Just Call Me Jamin!

We have homeschooled our children from the start and we love every minute of it! This is my place to share my thoughts on homeschooling, my kids and living for the Lord. All the while being a little outside the box!!

Making Lemonade!

June7

Well, it seems my online life has been full of lemons over the last few weeks.  But, as I have come to expect with God, He has taken the lemons and is making some wonderful lemonade! So here is what is going on with me…

I am making progress at getting my blog back up and running.  It’s been a challenge, but the work I am doing is something I have wanted to do for a looong time and now it’s getting done.  I am praying that in the next few weeks I will have everything back up and running on my blog and will be able to post again on a regular basis.  I will let you all know the minute that happens!

Here is the wonderful news though! I have a new online job!!!!  I am now posting on the Trigger Memory Systems Facebook and Twitter.  It is a blast! So if you want to get great freebies, read my thoughts on creative homeschooling and chit-chat back and forth…this is your chance!  Just search for Trigger Memory Systems on Facebook or Twitter and click LIKE.

I hope to see you there!

I got the official word today from Eric at HSB that the organizational changes I made to my blog using HTML coding will not be returning.  I thought that was going to be the answer, but I was still hoping I was wrong.  :^(  I can’t tell you how much I appreciate Eric and the time he took to understand the question I was asking.  I know I made it tricky since I had gone “outside the box” as usual and used my own HTML coding.

To try to cheer myself up I bought a new domain name!

http://www.justcallmejamin.com

I have the new address set to transfer here when someone types it in now.  So the good news is when you want to tell your friends how to get to my blog you can tell them to go to justcallmejamin.com! :^)

Prayers for my peace of mind as I process all this would be appreciated!

MY SUBSCRIBERS ARE AMAZING AT PRAYING!

I sent out an email over the weekend to let my subscribers know about the problems I have been having since the HSB updates. I got hundreds of responses that they were all praying! Then today I finally had time to click around the templates and get creative AND I found a temporary fix for my blog! I found a template that allows me to set up something called “PAGES” in those “PAGES” I was able to post a link to my old manual categories that I had set up. So if you visit my blog you will now find:

They are not as nice and fancy as they were before AND you will have to click two places to get to them. But they are accessible again! YAY!!!!

It’s been an exhausting weekend, but I am heading to bed feeling a little less sad than I have been for the last week. I am still not sure what I am doing in the future regarding my blog. There is MUCH work to be done before all is back to “normal” for my blog. The end of the school year is a super busy time for us and I just don’t have time to really deal with all this. But, at least I can find things now when I need too. I am thinking about setting up another blog that mirrors this one but is owned by me. Then I will have a copy that can’t be changed unless I decide to do it. Of course I have NO CLUE how to do any of that! LOL So only time will tell.

ALSO I am testing to see if Feedburner will now send out my posts.

I am hoping my subscribers are reading this via email!

Thanks for all those prayers subscribers!

The Bionic Blog!

May16

Breathing in, breathing out…..Trying not to FREAK!!!!

Okay, in case you don’t know homeschoolblogger.com is in the process of making some BIG changes! I signed on today to find that ALL my organizational efforts I have put in over nearly 5 years are GONE. I keep thinking of the Six Million Dollar Man…

Gentlemen, we can rebuild him. We have the technology. We have the capability to build the world’s first bionic man. Steve Austin will be that man. Better than he was before. Better, stronger, faster.

But, can I rebuild my blog? I don’t know. I do know that I probably put too many of my organizational eggs in my homeschoolblogger basket. I have used my blog to organize everything! From meal planning to notes to someday scrapbook, I had it all in one place. And now I can’t find any of it! For now I am just going to take a break and have a good cry. I need to let them finish whatever it is that they need to do. I can’t assess how much damage has been done until it’s done.

It’s been a rough day! I am trying to keep it all in perspective. I just keep thinking…Is it God or the devil that is saying it’s time to stop blogging? I need to spend time in prayer about whatever my next step is.

I will let you know…eventually….

The Baby IS the Lesson

December8

I was cleaning up my blog this weekend and I came across this post I had written back in May that I had never posted.  So here it is 7 months later!  LOL

One of my subscribers sent me a link to an article called The Baby IS the Lesson in response to my post on Deschooling.  She thought is would be good to pass along to the Mom who had written me.  After reading th article I couldn’t agree more!  What a great article.

Reading this made me reminisce a bit about back when we had little babies in our homeschool.  From the start of homeschooling I decided that home came first in homeschooling for a reason.  We are a family first and a school second.  So for the most part I tried not to stress out about school when I had little babies in the house.  HOWEVER, there were more than a few times that I blew it!

Here is one of my favorites. When  was pregnant with #3 and my oldest was 9.  It was a really easy pregnancy except for one thing.  From 1:00 to 3:00 every afternoon I HAD to sleep!  LOL  No matter how I tried to avoid it 1:00 would come and I would just pass out!  So one day I get a phone call from my sons Bible Study teacher.  He says that he knows this might sound weird but he is calling to tell me I need to buy a new box to store our math manipulatives in.  I am confused?  What is he talking about??  He goes on to tell me that he asked my son how school was going and my son informed him that everything was fine except for math.  When he asked him why he replied "Well, I can’t get the lid off the manipulatives and by time I do Math everyday my Mom is asleep."  ROFL!!!!

Luckily his teacher had himself been homeschooled!  So he knew what was going on.  We had a good laugh about it and I thanked him for the call.  When I asked my son why he had never told me this he replied "Well, you never asked I only think about it when your asleep. I’m not about to wake you up! You would yell at me."

We have many the funny stories from when we had babies in the house and MOST of them involve me falling asleep!  LOL  But the point is my kids learned that the family came before school.  They have still learned what they need to know, but they have also learned compassion and patience along the way.  Those things are a lot harder to teach than Math!

While I am on the topic of babies here are the lyrics to a song we have one tape that we all loved when my youngest was a baby.

His Majesty The Baby
By: Norman Foote

It’s 5 o’clock the afternoon is gone.
And all is quiet, all the shades are drawn…
We’re walking on tiptoes. cause everybody knows,
He’s not to be disturbed,
NOT a single word.
So hush, be quiet,
Won’t you please be quiet.
We live at his command and kiss the gentle hand
Of his majesty, the baby.

Look, he knows me!
See the smile he shows me.
You may announce him now, let everybody bow,
To his majesty, the baby.

The ladies stand in waiting,
"Here comes the king, make way!"
They all stand there debating,
"What will his highness say?"

Look, he’s waking.
Hear the sounds he’s making?
You may announce him now.
Everybody bow,
To his majesty, the baby.
We live at his command and kiss the gentle hand of his majesty, the baby.

The baby…

Marriage – Oct. 20, 2008

October20

My husband and I attended a wedding Saturday night for one of his co-workers.  It was kind of an unusual experience for me because I had not had the opportunity to meet anyone at the wedding including the bride or groom!  So I found myself to be much less emotionally invested than I usually am at a wedding.  This gave me a great chance to sit back, be an outside observer, and think about marriage.

Weddings are great fun!  But, marriage is what happens when the wedding is over.  And marriage, while it can be fun, can also be hard!  Here is some of what I thought about while I was observing all the goings one of the wedding Saturday night…

When I was 8 years old I was the flower girl at my cousins wedding.  That was really the first real thought I had ever given to weddings or marriage.  I had been in wedding 3 years earlier.  But at five it didn’t have much meaning to me.  At 8 years old the wedding was like a dream!  The bride was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen and the whole thing seemed like a fairy tale.  The church seemed like a castle to me and the whole thing lives on in my mind as a Cinderella story.  At the reception there was dancing and food everything seemed like magic.  I assumed marriage would be the same.

The next wedding that stands out in my mind would be my sisters.  She was married when I was 16, and while it was equally beautiful, I was now old enough to see the hiccups that happen in the actual wedding.  Of course, it was not hard to see said hiccups when the best man fainted not once, BUT TWICE during the ceremony! A member of the church who was an ambulance attendant happened to be at the wedding and the second time came forward to give medical attention to the best man.  This wedding was probably the first time I thought about the fact that in weddings and marriage things DO NOT always work out the way we plan them.

Fast forward several years with me to my husbands youngest brothers wedding.  By this point my husband and I had been married nearly 10 years and were parents to our first and only child at the time.  (He was 3.)  At this wedding I found myself thinking about what marriage is really about.  Forget about the Cinderella factor, by this time I now knew that marriage can be a lot of work!  What would this couple experience in their journey together?  I thought about our own journey with infertility and the loss of our first child.  I wondered if these types of problems would make their relationship grow and strengthen or fall apart? I thought about how hard it must be for my mom to attend weddings now that she was a widow after more then 30 years of marriage to my father. I prayed for them because I knew that although marriage could be wonderful, if could also be difficult.  Like a beautiful rose it would not be without it’s thorns.

On our 12th wedding anniversary my husbands best friend was married to his lovely bride.  This was a very special time in our marriage because after 12 years we had finally been able to have our second child!  We attended the wedding with our 6 year old and our 6 week old! This was the first time most of our family met our new baby girl and we had our own reasons to celebrate that night!  I remember thinking that this was probably the happiest I had ever been in my life.  At this wedding I thought about what it meant to be partners.  I thought about how important this person would be as she went through pregnancy and childbirth.  How they would plan together and hope for the next generation in a way they had never even understood before. I thought about how much I needed my husband! I realized that even though weddings are romantic and wonderful I was SO blessed to have the security and comfort of 12 years of history with my beloved.  How I hoped and prayed for the same blessings for our friends.

When we had been married 15 years we renewed our vows at our own second wedding.  This is a day I treasure!  After 15 years of marriage we knew what true love was.  I thought so much that day about how much more this renewal of our vows meant to me than even our first wedding did!  Not because our first wedding wasn’t real and wonderful, but because on the day we were married it was about hope and dreams.  Fifteen years later our renewal was about commitment, devotion and true love.  We knew what we had gotten ourselves into at this point and we were celebrating that we were in it together!.  I cried as we renewed our vows, which may seem weird since I did not cry when we said our vows the first time.  My mother-in-law asked me about this later when I showed her the video and I remember telling her “The first time I had no idea what those vows meant, this time I knew all too well what they were all about and that was overwhelming.”  As we renewed our vows after 15 years of marriage our 9 year old was best man, our 3 year old was flower girl and our 4 month old was my bouquet!  My mom was the entire audience!  LOL Yep, after 15 years of “trying” our family was complete!  Wow!  I still get butterflies!

So as we attended this most recent wedding we are coming upon our 20th wedding anniversary next April.  I am sure that is what got me in this retrospective mood.  LOL  So what did I think about as I witnessed 2 complete strangers promise to share their lives with each other?  I thought about what it means to hold a hand that is so familiar that you know it as well as your own.  I thought about the small creases that have oddly appeared around my husbands eyes that make him all the more handsome to me.  I thought about the joy it brings to see the man you love brush your daughters hair and to know that sharing his love with this “other woman” is the most precious gift he can give me.  I thought about my husband as dad to our boys and how the decision I made the day I married him will impact their lives forever.  I thought about how grateful I am that the man I married almost 20 years ago still makes me laugh every day!  I thought about how this sweet couple would feel some day as the attended the funerals of their parents.  I thought about how 20 years ago my mother-in-law was pretty much a complete stranger to me and now she is our beloved grammy who I miss more than words can ever express.  I thought about the times when money would be short and tempers even shorter.  I thought about job losses and job changes. I thought about moves to new States that made saying goodbye to everything familiar an adventure as you do it together! I thought about the laughter they would hopefully share and how that would get them through the tough times. I thought about how 20 years passes in a flash and I wondered if this beautiful red headed bride would be wearing “sensible shoes” (like me) to a wedding 20 years from now!  LOL

Yes, I realized this weekend that my perspective on weddings and marriage has changed drastically over the years.  I think about my two precious uncles that passed away in the last few months and left their wives as widows after more than 60 years of marriage!  I realize that even after 20 years we are hopefully only beginners at this marriage journey. We still have so much road to travel together!  PTL!

