Our Idaho Family
Jun. 8, 2008 - How does your garden grow?

Well, we've finally got all the plants that we started inside planted in the garden. Unfortunately, we lost two to the chickens, when they were out eating in the yard. And, there are a couple that are questionable. We also got green beans planted. There's still more, but we're getting close. And,...

THINGS ARE GROWING! I can see little leaves popping up! I am so excited!!!

We have planted: radishes (first thing to come up), carrots, green onions, beets, cilantro, lettuce, snow peas, green beans, bell peppers, hot peppers, tomatoes, pumpkin (one plant is barely hanging on! I hope it makes it), watermelon, and a wee little cantelope that may or may not make it (chicken damage).

We still need to plant zuchini, squash, cucumbers, more pumpkin, and corn. I think that's it. There might be something else.

I know these things need to get in the ground soon, but we are working on it as quickly as we can. And, it seems that all it has been doing as of late is RAIN. Which, is causing what's planted to grow, but is making it quite difficult to get all things in the ground.

I have to admit, I really am quite proud of myself! It's a sad life I'm living these days. The pure joy I get out of going out there and finding a leaf (that isn't a weed) popping out of the ground. Every morning it is pretty much one of the first things I do. I hope these things really do actually fully grow and that we get to enjoy them. I am enjoying being with my hubby. We haven't been able to convince the girls that it's real fun to hang with mom and dad in the dirt. But, they have their moments. And, soon they'll have plenty of weeds to keep them more than enough busy. Not to mention all the rock that we have inbetween the rows that still needs to get taken out.

Oh, how exciting! I have never had the gardening bug bite me before (read:I have a brown thumb) but tonight we picked some of the new baby lettuce out of the middle whiskey barrel and ate it on a late-night BLT. Suddenly I feel so accomplished I hardly know what to do with myself! I actually grew that lettuce! So I think the bug may be biting just a wee, tiny bit and I will actually like gardening here after a bit!

Your garden sounds huge and amazing and big and I bow in awe of you and your family. I can see blue ribbons headed your way at the fair this fall. Way to go!
