 (this was yesterday) - I didn't wash or rinse my hair today. I wanted to see how oily and smelly my hair would be. Normally, my hair stinks if I don't wash it everyday. There wasn't that much oil in my hair at all, it didn't smell either!!! That really excites me that it wasn't all that oily or smelly!

Day 5 (today) - I woke up this morning thinking my hair would be really, really oily and really really stinky, but to my surprise......IT WASN'T!!!!

I didn't wash it today, I will probably wash it before bedtime. The egg shampoo is really working for me!

If I do wash it, I will post about tonight as My Diary of No Shampoo---Day 5 Part 2.

The egg shampoo works for all different types of hair. My sister does it, her hair is sort of dry. For awhile, my sister was using store shampoo and was washing her hair everyday, during this time her hair became very, very oily. I read on the internet that shampoos from the store causes this reaction that me and my sister had because it strips out all the oil from the scalp so the body thinks to make more. Zapping so much out from the scalp makes a body work over-time, so you become so oily that you have to wash everyday.

The egg shampoo cleans your hair and does not make the body react in that way.

Try this shampoo, I think you will like it.

I use two egg whites I whipp it with the mixer until it is really foamy. It reminds me of meringue when it is finished. I (well, actually my mom) rub it onto my scalp until all of the shampoo in the bowl is used. Then, I rinse it out when I take a shower.

I still use store conditioner, I hope to find something to replace that.

*It is best to rinse the egg shampoo with warm or cool water, not hot. Sometimes, when the egg shampoo is rinsed with really hot water it it will stay in the hair. I guess it kind of cooks it.

Read my other days in my diary.

My Diary of No Shampoo - Day 3

Posted on Apr. 26, 2008 at 4:35 AM - 0 Comments - Post Comment - Link

I copied and pasted this from my homemstead blog. It is my diary of no shampoo!

This is the third day of my no shampoo diary.

Today I shampooed my hair in whipped egg whites. My hair looks way better than it did with store shampoo and feels a whole lot better too!

I have been rubbing some of the whites on my face and it clearing all of my blackheads and pimples from my face.

My No Shampoo Diary - Day 1 and 2

Posted on Apr. 26, 2008 at 4:33 AM - 0 Comments - Post Comment - Link

I copied and pasted this from my other blog. This is my diary with no shampoo!

I have quit using store shampoo, instead I wash my hair in whipped egg whites. It works great!!! This is my second day for my no poo do. I will be sharing the diary of my experience with no shampoo.

First I need to tell you a little about my hair. This is how my hair is while using store shampoo.- I have long fine hair and I have alot of it. My hair, face, neck, and back are oily, very oily. The rest of my body is dry, hands, legs, arms...... I shampoo my hair almost every day. My hair is only clean for a few hours after my shower, by bedtime my hair smells...it really stinks......really oily by this time too.

Day 1 (yesterday) -  I shampood my hair in whipped egg whites, conditioned the ends of my hair (with store bought conditioner ), and finished my shower. My hair was very easy to comb and when it dried it looked very nice!

Day 2 (today) - When I woke up my hair felt a little oily in the back of my head, but my hair was not as oily as it usually is when I use store shampoo.

Today when I took my shower I didn't shampoo my hair with anything. I just rinsed my hair and conditioned  the ends of my hair.

I thought my hair would be kind of oily since I just rinsed my hair instead of shampooing, but it is not at all! It is very clean! No smell of oily hair like I usually have when using store shampoo.

This is the first two days of my experiece, I will share more tomorrow.

Goat Accident~WARNING! GRUSOME PICTURES!

Posted on Jan. 3, 2008 at 10:56 PM - 11 Comments - Post Comment - Link

One of our does had an accident yesterday. Her horn got pulled off. She was bleeding a lot! My sister put some corn starch on it to stop the bleeding but that didn't work all that well so she put some Blood-Stop on it. She is not bleeding now. she is all better.

She only had one horn because when she was a baby we de-budded her horns, burned them, but on of the horns grew. We called her uni-horn because she only had one. What I found really strange was that when her horn got pulled off she had a new horn growing underneath the old one. I have never heard of this happening with goats.

Here are the pictures- they are a little bloody!

They are a little gross!

I have listed many new items at my store, homesteaderbelle.blogspot.com. I have many purses for sale. Come and visit if you like! Spread the word about my store!

Today's Happenings

Posted on Dec. 5, 2007 at 1:26 PM - 6 Comments - Post Comment - Link

Today we got snowed some!!! Not enough to stick. Oh, well.

Today Lillie is going to make some Chili and she is going to make the cookie dough for Paint brush Cookies!

I love to paint the cookies. We paint them with egg yolks and food coloring, then we bake them. They taste very good!

Making those cookies is our Christmas tradition, I guess. We do it every year. After we make some I will post picture.

The goats are getting very big. They should have there babies in a month or two. I can't wait to have the goat's milk again. I do not like drinking milk from the store.

I hope you all have a very good day!

                               God Bless,

Brush Pile Fence Progress and Pictures!

Posted on Nov. 19, 2007 at 8:50 PM - 4 Comments - Post Comment - Link

Here on our homestead, my family and I have been working on a brush pile fence.

This is what we saw before we started the brush pile fence.

We saw an empty field. This is what it looks like so far.

My family and I hope to get it five feet high and as long as our very long drive-way.

This will all grow up wityh vines, briars, and hopefully some trees will grow up out of the fence. We are doing this for the wildlife, a wind break, and for more privacy, as this is our property line.

We have already had some birds get in there because we put some seed in the brush.

                            God Bless,

                             Belle