Hehehe – Sept. 8, 2008

September8

Homeschooling is SO much fun!  LOL  Friday the mailman brought us 2 boxes with new curriculum for my FRESHMAN.  Getting new curriculum is always SO exciting at our house!  I started opening the one that contained my sons Algebra 1 for the year.  The kids were all excited and wanted to open the other one.  So I told them go ahead, without thinking.  They said to me “What is it?”  and I replied “It’s Science.”  Then the screams started!  LOL

I completely wasn’t thinking about the fact that I ordered specimens to dissects this year for Biology!

:^)
Yep, there staring  up out of the box was a dead frog, crawdad, earthworm and a HUGE FISH! What a hoot!  The kids took of running and I got at least an hour of peace and quiet!  LOL  I may have to carry dead specimans around more often!

I guess it was quite a shock to open a box expecting a book and finding dead things!  LOL  One thing is for sure…It is NEVER dull and boring around here!

Happy Homeschooling,

Jamin

Great News for Back to School – Sept. 2, 2008

September2

Today is our first day back to school for the new school year.  I got some great news about the new school year this weekend when I bought my new 2009 calendar!

2009 has TWO APRILS!!!!
I can’t think of anything I could want more as a homeschooling mom!  LOL

The kids are thrilled because this means we get to have 2 April Fools Days.  (Which is basically their favorite holiday!)  Who knew you could buy 30 whole extra days in a year for just $2.00!

ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course my husband had to be the killjoy and point out that with 2 Aprils there will also be 2 April 15ths!  LOL

Just thought I would start the new school year off with a little humor.  I am humbled to realize that my oldest is a Freshman this year! WOW!  It seems like only yesterday we were doing preschool sprawled out on he living room floor.  What a blessing to have traveled this homeschooling road with him!

I know this year there will be times I feel stretched a little thin.

This year I have:

One is High School
One in Grade School
One in Preschool

What a blessed Mama I am! God is good!  And I am sure grateful for that extra April! LOL

Key Lime Pie

August27

My rent-a-kid makes the most wonderful key lime pie!  So of course we made sure he brought the recipe along when he came to visit!

Here are my two littles squeezing the key limes.
This kept them occupied for awhile.  It takes A LOT of key limes to get enough juice for a pie!

My rent-a-kid working on grating the rind.

Here is a shot of the delicious end result!
Yummy!!!!

Okay. with my rent-a-kids permission here is the recipe…

:^)

2 teaspoons grated lime peel, green portion only

Whipping Cream Garnish (optional)
1/2 cup whipping cream
2 teaspoons granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon vanilla

INSTRUCTIONS

A New Chore

July2

I have been trying to come up with a good chore for my 4 year old for awhile.  All the kids help with things like cleaning their rooms, picking up, vacuuming and laundry.  But my older 2 also have some set chores they are responsible for every day.  (My 13 year old keeps the kitchen clean, which is a BIG job.  My 7 year old sets the table, cleans off the dishes after each meal and wipes down the table.)  These are chores they are responsible for without being asked. They need to be done before they can play and do other things.  My 4 year old has been wanting his own chore, but no matter what I would think of it was just too hard for him.  Then daddy picked up this little broom and dustpan at the 99 Cent store.  This he can do!

He is so proud to be contributing!  It is a big help too.  Since both of the little ones like to cut paper there seems to be no end to the scraps that need to be cleaned up.  He doesn’t get every single speck of dust, but it is sure better than me doing it all!

Cookie Update!

June25

Apparently I am the only person on earth that did not know cookies could be made from a cake mix!

Here are a few of the variations of this recipe I received after I posted about our cake mix cookies yesterday.

From my Mom:
I have used this recipe for years.  Add choc. chips to a yellow cake mix for Choc. Chip Cookies.  Yummy!

From my sil:
It has been several years since I made cake mix cookies, but I use to do the lemon ones and dust with powder sugar. Now I’m getting hungry.

From a reader:
I have used this recipe in many a pinch when we had unexpected drop in company. My recipe is a little different than yours.  But the mix ins open up a whole ‘nother realm of possibilities.  It’s really yummy to use spice cake with raisins and nuts.  We’ve also done white or yellow cake mix with a dash of extract (orange, lemon and almond are especially yummy!).

1 package of cake mix (any flavor)
1 large egg
1/4 cup of oil
1/4 cup of water
1 cup of chopped nuts, raisins, oatmeal, coconut, chocolate chips, M&M’S® etc. (anything you like in cookies)

And from an inventive reader:

hi, jamin’–we are going to make these tomorrow with chocolate fudge cake mix.  i’ll toss in some chocolate chips and substitute applesauce for the oil.  (i hope it works like that!)  these will go great with the ziploc bag ice cream recipe we love.

So there you have it!

All kinds of cookies all from a cake mix!

Thanks so much to everyone that shared their variation of the recipe with me!

Cake Mix Cookies

June24
Since I really don’t like to bake I am always looking for simple baking ideas.  I don’t even know how I got to this blog, but there was a recipe for making cookies using a cake mix.  It only had 3 ingredients cake mix, 2 eggs and 1/3 cup oil.  This is a recipe I can handle!  LOL  So my littles and I made strawberry cookies.

This was SUPER simple and made big soft cookies.  The kids really liked them and the flavor possibilities are endless. (I am thinking chocolate fudge cookies sound great next time!) Other than mixing up the ingredients all you do is bake them for 10 to 12 minutes at 375 degrees.  We ended up with 16 cookies.

One thing we can always count on….
If we make cookies there will be a certain teenager who shows up to eat them! LOL

Snow Album

June19

This is completely off the topic of homeschooling…But, it’s summer so I figure it can be a what I am doing on my summer vacation post!  LOL

I LOVE to scrapbook!  However, in the last 18 months since our lives turned topsy turvy I have had very little time to scrapbook.  So when the new church we have been going to had a scrapbook night.  I HAD to go! I am painfully behind on my chronological scrapbooks.  It seems that when everything went crazy the end of 2006 I just stopped scrapbooking.  So Intead of trying to get caught up I decided I wanted to try and do a whole album in one night!  LOL Okay, it is not a BIG album.  It is just a 12 page one and I decided to make the topic the snow we had last March.

I had bought this little acrylic album at the last scrapbooking convention I had gone to in Las Vegas.  It is very simple.  Just 6 pieces of acrylic help together with 3 metal rings.  Here is where the challenge comes in…It’s see through!  So whatever you do on one side you can see on the other.  This made for a interesting time putting it together. You have to constantly think about where you are placing adhesive and what the other side is looking like!   I really like how it came out though.  Here are the pics.

Cover:
To make things simple I chose one main paper and a theme of blue, white and black.  The tag on the front is something  picked up in a clearance bin for 50 cents. (The price tag was still on it.  LOL)

Other than the main paper all the accent papers are paint chips from the hardware store!
I punched them, put rub ons on them, sanded them, etc.  It was kinda fun to work with them.  (Plus they were free from my vast collection I have amassed over the years from all our decorating projects! Yeah, I don’t throw anything away!  LOL)

I also had some BIG snowflake stickers left over from a past project.  I used a lot of velum sayings that were about happiness and joy. The little trees are quilling. Quilling is something I like to use in scrapbooking but rarely do because they don’t lay flat.  With this album anything goes since it is bound with big metal rings and doesn’t need to lay flat.

My son really liked the picture of him hitting his Dad’s best friend with a snowball!  I used the scrabble tiles to draw attention to that one.
I tore all the background paper because I thought it added to the soft snowy look.  (Plus if you cut you have to measure and stuff and who wants to do that!  LOL)

More paint chips, stickers, velum sayings and some snowflake punches.

On the back I journaled the whole thing with those old time office letter punches.  I really love using these in my scrapbooking!  I think it gives it a quirky retro feel.  (These would be really great for lapbooking too!  Wow, I never thought about that until now.  Stay tuned, we will be using these in a lapbook soon!  LOL)

This is my favorite type of project to do.  I didn’t buy anything special for this album, except the acrylic album itself.  Everything else is leftovers from other projects and thing I had on hand. I am very happy with how it came out!

I put a cup hook on the wall over my desk and have it hanging there.  I would like to get more of these acrylic albums to scrap. (Wouldn’t it be cool to have a whole wall of these?) Now every time I look at it I want to scrapbook more!  (Which is NOT good because I really need to get the house unpacked first!  LOL)

Free Olympic Lapbooks

June18

We haven’t had time to do this yet, but I wanted to share this free Olympic Lapbook just in case someone else is more organized than me this Summer!

http://www.homeschoolshare.com/summer_olympics_2008_lapbook.php

Xyron Sticker Makers

June17

My littles have been really into making sticker lately.  One of our favorite lapbooking/scrapbooking gizmos is the Xyron Create-a- Sticker machines. These are a really great tool for lapbooking!  I like them because the adhesive gets all the way to the edges and makes things lie flat.  This is great especially for the lapbooks the kids want to look at over and over.  It makes for less chance of things getting ripped or coming loose.

Here is my daughter showing off a couple of the stickers she made.

The small ones above are done on this gizmo.  It makes 1 1/2 inch wide stickers.

We have 3 of these and the bigger ones make 2 1/2 and 5 inch stickers.

We use the 1 1/2 inch one the most.  It seems to be the most versatile.  Of course the refills are the cheapest for this one too. *Which may be why I grab it whenever the littles want to make stickers.)

The machines cost starts at $10.00 for the 1 1/2 inch and go up to $30.00 for the 5 inch. They come with one cartridge of the sticker material.  I bought ALL of mine when they were on sale for 50% off at Micheal’s and Jo Ann’s. They also frequently have the refills on sale for 50% off.  (The refills cost from $5.00 to $15.00 at full price.)  I always scan the ads for sales and make sure to pick up refills when they are half price.

These are a luxury item and not required for lapbooking.  But, we do really enjoy ours and get a lot of use out of them.  If you are looking for a fun thing to keep your kids busy and entertained this summer I highly recommend getting the little one! (BTW, the kids do the art and I run them through the machine.  They tend to waste too much sticker material when  I let them do it.)

Doctors

June13

My 4 year old has never been to a doctor.  It wasn’t that I meant to never take him.  As I have posted about recently he was born at home.  Then when he was 3 weeks old we moved to Las Vegas.  I called the insurance company a couple times and got a list of approved doctors. But, Las Vegas has a terrible doctor shortage!  Whenever I would call the doctors on the list they would all say they were not taking new patients.  I went through this several times and finally I just gave up.  We rarely go to the doctor anyway.  Since we pretty much exclusively use homeopathy it is really never an issue.

So anyway, last night my 4 year old was watching the Lakers game with Dad.  One of the players who was out due to an injury was being interviewed.  They asked him when he was coming back and he said "I think I will be back soon, but I still have to talk to the Doctor."  my 4 year old looks at his dad and says "Does he mean Doc Oc or Dr. Who?"  (Doc Oc is a character in Spiderman and of Dr. Who is from the British TV show Dr. Who.)

