In the midst of all the uproar in homeschool circles over the Subway contest, HSLDA chipped in with this Open Letter to Subway. This post is my "democratic response":
Re: Mr. Smith's Open Letter to Subway
As attorneys, HSLDA should appreciate that the objectionable clause in the rules of the Subway contest is simply the last line of a boilerplate disclaimer. Even as non-lawyers, it seemed clear to my wife and me that the purpose of this was indicate that this program is directed at schools and that Subway does not wish to donate a $5000 athletic set to a single homeschool family. Surely Subway is not out of line in making such a restriction. Perhaps Subway could have included more elaborate rules that anticipated HSLDA's suggestion, but this is a contest for schools, and my family as homeschoolers does not feel any more excluded than anything else that transpires in the schools.
Other groups such as AFA have called for a boycott of Subway. Surely HSLDA would agree that this would be very inappropriate. Such predictable overreactions have impressed the American public with the perception that Christians are nothing more than knee-jerk cranks. Rather than getting all inflamed, homeschoolers should use this opportunity to inform the public as to homeschooling as a viable educational alternative.
Best wishes, Jay Ryan, Cleveland, Ohio
In the unlikely event this blog still has any readers, here's a vid of our angelfish tank. It just doesn't get any more exciting than this around here!
In Spring, 2006 we got the two silver angels (Michael and Jerry) and the gold angel (Gabriel). These guys are tough -- they survived a bad parasite when they were little. The other two zebra angels (Seraph and Cherub) were added in Spring, 2007.

These books are just sitting in piles in our basement since the homeschool curriculum season has passed unsuccessfully. Please consider helping our family through tight financial times by ordering a copy. A lot of people have said nice things about the curriculum. Your family will learn some things you've always wondered about. Thanks for your support.
