Memorial Day

Posted in Home Life

Memorial Day
Memorial Day is always a special time for those of us who live in Gills Rock because we have an annual fish boil which signals the start of the summer season, which is then closed by the annual Labor Day fish boil.  Fish boil may sound strange to most of you, but it is traditional food for fishermen and locals here in Door County, and is the highlight of many of the million tourists that  visit Door County each year.
It has been told that fishermen of old brought a kettle, some salt, potatoes and onions with them on the boats when they fished.  When lunch time came they would take a fresh fish and chunk it, add the potatoes and onions and boil it until they were all done, that would be called fish boil a la boat!
Today we use large kettles over open fires to make this delicious Scandinavian treat.  Add a little melted butter and then all the delicious side dishes brought by all the locals in northern potluck fashion and you have the makings of a fine meal.  The fishboil is prepared by the fishermen down at the sheds with over 150 attending.  We sit and visit and see folks who are just arriving for their summer stay, exclaim over how the children are all growing and which of our elderly looks more frail than when they left last fall.  It is a rite of spring, a calling together of precious friends and neighbors to celebrate community, it is one of our claims to being a "Gills Rocker".
After we left the fish sheds I went to work on cleaning a rental.  When I returned home I found our friend Neil, another commercial fisherman, another friend who was up for the weekend was also visiting with my husband, and another friend, Kari and her daughter had just arrived for a visit.  And my husband thinks I am the social one!!  Kari had brought over a clothing magazine with some ideas for dresses for me to wear for the wedding.  We had a wonderful time looking at the pictures and figuring out which ones to order.  I ordered a few and will return what does not work.  This may sound innefficient to some, but because we live 100 miles from a mall with only very expensive clothing stores locally  (which cater to wealthy tourists). I have found online shopping to be the way to go.
Annie and I had horse lessons that afternoon.  Annie did so well and it was helpful to me to watch AnnieO, our trainer, teaching Annie while I watched.  AnnieO taught while on Peaches, my horse, to get a feel for how trained Peaches is.  I did ground work with Peaches.  It was hard for me as there was so much to think about.  I am not afraid of Peaches in any way, but I am so new to this and poor Peaches was often wondering what I was trying to communicate with her!  Overall it went well.  Even Rick came out to watch what was being done.  It was a beautiful day, the sun was warm, the fun and fellowship had been good.
It was late when we finally had supper, then we relaxed together before bed.
Wonderful Day!

It is amazing how many things we have in common. Now, I read that your taking lessons at the same time with your daughter, from a professional trainer. I think this is uncanny.
Your horses are very pretty! Peaches is so pretty!

Now, I thought Door County was in Wisconsin, which I'm sure it is...but I didn't know that there was a Door County in Michigan, too!