ROFL!

Oviously we have done a good job exposing him to superheros and science fiction!  Doctors? Not so much!

We do have a doctor here lined up!  YAY!  She is actually the friend of a friend. I got to meet her a few years ago when she and my friend visited Las Vegas.  How cool is that!  So, I do plan on taking the kids to see her in the next few weeks. (I had an appointment with her yesterday.) I bet she will get a real kick out of my little mans take on doctors!

(Oh BTW, he doesn’t watch Dr. Who.  He just knows the name because his dad watches it.)

The Humbling Job of Parenting

June11

Yesterday I took the kids to get haircuts.  Normally I take them and then go back later and get mine done.  But, this time they were having a sale and I didn’t want to miss out on the $10.00 off for my haircut.  So bravely I decided to get mine done while we were there.  We arrived and the place was empty.  (This is a good sign and a benefit of going at 10:30 in the morning!)  They took the 2 boys right away and then a third sytlist shows up and takes my daughter. It was all going well.  You have never seen 3 more well behaved children!  (Keep reading you know what’s coming! LOL)  The boys finish up and it is my turn.  I sit my 4 year old down next to his big brother and he starts asking his big brother how to spell words.  Then he happily writes the word on his paper. My daughter’s hair is finished and she joins the fun.  All the stylist are commenting on how well behaved the kids are.  I thank them and assure them that they do have their moments.  I must admit I was feeling pretty good at this point!  I relax and get my hair done.  At one point my four year old speaks up from across the salon “Mom.”  Yes honey. ” I reply. “  “I love you.”  he says.   I tell you they all start gushing at this point.  Why are your kids so sweet?  Why do they get along so well?  What have you done to have such awesome kids?  I just laugh!

So we finish up.  I pay, they all get lollipops and we leave.  We take one step outside and my four year old announces “I am ready to go to Target and get my toy!”  What????  No one said anything about getting a toy?  I ask him why he thinks he is getting a toy?  He looks at me and says “Because you said we were going to Target and I want one!”  What???  This is NOT how things work at our house! My kids get an allowance and if they want something they have to pay for it.  He knew good and well he had no allowance saved up!  I inform him he is NOT getting a toy!  (Keep in mind all the stylist are for sure watching this through the window!  LOL)  He yells, he stomps his foot he does everything he can think of short of throwing himself on the hot cement and having a full blown fit.  I end up carrying him to the car as he is sobbing in my arms.

I just LOVE being a parent!  LOL

Soooooo….Instead of going to Target and getting groceries,  we head home.  He is asleep pretty much before we left the parking lot.  We get home and he is sent to his room.  The rest of the afternoon  he was not a happy boy.  Sometimes life is like that!

I always joke that I have a theory that any child has a 30% chance of melting down at any given time.  So since I have 3 kids I have a 90% chance of embarrassment every time I leave the house!  LOL  It really isn’t that bad.  Overall my kids rarely melt down.  But, when they do it is always a good reminder to remain humble.  When I see a Mom in a store with a child who is losing his mind I like to smile at her and whisper a prayer for her.  Because I have been there!  No matter how good my kids can be they can also go the other way without a seconds notice!  Most of the time they can recover and move on.  But, sometimes the only thing we can do is go home and hope tomorrow is better.

Yesterday was one of those days.

You know the only people who are always sure
about the proper way to raise children?
Those who’ve never had any.

Tattoos

June10

Okay, I admit I am not the tattooing type!  LOL  Awhile back my sister-in-law sent me information of Safety Tats and I finally realized there are tattoos I like!  These are just temporary tattoos, but I love this idea!

Whenever we are out and about at places like zoo’s, museums, etc. I worry about what would happen if my Little’s were separated from me.  We all know it can happen in a minute!  (We call our 4 year old Little Houdini because he has a knack for disappearing!) Recently I have started putting their homeschool ID cards on them with my cell phone number written on the back.  But here is an awesome idea that the kiddos can’t take off or lose!  These are temporary tattoos you can have made up with your own cell phone number on them!  The have several cute designs to choose from.  At $19.95 for 30 of them the price is within reason too!  HERE is the link where you can check them out.

There is also a LOT of good information on child safety at the website.  You can read more HERE.

While we are on the topic of tattoos here is another one that its funny!  My 13 year old saw these online and sent me the link.  I am sort of famous for writing notes to myself on my hand.  I know it’s tacky, but I can’t lose it!  LOL My kids think it is SO funny! I must not be the only one that does this!  Now you can buy TO-DO Tattoos!  Just put the temporary tattoo on your hand and fill in the lines with your to-do list!  I could sure use these!  LOL

On The Day She Was Born

June6

Since I shared my homebirth stories a couple of days a go I thought I would share my sons version too.  This was dictated to me by my 6 year old son 2 days after his sister was born at home.

On the day she was born my Mom woke me up and said she was having contractions. It was Sunday, we were suppose to go to church, but we couldn’t because Mom had aches and pains.

All day we were doing stuff.  I was playing Nintendo and sometimes I was watching Mom be in the spa having contractions.  Dad and I read from the Hardy Boys book, I laid in the birthing tub listening with my Spidey blanket, pillow and teddy, while Mom was in the spa.  We made a video.  Later that day my Mom was in the birthing tub and I was scared I wouldn’t be a good big brother.  But now I feel much better.  Mom was having the baby and for awhile I was scared.  I was playing a DVD game.  It didn’t take long for the baby to be born once Mom was in the birthing tub.  When the baby was being born I went into the living room.  My Mom sounded like a dinosaur!  HA,HA, HA!!!! One of the midwives came in the living room and told me the baby was born.  I even got to tell my Mom if it was a boy or girl!!!  It was a GIRL!!  She weighed 9 pounds 6 ounces and a was 21 1/2 inches long.  When I first saw her I knew I loved her.  When she was first born she was a little blue and crying.  My Dad took her and she tried to nurse off of him! I got to examine her placenta, it was disgusting but COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I asked the midwives LOTS of questions.  The they measured her.  I got up and looked at the scale and said :"She weighs a ton!" She was healthy and we were thankful.  I got to dress her for the first time.  That mean it was the first time she had ever been dressed!  I put on her 2 cute little socks and a cute little white outfit.  Now it was time for the midwives to leave.  I was knock-shoo on my Mom and Dad’s bed surrounded by family.  It was a great day and I really liked it!

February 27, 2001

Finally a BIG BROTHER!!!!

I had to laugh when I uploaded this picture.  I don’t ever remember noticing before that he fell asleep that night with one of his school books!  LOL  He also has a red sticker on his nose!  Funny kid!

We bought a copy of the book Welcome With Love and pasted his story inside.  We also added pictures from our daughters birth.  My daughter treasures that book and LOVES to read her brothers version of the day she was born.

My Homebirths

June4

Jimmy Carter was the first president to be born in a hospital, all those before him had been born at home. My son

I was talking to a new mom the other day at the McDonald’s Playland and the topic of homebirth came up. While we were talking I started thinking how weird it is that I have never blogged about my homebirth experiences.  Having my babies at home are some of my most treasured memories, so I guess it is time to share my experiences with others.

First off, I want to point out that having a baby at home is NOT as weird as you might be thinking!  Hospital birth is a relatively new thing!  For example I was a first generation hospital birth on my Mom’s side of the family and a second generation hospital birth on my dad’s side of the family.  (Meaning my mom was born at home and my dad was the first generation not to be born at home.  However, I am pretty sure most of my Dad’s older siblings were born at home.) Women were birthing babies long before hospitals were invented!

My first child was born in the hospital. It was 1994 and honestly I had never heard of homebirth.  I never considered any method of having a baby other than going to the hospital.  However, from the moment I conceived I dreaded that I was going to have to go to the hospital for the birth.  I am not a big fan of hospitals or western medicine. I associate hospitals with sickness and I in NO WAY think of giving birth as a sickness!  To me birth is a wonderful, beautiful things designed by God.  It is completely natural and a what my body is designed to know exactly how to do it.  So I lived in dread of the hospital.  When the time came to actually go to the hospital it was even worse than I expected!  Instead of being empowered to do what my body was designed for, I was powerless! I was seen as “the patient” and I was “dealt with”.  Procedures were "done on me" and I was not ever part of the decision making process. I am a very independent person and this was SO miserable for me!  I went into the whole thing thinking that I could and would have natural childbirth.  I quickly learned that my husband and I were the only ones there interested in my having this child naturally.  My husband and I were  intimidated and bullied until I submitted to a epidural.  Everything was out of my control and I was frightened and tramatized.  I had purposely picked a small practice with a low C-section rate.  But, little did I know that my doctor, nor his partner, nor the backup doctor would make it a priority to get to the hospital.  (Yep, my baby was delivered by a complete stranger! And it wasn’t because I it wasa fast delivery. I actually ended up in the hospital 5 days before the baby came and never once saw my doctor or the same doctor twice.) Once my child was born he was quickly whisked away from me.  I was not allowed to see or hold him for 24 hours!  He had a reaction to the medications that were forced upon me in the hospital and was having breathing difficulties. (What a horrible experience that was for me!  If it had not been for the compassionate Christan lady I shared a room with I cannot imagine how I would have made it through that first night!) Before we ever left the hospital I vowed to myself that if by some miracle we ever had another child I would NEVER come back to the hospital. I would never allow myself to be disrespected the way I was during my first child’s birth. I had no idea what other options I had, but I knew the next time had to be different.  Even to this day, almost 14 years later it is still painful for me to write about that time.  A time that should have been completely filled with joy is one of my most painful memories.

After my first child was born we moved from Los Angeles to Northern California.  Not long after we moved there was an article in the Sacramento newspaper about homebirth.  I wept as I read it!  I could not believe the difference between what I had been put through to what I was reading. The article talked about the beauty of the birthing process.  It talked about the husband and wife sharing the experience with as little interference as possible.  It focused on the power of the woman’s body and the joy of the experience!  I was immediately hooked!  As time passed I started meeting people who had their children at home. These were not wackos that didn’t know any better. These were intelligent women who trusted their bodies to do what it had been created to do.  I listened to their stories and knew that if I was ever blessed to give birth again I wanted to do it in the privacy of my own home.

Praise God!  In 2000 I found out that I was expecting again!  Right from the start I was excited about the actual birth process.  I contacted the Midwives that several of my friends had used and set up our first appointment.  At this point my husband was not completely committed to the home birth idea. He agreed that our hospital birth had been a fiasco, but, the idea of homebirth was a little scary to him.  After 10 minutes talking to the midwife we met with that day he was completely at ease. Honestly after talking with her we both believed that home was the safest place to have our baby!  She was confident and experienced (She had been assisting women in birth for over 25 years!)  She put us both completely at ease.  This was not a wacko thing to do!  And so began our journey into homebirth.

And what a journey it was!

With homebirth the whole process starts from the time we contacted the midwives. It was not just about checking my health to see if I could have the baby safely.  It was about building a relationship with the wonderful women (There were 3 of them Tosi, Claudia and Rachel.) who would be there to assist in our birth.  From the beginning they made it clear that they were there to assist. The birth was ours and they were not there to “deliver” the baby.  They made it clear that as the mom, I was the only one with the power to deliver this baby into the world!  They brought the children and I books to read. They loaned us videos to watch.  We laughed at every appointment!  They would come to my house for at least an hour each month.  I had all 3 of their pager numbers!  They fell in love with my baby as it grew inside me!  They looked forward to the day the baby would be born just like we did! (And NO WAY would they miss it!)

