Christian History Lesson 1 part 1&2 Response

This post is in response of PrincipledMom's lessons on her blog. I will admit right now that I am not going to go into the depth that others might, and for good reason. My baby's due date is today and we are waiting on pins and needles for this little guy to make his appearance. Needless-to-say, I am very distracted right now. (Your prayers for us would be greatly appreciated; we are so anxious to meet our newest child.)

The Christian Idea of Man

Simply, we are created in His image - Genesis 1:26&27. God stated "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness..." God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them.

An image is a representation - we are representations of God. We hold His qualities and characteristics. We hold His likeness. Not one of us holds all of God, but we all hold some measure of attributes of God. I have a sister who is incredibly nice and patient. She works in the ER here in NM. The patients adore her. I believe she reflects and aspect of God during her work - one of loving people, even in unlovable situations. Not everyone has this, yet we all have some attribute.

God is infinite! In the myriad of characteristics we could hold, God has given each of us an individual and unique representation of Him. This means that each of us is an unique individual. I love this! We are created with independent value. Each of us holds aspects of God's character within us that He has picked out. We are valuable to Him; we hold intrinsic individual - independent - value.

Is this profound enough? We are individual. We have intrinsic value.

This leads perfectly into ...

The Purpose of Government

Government is to protect that individual with independent value in his/her Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness. These rights derive from God and individuals give the government the responsibility to keep them. Government is the servant of the individual! The people united, though diverse and unique, give the government authority to protect our God - given rights.

These rights are God given. Life is in His hands. John 1:4 "In Him was life; and the life was the light of men." God is the creator of life, we do not have that power. I know this little guy kicking inside me is not the doing of my husband and I (though, I know that God uses a husband and wife to bring children). God decides when that child will come and what that child will be and so on.

I am going to stop here for now. This study really does have me thinking about how our ideas of Man and Government reflect our nation. I am really pondering what is being said of our nation given our choices for the next president. Are we a nation governed by the people or are we a nation of people wanting to be governed?

Pilgrim Institute

I have had the privilege of training under Master Teacher, Ruth Smith and her daughter, Jeanette Whittaker. The week was amazing and so much was taught that my weekend was spent just organizing my mind as where to begin. I thought that I would just like to take a moment and thank Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Whittaker for their time and effort and patience in instructing and enlightening and forming new manners and practices in us as we educate our students and children.

Mrs. Smith impressed me greatly when I first met her two years ago. Her time here this week in no way diminished that impression. She is a reasonable and reasoned person. She reasons from the Scripture to convey the Principles that guide America's Christian History. This is so inspiring to listen to. Her articulate manners and convictions effortlessly convey the mystery of Biblical Principle Approach. During the week, I felt the scales fall away as the truths of God's Word lite the path to understanding.

Part of the classes were taught by Mrs. Whittaker. What a blessing she must have in her parents, who learned and taught this philosophy of government and education to her and her sisters. Mrs. Whittaker has internalized it so well that her mind thinks in these terms. I am having to work out my public education sludge to recalibrate my intellect to use its God-given reasoning skills. I enjoyed learning from Mrs. Whittaker. Her manner is light and words quick. She did some hands on work using Aesop's Fables. She was able to get a group of adults excited about a child's story. Our discussion went well beyond the length of the story. We delved so deep into the character of the animals and the plot that our minds literally began seeing this Lion and Mouse not as animals in some story, but as examples of cause and effect of actions. The actions were not limited to one instance, but included thought, emotion, decisions, consequences, and character. If a fable not seven paragraphs long could bring out such a beautiful demonstration of the Internal - Causative to External - Effect, how much more a literary classic.

This year our class not only reviewed the Rudiments course, but we also began our own development of a curriculum in a subject. Some chose Literature, Science, Language (as in a foreign language), Worldviews, and Bible. We also had attendees that taught grade-school to high school and adults. I chose, with the help of Mrs. Smith, to tackle Literature for my high school daughter. YIKES! This isn't my strong area, I much rather have delved into Math or Physics. However, developing a Literature curriculum has opened my eyes to the treasure this subject is. I am enjoying stretching and expanding my learning in ways I didn't think possible.

Please take the time to visit the Pilgrim Institute and all they offer. I noticed online classes for high school and adults. A wonderful two day conference is coming up in Oklahoma in April. I encourage you to attend, you will not be disappointed!!!

