I must admit I hesitate to share much in this area. I don’t think I have ever had the perfect Home School room BUT I did see a great home school room once at a Home School Support Group meeting.
We were getting together for our monthly meeting and it just happened to be in Bonnie’s house. There is usually a question of the month for each of us to share our thoughts on and then there is a show and tell time. This month, Bonnie showed us their Home School room in their new house.
The thing I loved the most about her Home School room was the table. She and her husband had done some thinking about what kind of table they wanted. They went to IKEA and bought 4 rectangular desks (one for her and one for each of her three children) that they put in a big rectangle in their Home School room. Each desk has a drawer for pencils and pens, plus two shelves for books. What a great idea!
THEN she proceeded to tell us that it is almost always clear of clutter. So she has a 4 x 8 foot table that is able to be worked on at any time. Her boys love to draw and can be found often in their Home School room at their part of the table, drawing.
What an awesome scrapbooking table it would make…. Or a table to cut patterns out on, or to build lego on, or ___________ (you name it!).
Of course you also need some bookshelves for Home School curriculum or supplies. A window ledge for 3 dimensional projects is a good idea! A wall for a timeline and educational posters is fun to use. AND, of course, one more shelf for paper and puzzles. The best way to avoid clutter is to have a place for everything… (or so I have heard!).
Bonnie even uses her closet (not shown) for some extra storage of big items (and other household items that are used seldom).
So, does she have the perfect room? I don’t know. I did like the idea of an empty table top enough to blog about it. She really works at releasing clutter out of her home and life, which is a good thing to think about and do.
I wasn’t ready to go and buy new desks, but I did come home and buy 2 three shelf bookcases for each side of our Home School table – which helped tremendously with decluttering the table top AND I have really worked at keeping the table clear since that time.
It certainly is an ongoing project. Need to work on it again this summer.
What makes the perfect Home School Room for your family? Only you know what you need. Take the summer to make the perfect Home School room for your family.
*By the way, I know some families don’t use Home School rooms – we home school all over our house, too. However, it is nice to have a place to keep our Home School supplies together.