The day that my daughter was born was filled with joy! I knew early on that I wanted a water birth.  So a few days before my daughter came along a birthing tub was delivered to my house. I woke up the morning of my daughters due date with contractions.  We called midwifes and let them know the day had arrived! From that point on it was all about our family being together.  I sat in the Jacuzzi with the jets massaging my back.  My 6 year old son sat in the empty birthing tub next to me reading the Hardy Boys!  LOL (It didn’t have water in it yet!) We laughed, we ate, we drank frozen lemonade, we listened to music, we walked outside!  My husband put a loaf of bread in the bread maker so we would have something to feed the midwives once the baby was born.  To this day when I smell fresh baked bread I fondly remember that day.  My oldest son was there to support me.  He was SO excited! He could not wait to finally be a big brother! ( We have some really funny video of him jumping on the bed while I was having a contraction.  I have no memory of it and laughed my head off when I saw the video!) He patted my hand rubbed my back and encouraged me all the way. (Yes, he was a bit nervous too.  He actually chose to be in the other room during the last few minutes I was pushing. We left the choice up to him. I wanted him to have as much choice in his part of the birth as I did.) The midwives were there the whole time, but they made themselves scarce.  This was our time.  They came in and out of the room checking the baby’s heartbeat and my blood pressure.  They brought me food and drinks. They answered the phone so we would not be disturbed.  They sat next to me holding my hand and rubbing my back as the time drew closer.  They truly proved that the word Midwife, which means “with women”, is the appropriate name for their calling!

Waiting in the birthing tub!

At about 8:00 in the evening on February 25th, 2001 our daughter entered the world.  There were no bright lights or loud sounding equipment to greet her, just a tub of warm water that both her parents were in.  Her big brother was called in from the other room to announce whether he had a brother or a sister.  (Everyone was put under strict orders not to “look” until he did so he would be the first to know and could make the announcement!) She was not whisked away from us!  She was SO alert and responsive since she was free of all drugs! I was gently moved to the bed while her father held her.  (And she tried to nurse from him!  LOL  That is a very funny memory I only knew about because one of the midwives grabbed the camera and got a picture! Is it any wonder this child nursed until she was 3 1/2?   LOL)

Got Milk?

Our family spent hours together cuddled up in the bed. There was no rush to do anything.  If any of the midwives had anything else on their minds that night we would have never known it.  When we were ready she was weighed and checked out.  A beautiful 9 pound 6 ounce baby girl!  While we cuddled and nursed the midwives prepared use a meal.  (Including that yummy loaf of bread which we all shared!)  They carried the dinner into the room with a candle lit on the tray, singing happy birthday to our new born baby.  Everything was exactly the way I wanted it to be.  The midwives cleaned everything up, tucked us all into bed and left around midnight.  The warm and wonderful feelings of that night follow me to this day.

Me and my girl!

In the following days we saw the midwives frequently.  They came to check on the baby and me for 6 weeks. What love and care they gave us! They are truly our friends and we think of them as family. (They have a potluck 4 times a year and we wish we could make it to California for more of them!  How fun it is to show off our growing children to them!)

Claudia and my son dressing his new sister.

In 2003 we were again blessed beyond belief to find that we were expecting our third child! This time we had no reservations. We knew we would have a homebirth!  I remember calling Tosi a few hours after I knew I was expecting and we celebrated together over the phone! I also have a precious memory of going to my sonogram appointment with Claudia.  (Yes, you can have all the test you want and still have a homebirth!)   I also have such sweet memories of time spent with Rachel.  She is such a sweet, calm, supportive person.  She taught me to have great confidence in myself to give birth!

My 3rd child’s birth was a lot more stressful due to circumstances in our lives.  About halfway through the pregnancy we learned we would be moving out to Las Vegas in few weeks after his birth.  I was stressed beyond belief!  However, the birth was as beautiful as his sisters had been.  This time we had 2 kids to share it with.  I had prayed that it would happen during the night while my 2 year old slept. And true to form God answered that prayer! My water broke while I was nursing my daughter to sleep that night.  She was moved to her bed and I labored through the night.  It was a MUCH harder labor and delivery.  Not only did my little man enter the world weighing 11 pounds 8 ounces, but he thought he should come out elbow first!  YIKES!  However, this posed no problem for the midwives.  Once they realized what position he was in they gave me a few directions on how to position myself and out he came! (Praise the Lord for gravity!  LOL)  On December 15, 2003 we welcomed the final member of our family! You have never seen a BIGGER newborn!  LOL  I have such wonderful memories of my oldest son being with me during his brothers birth.  This time he was cool as a cucumber! He was a seasoned homebirth veteran at 9 years old!  LOL  He was there for me every minute, but instead of worrying about me and whether he should be in the room, he spent most of the night laying in my bed watching cartoons!  LOL  What wonderful memories I have of sharing that time with my husband and son!  And then as the sun came up and my youngest son was born in walked my 2 year old!  I will never forget seeing her standing there in her blue paddy footed pajama’s and hearing her say “Hey guys whatcha doing?”  Before anyone else could respond my son said “Mom had the baby!  Come look, we have a brother!”  Only in God’s perfect timing could all of this played out to such perfection.  Again I was gently moved to the bed and this time we were more anxious to weigh the baby.  We knew  he was a record breaker! LOL The midwives were delighted with his weight!  (Midwives pride themselves in bringing BIG healthy babies into the world!)  Again the midwives took care of everything, prepared the meal and sang our child’s first song to him.  “Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you! Happy birthday dear baby happy birthday to you!”  Soon the midwives left for the day and there we were.  A family of FIVE all tucked into bed together!  We spent the day snoozing, laughing, celebrating and making phone calls.  There was no rush, no place to go, nothing that needed to be done. We were all finally home!  We spent time bonding and learning what it meant to be complete.  The joy of that day will be with us all forever.

Tosi and our BIG boy!
Rachel  loving on the baby.

As I look back over my birth experiences I praise God for every moment of it. My birth experiences were the most empowering things that have ever happened to me!  Even though my hospital birth was not what I wanted it to be, it grew me into knowing that I could take the power in my hands and create the birth experiences I wanted.  This is only  a brief sketch of all that we experienced.  A few weeks ago I was unpacking the kids baby books and I came across a letter our midwives sent to me along with our 3rd child’s birth records.  It read…

We hope Las Vegas is treating you well!  Remember that these pages are only a mere outline of the hard work, love and courage you poured into your child’s birth.  You were magnificent! Thank you once again for inviting us to be your midwives. We have truly enjoyed getting to be with your family at such an important time in the life of your family. We are so sorry to have lost you to another state, but we are your midwives forever!

Wow!  I don’t think anyone else has ever called me magnificent! And honestly that is how I felt after my homebirths!  I felt so empowered.  I felt a closeness to God like I had never know before. I literally rejoiced not just about the babies but about the amazing experience I had.  There are no words to express how grateful I am that I was given the opportunity to see the potential God built into my body be put to use.

Me and my BIG BOY!

I know there are many women who have wonderful memories of their hospital births.  It is not my intention in any way to disregard or disrespect those births.  One of the reasons I have probably not written this before is I would NEVER want my oldest son to think that his birth was any less joyful to me than that of his siblings.  I talked with him about this yesterday.  I wanted to make sure he was okay with me writing this post.  He assured me he completely understood how I felt. He also said he is grateful we had his siblings at home so he could be such a BIG part of it all!  I assured him that although the process of being hospitalized was less than joyful the end result was meeting him and NOTHING could have taken the joy out of that! However, my homebirth experiences were life changing over the top experiences! I doubt that is all my life anything will ever compare to them!

My precious kids!  Just moments after they met all met for the first time.

I told you I was outside the box!

If you would like to learn more about homebirth I highly recommend the book Homebirth by Sheila Kitzinger.  For kids I recommend the book Welcome With Love by Jenni Overend.

The Presidents

June3

Since our school year has been a little discombobulated due to moving across country,  I wanted my oldest son to still work on a little school over the Summer.  One project he has chosen to do is a study of the presidents.  What we decided is that he would make a list of all the presidents and then find one interesting fact about each. The he will write a paragraph or two about the president.  Here is the list he has put together.

  1. George Washington was the first president.

  1. John Adams was first to live in the White House.

  2. Thomas Jefferson made the Louisiana Purchase

  3. James Madison was called “Father of the Constitution”

  4. James Monroe 3rd president to die on the 4th of July

  5. John Quincy Adams was the first president to be another presidents son.

  6. Andrew Jackson signed the “Indian Removal Act” and forced Native Americans to move.

  7. Martin Van Buren first natural born American citizen to become president.

  8. William Henry Harrison he died of pneumonia just 31 days after being inaugurated and giving a 2 hours speech in the rain.

  9. John Tyler First president to become president without being elected, (Via vice presidency.)

  10. James K. Polk died 3 months after leaving office.

  11. Zachary Taylor was a war hero.

  12. Millard Fillmore opened up trade with Japan

  13. Franklin Pierce opened up slavery to any state that want to allow it.

  14. James Buchanan was the only president to never marry.

  15. Abraham Lincoln ended slavery.

  16. Andrew Johnson was the first president to be impeached.

  17. Ulysses S Grant was the only president to get a speeding ticket.

  18. Rutherford B. Hayes was the first president to use a telephone. His number was “1”.

  19. James A. Garfield was killed by one of his own supporters.

  20. Chester A. Arthur was once a teacher.

  21. Grover Cleveland was married in the White House!

  22. Benjamin Harrison was William Henry Harrison’s grandson.

  23. Grover Cleveland (Again) only president to serve 2 terms that weren’t in a row!

  24. William McKinley was first to use campaign buttons.

  25. Theodore Roosevelt built the Panama Canal

  26. William Howard Taft started the seventh inning stretch at baseball games.

  27. Woodrow Wilson was president during WWI

  28. Warding G. Harding wore size 14 shoes.

  29. Calvin Coolidge was born on the 4th of July.

  30. Herbert Hoover was president during the great depression

  31. Franklin D. Roosevelt was related through blood or marriage to 11 other presidents!

  32. Harry S. Truman ended WWII by using the Atomic Bomb on Japan.

  33. Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the bill that created NASA

  34. John F. Kennedy was killed midway through his term in Dallas, Texas

  35. Lydon B. Johnson was president during the Vietnam War.

  36. Richard Nixon was the first president to visit all 50 states.

  37. Gerald Ford didn’t run for either presidency or vice presidency, but Ford gave him the vice presidents job when the vice president resigned.

  38. Jimmy Carter was the first president to be born in a hospital, all those before him had been born at home.

  39. Ronald Reagan acted in 50 movies before being elected as the oldest president ever.

  40. George H. W. Bush survived 4 plane crashes while in the Navy

  41. Bill Clinton was almost kicked out of office.

  42. George W. Bush is the second president to be the son of another president.

I think the list alone is interesting and eye opening.  I never thought about what it would be like for the president NOT to have a telephone or the fact that the first presidents were not born in the United States. (And how weird is it that by the 5th president 3 had already died on the 4th of July?!?!)

I look forward to reading the whole thing when he is done.  We may make it into a lapbook.  My original thought was that it would make a good lapbook, but now I am thinking it may just turn out to be a really interesting report.