Thank you both again for coming and sharing and teaching and laughing with us!!!!

Webster's 1828

I am currently 4-Ring Literature. Among the many enlightening ideas I have found concerning this basic of courses, one in particular stands out.

The first thing to do when 4-Ring is to define the subject using Webster's 1828. And then to define key words. One of my key words was "composition." Here is the definition as it relates to Literature:

2. In literature, the act of inventing or combining ideas, clothing them with words, arranging them in order, and in general, committing them to paper, or otherwise writing them. Hence,
3. A written or printed work; a writing, pamphlet or book.

Is that not beautiful and life-giving? The act of inventing ideas and clothing them with words, oh I get lost in the imagery of it!

For fun, I thought I would look at the Merriam-Webster dictionary online for their definition. Here it is as it relates to Literature:

1 a: the act or process of composing; specifically : arrangement into specific proportion or relation and especially into artistic form
5: an intellectual creation: as a: a piece of writing; especially : a school exercise in the form of a brief essay

Not quite as moving as the original. Another aspect of defining this word that I found very telling of the evolution of our language was the thoroughness of the 1828 definition. There were 15 different definitions for "composition." The Merriam-Webster had a mere seven. Let me add that the latter defined the word fine, however much was lost in the completeness and beauty of our fine language. Language is a wonderful gift of our Lord and should be celebrated as such, not overlooked.

Noah Webster is a fine man and worthy of rememberance and studying. His work should be among every literary home.

Has anyone any other insights into the excellence of Webster's 1828 over contemporary dictionaries? I'd love to share your stories.

4 R'ing Revealed

The four R’s used in the Biblical Principle Approach are Researching, Reasoning, Relating, and Recording. These tools are used in each subject, and I am finding out in all areas of interest from food to discipline to news.

I call these tools because they are to be used in the study of a subject. You are not bound by them nor do they dictate your teaching. These tools are used to free you into teaching upon the Spirits leading. This is not easy. Becoming a “living textbook” will not happen over night or over the next year. I have been discouraged that it hasn’t happened over the last four years. Faithfulness brings the fruit of our unseen work in years to come.

  1. Researching

This involved the most legwork, so to speak. First define the subject thoroughly. Allow the Holy Spirit to lead and guide while seeking definitions. Flush out exactly what this subject means to you and to God. Summarize leading ideas; those statements that bridge the gap from theoretical to practical. These may be added to later or detracted from when it comes time to prepare the lessons. Use a good concordance to search in God’s Word His design for that subject, as well as His design for your home with regard to that subject. Lastly, with all this gathered together, glean the Biblical Principles for the Subject. These are the seeds of the subject. These should be simply stated and yet encompassing of the subject. (ie. God created the Heavens and the Earth. – simple principle for science)

  1. Reasoning

This is actually done in the researching when you are identifying the Biblical Principles. Reasoning is where the leading ideas – the bridges – are used to lead the student to the principle from the subject. You then reason from the Biblical Principle of the subject and guide your student into a deeper understanding the subject.

  1. Relating

This is done orally, through written work, in art, in drama, song or dance, any medium that fits you and your family. I had to back off on requiring large amounts of writing from Actress, so we went to more oral discussion of things.

  1. Recording

This is simply the written record of the study – the Notebook. Again this can be an art journal or a video journal. This is the record of what you learned and taught as well as what your student learned. This is individual. Each of us has our own manner of preserving our knowledge.

This is not easy to implement and possibly might be best to start small. Pick one subject to 4 - R. Just do that for a semester or a year. Then move on to other subjects. Using this method will restore to America a reasoned people. The reward is well worth the time and effort.

What Is Shepherd's Fold?

Our School's Motto is: Fidelis, Virtus, Continentia

Our School's Motto means: Faith, Virtue, Self-Control

We chose Shepherd's Fold as the name of our school to reflect Jesus, our Shepherd, leading and directing our learning and our lives. The Lord created us to be multi-dimensional. Each part of us needs His guidance. As He cares, directs, and protects for every aspect of our lives, then we, with His help, care for, direct, and protect our children.

African Gospel Art has several pieces. This one about the Good Shepherd really connected with me. The kind owner of the site is allowing me to use it in my blog. Please visit the art work; it really is delightful.
