The season has begun!

Posted in Kitchen Life

Ever since my husband and I were newlyweds we have canned a part of our years food supply.  The first thing we ever canned together was grape juice and jelly.  My mother canned from her garden and Rick's mother did some so this seemed a natural pattern to follow in our family.  I have experimented with many different recipes and have had some great batches and some total disasters!
The season usually starts with strawberry jam, but this year they did not last long due to the lack if rain, and I was very busy at the time with our cleaning jobs so there will only be left overs from last year.  And the good news is; we will all LIVE!  This is the most common saying at our home!  So, the first canning done this year was raspberry jam from organic raspberries that our friends grow.
Then, a week ago we headed out into the orchard to pick cherries and can sauce.  This is one of my husband's favorites.  We did 35 quarts, but I may go pick a few more cherries and can some more.
From now until the first of Nov. there will be a stash of canning supplies at the end of our kitchen island for those days when the garden is full and needing to be put up for our winter use.
Canning pleases my husband so much, and it satisfies me in a very strong way to know that I am taking healthy, organic food and meeting the health needs of our family.  It is a delight to work in the ground with my children, planting, weeding, caring for these plants and then seeing their joy as they spy the first radish, or bean, or pepper.  The garden brings a cycle to our lives, a pattern for each year.  I cannot imagine a year without a garden and all that it brings to our lives.

Aug. 4, 2007 - gardening - a must!

Posted by SweetPrincess

just found your blog this morning and felt a connection with most of your posts - the words about gardening felt like they came straight from my heart.

we love our garden and have enlarged it each season we've been on our little piece of land God has given us - I find weeding relaxing and LOVE it that my kids get so excited about planting, watching the seedlings turn into productive plants and vines, then harvest time.

blessings on your day!