The primary resource he used to put together this list was the book Don’t Know Much About the Presidents.

Blue Tape

May28

My four year old LOVES to tape things!  I recently discovered that if I give him the blue low tack painters tape he can play with tape completely on his own.  Regular tape is too tricky for him to get off the spool.  If he does get it off then it just sticks to itself. Which aggravates him to no end. The blue tape however is easy for him to pull apart even if it does stick to itself.  Of course it is a little more expensive than regular tape.  But, he has so much FUN with it  I think it is well worth the few extra cents!

It all started with him covering sticks and pieces of paper with the tape.
This would keep him busy for hours.

Then he started using the tape to make his letters on paper.
His sister really likes to do this with him.

Now, he has moved on to making himself costumes!

He is pretty proud of his work!

It didn’t take him long to figure out there were some design flaws with his mask! LOL

Oh, the other advantage to this kind of tape is that it easily removes from furniture, floors, clothing, skin, hair, the dog, etc…

Grandma Clean

May23

My Mom, Sister and Niece are coming to see us this weekend!  YAY!!!!

A few years ago I came across this cartoon that my kids LOVE.  The Dad is telling the kids that they have to clean the house.  The kids want to know how clean.  They ask if it has to be "Operating Room clean."  he shakes his head and says grimly  "No, it needs to be Grandma clean!"  The kids all look faint and run off screaming!  LOL  So ever since whenever my Mom is coming we try and get the house "Grandma clean".

Since we are still up to our necks with boxes I have already warned Grandma that the house is a wreck and she is just going to have to deal with it.  (My sister even suggested I pile boxes on their beds each morning and then they can’t go to bed until those boxes are unpacked!  I LIKE that idea! )

Yesterday I told the kids we had to clean up.  They looked around with doubtful looks on their faces.  There is no chance of getting the house "Grandma clean" in less than 48 hours!  Then cautiously they asked "Does it have to be Grandma clean?"  I thought for a minute,  looked around and replied "I think this time we may have to settle for Truck Stop bathroom clean!"  ROFL!!!

The kids LOVED that response!

Sorry Mom!

Dolphins in the Desert

May22

I figure since we have moved many, many miles from our last location it is now alright to reveal where we have been living for the last 4 years.

So sit down and get ready!

Yep, Las Vegas Baby!  Now, I am sure you are probably wondering how a conservative Christian homeschool family ever ended up in Las Vegas!  Well, I will tell you it was NOT my idea! I went there kicking and screaming!  Everything in my mind, body and soul told me NOT to go to Las Vegas.  However, my husband had a different view.  His job wanted to transfer him and it seemed like a good career opportunity at the time. I had always told him I would follow his job anywhere since it allowed me to stay home, but I didn’t mean LAS VEGAS!!!  However, no matter how much I heard no, he heard yes and eventually I did the only thing I could.  I submitted to my husband.  So with our 9 year old, 2 year old and 3 week old we headed off to Sin City.  I was sure my children would be ruined for life!

To say I was terrified was an understatement.  I had been to Las Vegas a few time.  (My husband and I were married there 15 years earlier.) and although there were a few fun things to do is was certainly not a place I wanted to expose my children to!  However, I had to trust God and my husband.

One day shortly after we had moved I was in my "making the best of it" mode. I took the kids to the Mirage Casino to go see the dolphins and other exotic animals they have there.  The exhibit is really nice, but of course you have to walk through the whole Casino to get through it.  After we had been there watching the dolphins awhile my then 9 year old son said to me "You know Mom, we are just like these dolphins in the desert.  As Christians we don’t really feel we belong here, but we just have to make the best of it, trust God and try to adjust."  WOW!  From the mouths of babes!  From that point on I always considered us "dolphins in the desert."  We may not feel we belonged there, but we could survive and God would provide what we needed to get us through a challenging time.

And provide He did!  I cannot say that my heart turned around and I got a good attitude about living in Las Vegas right then and there.  Trust me I continued to argue with both my husband and God about what we were doing there.  But, God did provide the most amazing people to love and support us.  It never occurred to me back then that someday when we did leave I would actually MISS people from Las Vegas!  I never imagined the amazing Christians I would meet there that would teach me so much.  I never dreamed the lessons He was going to teach me or the changes He would make in me along the way.  Much of the journey was NOT pretty.  I am not necessarily proud of my attitude or actions along the way.  But, I did learn more in those 4 uncomfortable years that I ever could of if He had left me in my comfortable place where I yearned to stay.

In the end I am glad He loved me enough to take me down a REALLY tough path. Our pastor in California use to say "God loves you just the way you are, as a matter of fact he loves you too much to leave you there!"  I am glad for the pain and sorrow.  I learned to trust and love both God and my husband in a whole new way.  I now know for sure that both of them did it for my own good.  They were doing what needed to be done, even when I didn’t want them to.

As for all the harm I thought would come to my kids?  They have pretty much come out of Las Vegas unharmed.  I have had to explain a few things to my oldest that I would have preferred not to. (But, in this day and age it is probably a blessing he learned these things from Mom and Dad!)  He did not turn into the hard core sinner I thought he would!  LOL  The Little’s are pretty much unaware of the Sin part of Sin City.  They associate Las Vegas with home, friends, church and buffets!  LOL  (If anyone asks my now 7 year old if she liked Las Vegas she says "I LOVED the buffets!" LOL)

So what did I learn in my four years in the desert?  (I like to think I am in good company with being sent to the desert by God!)

  1. I learned that no matter where you go God is there.  I know as a Christian of nearly 30 years I should have already known that!  The truth is that I would have said I knew it, but now I really do know it deep in my heart
  2. I learned that sometimes God does His best work when we are at our lowest point.  – Honestly, I could not have learned the things I did had we not have moved away from California.  I was so comfortable there.  I loved my life and even though it revolved around church, it wasn’t always about God.  I really thought I had it much more together than I did and I didn’t even realize how much he still had to teach me!
  3. I learned that I can get mad at God and He will still love me.  I mean really mad.  There were times I was amazed He did not send a lightening bolt for me!  I learned that people in the Bible argued with God. (Moses and Lot both come to mind.)
  4. I learned that I need to be less judgemental and accept and love people. Even if I don’t approve of someone actions they are just as much a child of God as I am.  Sometimes I don’t even think there is that much more sin in Las Vegas than in any little town.  I just think that when you live in a place that proudly calls itself “Sin City” is is more socially acceptable to be open about your sin.  I have seen such brokenness in the lives of so many people in Las Vegas.  It is really heart breaking.  I really did learn to see beyond the brokenness and love people in a different way during the time we spent in Las Vegas.  Not only is sin more acceptable, there is also a LOT more temptations!  Staying pure in Las Vegas is not an easy task.
  5. I learned that God will protect my children even better than I can! – Wow, the fact that my kids came out pretty much unscathed from our 4 years in Las Vegas I can only attribute to Him!  We learned pretty quickly to stay away from the Strip.  (Although you can’t live there and avoid it completely.)  So many times I was amazed as I would see some sign on a taxi or billboard that horrified me and I would look back at my kids in the car and they were minding their own business blissfully unaware of what was happening outside the car windows. If that is not divine intervention I don’t know what is!
  6. I learned that God will get his point across!  Even if it means your husband’s time in the desert is over, God will keep you in the desert another year to figure out what you are suppose to learn!  - After my husband left to start his new job I knew this is what God was up to!  (The humor of my husband wanting to go there and me being stuck there was NOT lost on me!  LOL) I knew as the saying goes that “God isn’t finished with me yet!”  So while the kids and I stayed behind waiting for the house to sell I adjusted my attitude!  I began to pray that God would not let us leave until I had learned whatever it was He had sent me there to learn! (YIKES)  I began to dive into Bible study and church.  I applied myself like I never had before!  And yes, I did learn what He wanted me to in that last year.  I wish I could say is was something earth shattering, well it was for me!  But, all I can say is this list is what He need me to really get into my heart.  I have no idea where God is going to take me from here.  But, I do know I am a better person for the 4 years I spent in Las Vegas.  I love the Lord even more and I love others more too!  That is a lesson worth learning!

One last thing…During the years we were in Las Vegas whenever we would travel people would always ask  me "What is the weirdest thing about living in Las Vegas?"  I would always reply "The weirdest thing about living in Las Vegas is that people who live there don’t realize it is weird to live in Las Vegas!"  LOL

If you would like to read more about what God is doing in Las Vegas I would highly recommend the book Stripped: Uncensored Grace on the Streets of Vegas.  It was written by a Las Vegas pastor and it is awesome!

If you are interested in learning about an amazing ministry that is coming to Las Vegas check out The Vegas Project!

New Desks

May21

I think it is a sure sign you are a homeschooler when you get excited over a new desk!  LOL  When we first looked at this house I knew I wanted my husband to build me a desk in the kitchen.  What didn’t occur to me until we moved in is that the Little’s would want one right next to Mom’s!  (I don’t know why I didn’t think of it since I am know as "The Kid Magnet!"  LOL)

Here they are at the new desk Dad built for us!
As you can see theirs in just like mine except lower.  One thing I have found is it is hard to find a table and chairs for kids passed the age of about 3.  There are plenty of them for toddlers, but once they outgrow that size they are hard to find.  I had to hunt for these adorable little red chairs!

Don’t they look happy?
My kids spend so much time cutting, coloring, writing, drawing and doing playdough they really need their own space for it.  In the old house they were always having to put everything away so we could use the dining room table. They are pretty happy to have their very own desk space now!

My older son also got his own new desk!
He had a similar one before we moved, but it was all metal and it was always shocking him.  Sometimes it would even make his computer freeze up and he’d have to re-boot.  That can’t be good!  LOL

Here is his new weird chair!
Yep, it is made out of bungie cords! It is actually pretty comfy.  Although it feels weird to sit in until you get use to it.  He saw it when we went looking for chairs for the Little’s and I just decided he should have it.  He was so surprised!  We almost always buy things used so this was a big treat for him.

It is nice that all 5 of us have our own desks here.
I am expecting some serious learning to happen now! (I love this picture. He was making me a thank you note for taking him to the park! He is such a sweetie!)

Of course I am sure there will be plenty of this happening too!  LOL

Our Little Robot

May20

My 4 year old has been asking for a "Robot Suit" for weeks.  Last weekend while I was out running errands he and Dad made one!

TA-DA!!!!
You and I might see a vacuum cleaner box painted red, but to him it is all robot!  The fact that he got to make it with Dad only makes it 100 times more special!  I am the crafty one in the family, so I was quite impressed that he and Dad could come up with this without me!  I have a zillion ideas about adding dryer vent arms and a panel of nuts, juice lids and fuses as buttons.  But, I think I will keep quiet for now.  He couldn’t love it anymore!

His sister had no interest in it until the camera came out!  LOL
Here she is posing while her little brother "pushes her buttons".  Trust me, she is usually the one pushing her brothers buttons!  LOL

NASA

May19

Another fun thing we did while we were in Houston was go to….

Before we go any further you have to know that I am a BIG ole’ geek when it comes to the Space program.  Being a child of the 60′s the whole going to the Moon thing was a HUGE part of my childhood.  I was spellbound by it!  I remember being 4 years old and seeing Neil Armstrong make that "giant leap for mankind" onto the surface of the moon.  News from the Moon was constantly on TV and in the newspaper.  It was an amazing to be grow up and imagine what the future could hold.

Then there was the whole I Dream of Jeannie show!  LOL  My sister and I watched every episode at least a zillion times!  LOL  I loved that show.  I loved how glamorous the life of an Astronaut seemed.  I loved seeing the outside shots of  NASA and the rockets going up.  It was all so different than the life of a little girl growing up in Kansas!

So going to NASA is a thrill for me!  By far my favorite thing was getting to go to Mission Control!  I mean I grew up watching men being sent to the moon from that room!  WOW!!!  (This is actually the second time we have been to NASA Houston.  But, the first time we went my 2nd child was 6 weeks old and honestly I don’t remember much from that trip!  LOL  We happened to be in Texas for a wedding and I HAD to go!  In retrospect I got A LOT more out of it this time! )

Here are my excited children on the Tram ready to leave the Visitor Center and go on the tour of NASA!
Can you  tell they share my enthusiasum?  :^)

Here is the entrance to the stairs for Mission Control.  (I know right now you are all thinking…This is going to be a looooooooooooooooooooong post!  LOL)
The reason I am posting this is to reminisce about all the stairs we had to climb to get to Mission Control!  LOL  I wish I could remember exactly how many there were, but I think that Mission Control is on the 8th floor.  I can’t imagine any building being build in this day and age where you had to WALK to the 8th floor!  When I worked at ABC I worked on the 3rd floor and they had the stairs locked because it was too much of a liability to have people climbing stairs!  LOL  I wonder if that could be one of the reasons people where so much thinner in the 60′s?  (DUH!!!)

Now for Mission Control….drum roll please…
I am telling you it was like time traveling into the past!  They don’t use this Mission Control anymore.  They built a new one a few years ago.  (I am guessing they have an elevator to get to it!  LOL)  But, this is the one used through the 1990′s!  One of the cool things we got to do in this room was listen to the people on the International Space Station talking to Mission Control in  Houston live!  COOL!!!

Here is my oldest in front of a historic picture of the men in Mission Control celebrating when the first men landed on the moon.

We saw this on the way over to Mission Control.
They said they use liquid nitrogen to test everything that goes into space to see how it will react to the freezing temperatures.

Here are the kids at the Astronaut Training Site.

All of the things in this room are life size modules that the Astronauts train in.

The kids LOVED this!

Here are the space suits they train in.

This is a full size trainer of the Space Shuttle minus it’s wings so it will fit in the room.

We were lucky to see this one!
This is the new Mars Rover they are developing to send to Mars in the future.  The tour guide said this was one of the 1st times he had seen it out on the lawn for testing and we were luck to get to see it.  Very cool!

This was something we didn’t get to see the 1st time we went.  They took us to a HUGE Building that houses a full size rocket including all it’s engines.  It was HUGE!!!
I never thought about these being so HUGE when I have seen them being launched on TV!  It was mind boggling.

Here are the engines on the back that launch it.

Here is the info on the engines above.
WOW!

This is back at the visitor center. They have a awesome space themed kids climbing structure.  My 4 year old  had a blast here!

Then we checked out the hands on exhibits. In this one my kids were in the role of Mission Control.

The kid Mission Control talks to the kids in this space craft and they do experiments together over the computers.

Here is may daughter in the space craft  working with another kid in Mission Control.

Here my 13 year old is learning about what things weigh on other planets.

More hands on learning!  Can you tell he LOVED it!

Here he is learning how they dock in space with other space crafts.
There was a little light on the chair and you had to maneuver yourself to shine the light into a small hole to achieve a successful docking.

While we were there my kids took their turn holding up the Moon!  LOL

And this is me!  As close to being an Astronaut as I will ever get!  I like the suit, it is quite slimming! LOL

There are about 100 other pictures I could post from our day at NASA, but I think you get the idea…It was a GOOD day!

The Princess of Pancakes

May16

My daughter LOVES to cook.  She has been begging to take over the pancake making for months now.  I on the other hand don’t like to cook.  This is one thing I would rather NOT do with my kids!  So I am always telling her "One of these days".  Well,  yesterday I finally let her make the pancakes!

Here she is scooping the batter

Waiting to  flip.

Flipping!

The proud Princess of Pancakes!

While on the topic of cooking here is may daughters newest cookbook!
I found it last weekend on clearance for $4.00.  This is a reprint from the 1950′s version.  She is LOVING it and spends endless hours scouring it’s pages!

Here are her other cookbooks.
The two on the right were mine when I was a kid.  The Mickey Mouse one was a gift to me from a co-worker when I quit work after having my first child.  She knew I hate to cook and thought maybe Mickey would make it more fun!  LOL

This is her favorite
Her Aunt made it for her when she was staying in Houston.  It has all the recipes they cooked together while Dad and I were away packing and moving.  There are blank pages to add future recipes too.

My four year old likes the Mickey Mouse one.  He likes all things Mickey!  (Notice the shirt he is wearing./:^)
My daughter reading all these cookbooks reminds me of my oldest son when he learned to read.  All he cared about was reading the text in video games! He would spend hours reading the little screen of his Gameboy. LOL  I guess that is the key to getting your kids to love reading.  Let them read about what they love!

Deschooling

May15
I got an email from a reader yesterday asking:

Hi Jamin,

Your Mother’s Day card was so special and precious.  I have just started receiving your emails, so I am just now learning about your family and homeschooling.  I know you are busy with just moving, but I wanted to ask you how you help your children to love or enjoy homeschooling.

She goes on to say that due to circumstances beyond her control…( adding 2 new babies to the family, moving to a new State, Mom having 2 surgeries, etc.) the decision was made to put the children in the local school for awhile.  While the kids liked the school, Mom and Dad made the decision for them to return home to get a Christian education.

Now the kids are yearning to return to school and Mom is struggling to make homeschooling easy and peaceful.  The kids are repeatedly asking to return to school.

The email continues:

I really want my children to love being at home, to love learning.  I have so much to pray about.  Some days I just want to give up, and call it quits.  But, then, I remember that I said to myself that this first year homeschooling with the babies would be hard, that there is a greater goal in view, and that my children’s hearts are worth the battle that I must face–in whatever form it comes to me.

If you have any tips for helping your children love homeschooling, please send them on.  I was so impressed that your child said that you always make him smile everyday, and that your other child said that you are so kind to them, even when they misbehave.

The main thing I want is a peace-filled, and enjoyable day as I teach and train my children.  Is this an unreasonable desire?  Am I expecting more than I should?  Anyway, I would love any bits of wisdom you could send whenever you have time to send it.

Here is my response:

Hi,

Thanks for writing.  I can completely understand what you are saying about being overwhelmed.  I have had 2 babies while homeschooling too.  And we moved when my youngest was 3 weeks old.  Homeschooling is a daunting task without having babies in the house.  Then you added 2 surgeries.  Oh my!  What a load you have had! Whew!

The first thing I would say is don’t be hard on yourself.  You have done the best you can and for awhile that included putting your children in school.  My situation is a little different from yours because my kids have never been in school.  They have thought of it as an option, nor have I.  So therefore they don’t compare it or really know anything about it.   With that said here are a few things I would do in your situation.

First of all I would sit them down and tell them that going back to the local school is not an option.  (Only tell them this if you really mean it!) Explain to them that going to school was something that you all choose because of the situation of having new babies and surgeries but that is over.  Let them know that you and Dad are in agreement.  You are now a homeschooling family and that is not going to change.  The reason I would do this is it will set boundaries and put their minds at ease.  Kids want to know Mom and Dad are in charge and know what they are doing.  I think by letting them firmly know that door is closed that it will set the stage for more successful homeschooling.

Next I would work on what is called deschooling in the homeschooling world.  Deschooling is a process of "unlearning" to think of school in terms of traditional public school and beginning the process of thinking of homeschooling as a means to gain an education.  Deschooling is also a time to re-connect as a family.  This is a time when Mom and Dad establish themselves as the educators of their own children.  This is done by NOT doing traditional school for a period of time.  Unschooling is a great way to work through this process.  Basically you would just spend time having FUN with your children.  Let them pick what they would want to learn about and spend time doing a unit study.  Do crafts, take field trips, read books together, act out plays, go out to lunch, go to the park  Set aside the curriculum and have fun and learn together!  Show them the benefits of homeschooling!  Show them that there is more to life than bookwork and enjoying time together is important.  Make them like homeschooling better than the local school!

Something else that is SUPER important is to get connected with other homeschoolers.  Humans are social creatures, the kids need friends that are available in the day when they are.  It is important for your children to have peers who are living and learning the same way they are.  Once they see that they that their are other "normal" kids out their being homeschooled just like them it will help them with the transition. You need Moms to connect with and lean on. Once you see that other people surviving this you will feel better!  LOL  But seriously, it is good for you to see what other people are doing, get support, share ideas and know that we all have bad days!

I hope that helps.  I have always said it is much easier to homeschool from the start than to take kids out of school and start homeschooling.  I have seen many people make the transfer to homeschooling successfully though.  It is a lot more effort than just homeschooling from the start though!

Hang in there.  Please know that every day is NOT a bed of roses at our house.  There are days I just throw my hands up and hope tomorrow is better!  LOL  But, in the long run it is SO worth it!  Having my kids think I am smart, nice, kind and funny makes it all worthwhile!

Here are some articles on deschooling if you want more information.

Happy Homeschooling,

Green!!!

May13

I keep mentioning how we are all LOVING seeing GREEN after 4 years in the beige desert.  So I figured I should post some pictures of this glorious GREEN we are all so taken with!  LOL

Here are the kids posing under a tree at the park that is about 2 blocks from our house.

Here is a broader shot of the park.

This is the creek that runs through the park:

Another shot of the creek:

My babies and my fur baby:

I just love all the overgrown foliage around the creek:

My little stick collector:

So there you have it, our lovely
GREEN!  LOL  It is so nice that when we need a break we can run over to such a beautiful place in 2 minutes, stretch our legs, get fresh air and be home without having to be gone all day. :^)

My Mother's Day Card

May12

The kids did a GREAT job making my Mother’s Day card!

The idea of this card is that the kids make a list of things that Mom does on the big card in the middle. Then on the MOM cards they each write attributes of Mom.  My kids also wrote a little message to me on the MOM cards.

Here is what they wrote on the You do so much! card:

You cook for us, clean for us, shop for us.  You teach us, you love us.  You let us have friends over.  You work.  You love us.  You put us to bed, you take us places.  You teach us about God.  You buy us things we need.  You make us laugh.  You help us.  You help us get better when we are hurt.  You listen, even when we talk about video games!  You give us everything you can.

On the MOM cards they wrote:

M – My 13 year old – Dear Mom, Thank you for doing so much for us.  I love you.  You are funny, you make me laugh every single day.

O – My 7 year old – I love you Mom! You are kind and nice to us even when we misbehave.

M – My 4 year old – (Scribbles) You are smart and know a lot of stuff.

Let’s see…funny, nice, kind and smart!  I can’t complain about my kids thinking those are my attributes.  Needless to say I love the card very much!  They spent a lot of time working on it.  My 13 year old took his brother and sister in his room and they worked on the card for at least an hour!  I will treasure it forever! :^)

You can use most any measure when you’re speaking of success. You can measure it in fancy homes, expensive car or dress. But the measure of your real success is one you cannot spend — It’s the way your child describes you when talking to a friend. Martin Buxbaum

Election Lapbook

May8

My oldest son completed his Election Lapbook yesterday.

Here it is:

Cover
We had a lot of other ideas for the cover, but since the state of our house in currently mayhem, we kept it simple!  LOL

The How To Run A Campaign was my favorite booklet.
My son had to think though how he would run a campaign answering questions like: How will I be know to the public?, Will I participate in debates?, How can I tell others my ideas?, etc.

In this one I really liked the Donkey and Elephant booklets.  I had never known why the parties were known by those characters.  According to what my son found out that they came from THIS political cartoon in the 1800′s

In the What qualifications do I need to run for office?  It has 3 booklets inside.  One for U.S. Representative, Senator and President.  It is interesting to see the differences in the qualifications.
In Voter’s Registration he learned how to fill out a voter’s registration card.

This is the back.  We made a pocket to include the worksheets he completed from HERE.

One thing that we learned while my son was doing this lapbook is this is the last Presidential election he will be too young to vote in!  YIKES!  I don’t know if I was ready to know that one!

This is a FREE lapbook.  We found all th printables HERE.

When I was looking for the link to the free lapbook we did I came across another free Election Lapbook too!  HERE is the link to the other one.

Clothespin Learning

May7

Can clothespins and a hanger help you memorize the books of the Bible? Absolutely!!!

Old Testament

New Testament
To help my daughter memorize the books of the Bible I wrote all of the books of the Bible on clothespins. On the back of them they are numbered and say OT or NT for Old Testament and New Testament.

Close up of names on the clothespins.
Now she can sing the song she learned to memorize the books and find the right clothespins to clip them all in order.  Once she has them all clipped she can turn it over and see if all the numbers are in order.  So it’s self checking!  She can also use the pins to test her knowledge of which books are in the Old and which are in the New Testament.  I will probably hang a string somewhere in the schoolroom when we get it all set up so she can work on them their too.

After I got the Books of the Bible ones done my 4 year old asked if I could make him some clothespins.  So I did his as the ABC’s!
I put upper case at the top and lower case at the bottom.

On the back I numbered them 1-26 so he can use them to work on his numbers too!

The kids love them!  Huhmmmm, what else can I teach them with clothespins???

Teacher Appreciation Day – May 6, 2008

May6

I just happened to come across this website the other day and learned that today is Teacher Appreciation Day.  In honor of all the AWESOME homeshcool Mom’s I know I thought I would re-post my Homeschool Teacher of the Year post…

Congratulations to the Homeschool Teacher of the Year.  This outstanding teacher is an amazing example of Homeschool education at it’s best!  This educator is confident conducting class for several grades at one time.  It is not out of the question for her to have have preschoolers and high schoolers all in the same classroom!  Not only does she teach these multiple levels, but also she trains the older student to work with the younger ones.  Curriculum selection is the sole responsibility of this outstanding educator.  Not only does she chose the curriculum used by her students, but she has to budgets and pays for all curriculum used.  Along with her responsibilities for the schools finances she develops creative solutions for teaching her students.  This includes, but is not limited to; writing songs, designing craft projects, cooking from scratch  and organizing field trips to coordinate with her lesson plans.

In addition to all the amazing things this teacher does with her students she is also fully responsible for their care, feeding & clothing.  She cooks all their meals, does all their laundry, drives them to all activities, (Of course she is also training her students to do all these things as she does them,)  She is completely responsible for the character training and discipline training of her students.

This educator is the ultimate multi-tasker! It is quite common to find her nursing a baby while teaching a Math lesson or cooking dinner while quizzing a student on spelling words.  The car is yet another classroom for this creative teacher.  She keeps the CD player going with CD’s that are educational, therefore teaching and reviewing with her students as they travel to activities.  Lectures are also frequently given while she drives.  These can range in topic from manners to the Biblical lesson of "Love one another". She has been know to teach health and self care lessons to the entire class while simultaneously potty training a preschooler.  This might also be a good time to mention that this incredible professional receives NO pay for the services she provides and works 24/7!

On top of all she deals with she is frequently questioned by well meaning people who make it clear they don’t really understand why she does what she does.  She is continually asked questions about her teaching methods and her choice to home educate her students.  These questions are gracefully answered while she pays for groceries and removes unpaid for candy from the hands of her students.

In her spare time she is wholly devoted to sharing her homeschool experiences with other educators like herself.  She has been known to volunteer time with her local homeschool group, organize a homeschool co-op, blog at homeschoolblogger.com, speak at homeschool conventions and meetings and generally be available to other homeschoolers that need support and encouragement.

Congratulations to this amazing teacher!  Her contribution to the future should not be forgotten and neither should her name.  Her students lovingly call her, Mom.

Kudos to all the awesome homeschool teachers I know out there!  Each of you truly are the Teacher of the Year in my book!

It’s demanding work to be a teacher, even during its best moments. Sometimes, teachers come across students who require them to summon every last ounce of patience and understanding. When those times come, I just ask you remember, one day that student may become the President.
George W. Bush

Presidential Libraries

May5

While I was getting my kids acclimated to staying at their Aunt and Uncles we did a couple of fun day trips in the Houston area.  The first one was a trip to the George  Bush Presidential Library.  I LOVE Presidential Libraries!  I have been to the Eisenhower, Truman, Nixon, Reagan and Bush.  There are 7 others I have not yet made it to.  Someday I hope to have visited them all!  Whether I agree with the politics of a particular President or not there is so much fascinating History along with each of the Presidents Libraries.  I really like the personal things like the First Ladies dresses and seeing things that were given to the Presidents and First Ladies as gifts while they were in office.  Each of the Libraries seem to give an insight into the personality of the President.  The kids and I had a great time at the Bush Library.

Here is a little of what we did.

Here are the kids outside the Library.

One thing we really enjoyed about this Library is they have gone out of their way to make it kid friendly.  When we entered each of the kids were given a clipboard with questions to answer.  Each of the answers could be found by finding the Millie Bush dogs throughout the Museum.

The kids LOVED finding Millie!

They also had a lot of hands on exhibits.  Here my little guy tried his hand at Piloting a plane during WWII.

This is Barabara Bush’s wedding dress.  So lovely!

This exhibit was really fun for the kids.  It was in the section that covered President Bush’s time in the CIA.  They had a body heat camera that was controlled by satellite where you can see yourself via the satellite.  Very interesting and kinda nervwracking!  LOL

This was just a little moving lighted logo that moved around on the floor.  My little guy thought it was SO fun to chase and jump on it.  LOL

This is an exhibit where you get to look into the windows of the White House.  You can push the buttons to look around the room and see everything from different angles.

My fellow Americans…
She needs to get a little taller before she can be President!

This was the kids room that is dedicated to literacy. They have all kinds of kids books.  (Remember, Barabara Bush’s pet project was promoting literacy.)

Here are the kids in front of the mini White House.
One of the fun things they had in the kids room was a TV running with videos the Bushes had put together.  Some of them where clips from shows they had been on like David Letterman.  Our favorite was The President and Barbara racing on Segways.  It was hysterical.  When we left I asked my oldest if he had learned anything that day.  He said "Yeah, I learned that President and Mrs. Bush are really funny!"  LOL

Here is my son in front of a piece of the Berlin Wall.

Here he is in front of the same wall, but on the "free" side.

This was a picture of a Bible verse that was on the wall.

My daughter posing with one of the soliders in the section about Operation Desert Storm.

Just for fun! A baseball game with the President and First Lady.

It was a great "school" day!  I would rather have fun learning together seeing real pieces of History than sit in a classroom any day!

Unpacking

May2

Last Summer when we were in California visiting friends I noticed a couple of our friends with little kids had placed dishes down low where the kids could reach them.  They both had new houses that had these cool pull out shelves in the lower cabinets.  Ever since I have wanted to get some dishes down low where my 2 Littles can reach them.  I can’t tell you how many times I have had to stop what I am doing just to go had someone a plate!  LOL

Here is the conversation:

LITTLE- "Mom, can you get me a plate?"

ME – Did you check the dishwasher?" (Hoping there was something clean they could reach. LOL)

LITTLE – "There’s not plate in here.  I need you to get me one."

ME – "grumble, grumble, grumble…" As I stop what I am doing and go to get a plate!

My last house was heavy in upper cabinets and short on lower cabinets.  So I never found a place to put plates down low.  But this house is just the opposite!  YAY!!!

Look how my life has improved!  LOL

The Littles are thrilled.  They are both quite independent and would rather just get a snack or drink themselves.  Plus they are impatient and want things NOW!  (I wonder where these traits come from? LOL)  So here is one improvement over the last house.

Now, I figure a lot of you are wondering what we are doing for school right now.  Much can be clarified by showing you a picture of our schoolroom…
Any more questions?  LOL  The Master Bedroom looks about like this too.  It is nerve-wracking to sleep in there!

Thankfully my 13 year old is happy and learning as long as he has a computer…
It may be messy, but trust me it is CLEANER than the room he left behind.  I am still having nightmares about what we found under this child’s bed!  GROSS!!

The Littles have spent a fair amount of time on Mom’s laptop in the kitchen.
I am LOVING having a little office in the kitchen.  I can see the family room and I am right next to the (future) schoolroom.  The washer and dryer are right behind me.  It is great!  This area still needs to be organized.  All the cupboards are empty and the counter is full!  LOL  But at least I can more around I don’t have to step over boxes!  The Littles have been spending a lot of time on starfall.com and Webkinz. For right now I am calling that school!  My daughter is really in to teaching her little brother things.  So hopefully she is reviewing and he is learning. (Oh, and my daughter follows me around the house reading to me.)

This is the best looking room of the house!  Obviously I have spent the most time in this room!
The Kitchen and the Littles bedroom were my first priorities.  Their room is coming together pretty well.  I still need to hang things on the wall.  We may need some more shelves for toys too.  We had 2 small playrooms in the old house and even though I got rid of a LOT of toys we STILL have too many!

So there is a look into the MESS that is Jamin’s life!  Hopefully over the weekend my husband and I can get things a little more livable around here!

Exploring – Nature Journals

April30

The kids and I went out and explored 2 local parks today.  Having been in the desert for 4 years we are thrilled to be surrounded by trees, prairies, creeks and lakes.  Everything is SO green!!!!

The first park we went to is actually a nature preserve owned by the public school district here.  (We didn’t know that until they ran us off because we had our dog with us and they don’t allow dogs there when the field trips are going on. LOL)  We had fun hiking on the trails and trying to figure out which of the plants were poison ivy.

The second park was more of a regular park.  It had a play structure and picnic tables.  But, it is also along a creek with lots of trees (And pollen, my allergies are all flared up!) and a path where you can hike and enjoy all the beauty.

This has gotten me thinking that we need to start keeping nature journals.  I have been intrigued with this idea for awhile.  Jimmie over at One Child Policy Homeschool has been writing a lot about the nature journals she and her daughter have been keeping in China.  It is so fun to look at the pictures they have drawn and compare them to the pictures Jimmie has taken.

So I guess I need to buy each of us a notebook and keep them in the car.  I ran the idea past the kids and they all thought it sounded like a lot of fun.  Hopefully someday soon I will be posting wonderful nature drawings done by my kids.  (Mine will not be recognizable.  Can you draw a stick figure beetle or leaf???  LOL)

Okay, I am off to search for my homeopathy remedies and find some Histaminum!

The Move Is On!

April8

Today it begins!  I feel like I am standing at the bottom of the last mountain between having my family all under one roof again!  The kids and I have been at their Aunt and Uncles for a week now.  Today I am leaving to head back to our new home and pick up my husband.  Then we will drive the 1200 plus miles to our old home to pack up the house and a truck.  Then we drive back 1200 plus miles to meet the truck and unpack.  As soon as I drop off my husband to unpack the truck, I will head back to get the kids.  (Another 500 miles round trip!)  All together we will be driving nearly 4000 miles in the next 10 days!  Not to mention all the packing and loading.  It is going to be GREAT fun!  LOL

Please pray for us.  Pray for my kids to have good attitudes and do well while we are apart.  Pray for my husband and I to have a safe journey.  Pray for us to be able to get this HUGE mountain of packing and loading done. (And to purge, purge, purge!  LOL)  Pray for my sister-in-law who is pregnant and will be taking care of all the kids!  (6 in total, 3 hers and 3 mine.  5 of who are 7 and under!)  Pray for me since this is the first time I have been away from my babies!

This will be the first time my husband and I have been without kids in 13 years!  We will have over 36 hours alone together in the car!  Our 19th Wedding Anniversary will be while we are doing this crazy move!  What a way to celebrate 19 years together!  LOL  (Next year let’s go to Hawaii instead honey!)

I can’t wait for it all to be over!  I can’t wait until the day we look back on all this and laugh.  But, for now it is time to start climbing the last mountain!

Here are some cute pictures of the kids with their cousins.

Cousins and Catepillars!

They don’t have these in the desert!

Yes, they colored themselves with markers! (They were suppose to be okay for skin, but they do not wash of easily!)

Sleep tight!  My 4 year old looks just like his cousins.  (He is the one in the middle.) It is so cute to see all the boys all together.

This is the baby (2 years) and he is adorable!  (Don’t tell his Mom but I am planning on taking him home with me when I come back! LOL)
(There is one of those Toile pillows that got me started with my Toile addiction!  LOL)

Cousin dogs?  My daughter never met a dog she didn’t like!  LOL Here she is loving on her cousins dogs.

I’ll see you all at the end of the month!

Bury Your Cows?

April3

The kids and I are on the move again!  We are almost to the point of heading back "home" to pack up all our worldly belongings to move to our new humble abode.  Part of this process involves taking the kids to stay with their Aunt and Uncle for a couple weeks while Dad and I go work ourselves to death moving everything!  LOL

So what on earth does this have to do with burying cows? (My Mom and sister are totally smiling right now because they know!) When I was a kid growing up in Kansas we use to play this travel game.  You see in the middle section of the United States you see a lot of 2 things while you are driving.  Cows and graveyards!  So our family travel game was called "Bury Your Cows".  What we did is anytime you passed cows that are on your side of the street you count them and add them all together.  Both sides count and add frantically!  LOL  BUT, when you pass a graveyard on your side of the street you have to bury your cows and start over!  The  "object" of the game is to be the one who has the most cows when you arrive at your destination.

Since I have lived on the West Coast for the last 20 years (Where you don’t see many cows or graveyards for some reason.) I had practically forgotten about this game.  But, since we have been spending a lot of time in the car lately the game has re-emerged!  The kids LOVE it!  We have been playing in teams.  Whoever in on the drivers side is one team and the passengers side is another.  One person is the cow spotter. (Like the driver who has a hard time counting and driving!) The other person is the cow counter.  There is lots of counting and adding in your head for this game!  hehehe

It has been fun to re-live a little of my childhood with my kids!  (My sister and I spent many a happy hour counting and burying cows.) They are totally amazed that this is what we did to entertain ourselves back in the dark ages!  So, when they get tired of watching DVD’s, listening to books-on-tape, listening to MP3′s, playing Leapsters and Gameboys we carry on with our game of "Bury Your Cows!"  LOL

P.S. Please pray for my children who will be away from Mom for the 1st time ever!  Also please pray for my sweet sister-in-law who will be taking care of 6 kids (my 3 and her 3.) 5 of which are 7 and under!  (And did I mention she is pregnant?!?!)  Lastly, feel free to pray for a successful move and for ME to do okay being away from my "babies" for the first time ever!

The Frugal Gourmet on Our Immigrant Ancestors

April1

As you can probably imagine find books on Armenia is not very easy.  Thankfully with the internet and wonderful websites like armeniapedia.com it wasn’t too hard for my son to do his Armenia Lapbook.  I still like the idea of him getting some of the information from books though.  So the other night I noticed that our friends we are staying with had the book The Frugal Gourmet on Our Immigrant Ancestors mixed in with their cookbooks.  Low and behold the very first chapter is on Armenia!.

I thought I would pass this information along because while most of you are probably not looking for information on Armenia this book covers A LOT of other immigrant groups.  (Thirty six in all!)

Each chapter has a brief history of the people and what brought them to America.  Then there are 5 or 6 recipes from each Country.  There are also great explanations of cooking technics and suggestions for substitutions for hard to get items.

I had my son read the chapter on Armenia and pick a recipe to copy and add to his lapbook.  (We had left this section blank because all of Grandma’s recipes are at home and I thought he could add one of those later.)  He chose to add the recipe for Lavosh, which is Armenian Cracker Bread.  This is an Armenian treat my kids are very familiar with because we all love it and eat it all the time!  We have never made it ourselves though, but we will have to try it after we get settled in our new house.

Here is the recipe for Lavosh:

Ingredients:

1 1/3 cups tepid water(barely warm, about 105 degrees)
1/4 cup olive oil
3 tablespoons sugar
1 pkg. quick-rising yeast
2 teaspoons salt
4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup milk for topping
Sesame seeds for topping

Directions:

Place the tepid water in your electric mixing bowl and add the olive oil, sugar, and yeast. Using the batter blade let the electric mixer blend these very well. It will take about 5 minutes on low speed. Stir in the salt. Gradually add 2 cups of the flour and beat on low speed until a thick and smooth batter forms. Change the blade to a bread dough hook and knead in the additional 2 cups flour. If you do not have a heavy mixer such as a KitchenAid, incorporate the flour witha wooden spoon and finish the kneading by hand. Kneading should take about 10 minutes in the machine, 20 minutes by hand. Place the dough on a plastic countertop and cover with a large stainless-steel bowl. Allow the dough to rise until double in bulk, about 1 1/2 hours. Punch the dough down and divide into 8 pieces. Let stand, covered, 15 minutes. Roll out each piece of dough into a 12-inch diameter circle. Working with 2 pieces of dough at a time, arrange breads on ungreased baking sheets. Brush with milk and sprinkle sesame seeds over tops. Prick with a fork many times, all over. Bake on the lowest racks in the oven, at 375 degrees, for 8 to 10 minutes, or until light brown. Rotate the pans in the oven from top to bottom, to insure even browning. Serve dry or wet. (To wet, hold the cracker under running water until lightly moistened all over, and then wrap in a moist towel for 10 to 15 minutes.) If the cracker is too dry to roll, it will crack. Sprinkle with a little more water and let stand a few minutes. If it is too wet, cover with a dry towel and let it stand.

Makes 8 Cracker Breads.

YUMMY!!!!!

I was thinking this book would make a excellent addition to a study of the United States.  I don’t think I have ever come across a study of the American Immigrant before.  Since most all of us fit in that category somewhere wouldn’t it make an interesting study.  I feel a lapbook coming on!  LOL

The Wonderful Story of Easter

March31

My 13 year old hates doing anything related to handwriting.  It is almost like it causes him physical pain to hold a pencil in his hand and apply it to paper.  (He never liked to color either.) Through the years we have tried an array of things to make handwriting easier for him.  I finally have resolved that it just isn’t his thing!  Thankfully, he LOVES the creative process of writing.  He likes typing on the computer so I now just let him do most of his writing on the computer.  (Except lapbooks.  He somehow doesn’t mind the handwriting part as much in lapbooks because they are small amounts of writing at a time.)

HOWEVER…Every once in awhile I come across a handwriting project I really want him to do.  When someone sent me the link to The Wonderful Story of Easter project a few weeks ago.  I REALLY wanted my son to do it.  I haven’t asked him to do any handwriting projects for awhile, so he reluctantly agreed.

HERE is the end result of this project:

With one of the booklets opened.

It may not look like a lot of handwriting, but this was a HUGE project for my son.  He labored over it for the better part of two weeks!  (That is why it was not done in time for Easter.)  But, he stuck with it and finished it!  I am estimating he spent about 6 to 8 hours doing the actual handwriting.  I know it sounds ridiculous, but it is SO hard for him!  I am proud of him for sticking it out.  I LOVE the finished project and will be putting it in our family Scrapbook to keep it safe and sound.

Here is what he wrote inside: (He paraphrased it from the Bible.)

The Last Supper:
During Passover Jesus and the Disciples ate together.  Jesus said to them during dinner. "I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me." They were very sad and began to say to one another "Surely not I Lord?" Jesus replied "The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl will betray me."  Then Judas said "Surely not I Rabbi?" and Jesus said "Yes, it is you." Then Jesus broke the bread and said "This is my body."  Then he took the cup and gave thanks, and offered it to them.  "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sin."

Gethsemane
Jesus went after dinner to the Mount of Olives , and said to his disciples "Pray that you will not fall into temptation."  Then he went and prayed.  "Father, if  you willing take this cup from me.Not my will, but yours be done."  An angel came and strengthened Him.  And being in anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. When he returned the disciples were asleep.  "Why are you sleeping?" he asked.  "Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation." Then Judas came and kissed Jesus,  and Jesus was arrested  and they took him away.

Crucifixion
A large number of people followed him including women who mourned and wailed for him.  Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed.  When they came to the place called Skull, there they crucified him, along with the criminals – one on his right and the other on his left. Jesus said "Father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing.  The soldiers also mocked him. They offered him vinegar to drink, and said "If you are the King ot the Jews then save yourself!" There was a written notice above him that read "This is the King of the Jews."  One of the criminals hurled insults at him, "Are you not the Christ?  Sav yourself and us!"  The other said "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."  Jesus replied "I tell you he truth today you will be with me in paradise."  Then Jesus cried out in a loud voice "Father into your hands I commit my spirit."  Then he breathed his last.

Resurrection
Three days later, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.  So she ran to Simon Peter and said "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb and we don’t know where they have taken him!"  So they went to the tomb and found it empty except for the cloth he had been buried in.  The disciples went, but Mary stayed.  Two angels came and Mary saw Jesus, but she did not recognize him.  He asked her "Woman, why is it you are crying?  Who are you looking for?"  She thought he was a gardener and asked "If you have taken him, tell me where you have put him, so I may go get him." Then he said "Mary" and she replied "Teacher!" and he said "Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father.  Go instead to my brothers and tell them I am returning to my Father and their Father." And she went to the disciples and told them "I have seen the Lord!"

HWTB – 3-28-08 – Free Printable Bible Lessons

March28

WOW!  Every once in awhile I come across a website and I think "Is this really all free?"  This is one of those sites!  Edgezonegames.com offers 325 Bible Lessons and Activities!  The information is sorted by Old and New Testament and then is in order by books of the Bible.  I was looking for lessons on Esther and they were so easy to find because all I had to do is go to where the book of Esther is in the Bible and voila! From Genesis through Revelations all the major stories of the Bible are represented here!

For each of the Bible stories there is a free pdf.  The pdf has coloring sheets, worksheets, crosswords, mazes, word searches, and MORE!  These are great to make a whole lesson around, or you could use them for filler work while you are splitting your time between children.  I can also see myself printing and using these in Awana, Sunday School and Bible Studies I teach in the future.

I hope you enjoy them as much as I am!  HERE is the link.

Happy Homeschooling,
