Breakfast at the beach, extended Lord's Day

Posted in Learning Life

I really believe in the principal of the Sabbath, a Lord's Day, given to us, for us, and a sign of our obedience to God.  The hard part for me is that I have been in ministry since I was 18 years old as a full time volunteer pianist and now worship leader.  There are times when it has been stressful, like the first few weeks after a new baby is born and working out the nursing plans etc..  But, I can clearly say that God is faithful to sustain us, AND our families if we are being obedient to Him in what he asks of us.  He has asked our family to be faithful in ministering to the body of Christ here in our church.  So how does that work and yet keep the Lord's Day different?  Well, we celebrate Sunday, the Lord's Day, with a big breakfast, eggs, bacon, toast,  treats, sometimes hash browns, juice in fancy glasses etc..  This is usually the only breakfast we have with our Dad as he is a commercial fisherman and out the door at 5:45 each day.  We do have to be to church early for sound checks and practices so it is a full morning, and we have an evening service as well. I try to have a meal made or ready to go on the grill and we often have friends over to share a meal. This is Rick's only day off so he enjoys watching sports and the girls and I often go hiking or swimming or go to the park and gather with friends.  I always try and take a nap for an hour as the Lord showed me a few years ago that I needed this.  But, it is a full day. WE have a sweet evening service and sometimes we gather with friends after to fellowship together, remember, we really live in community here .   So,  in the summer when we are at our families full work level we extend our Lord's Day to Monday as well and we call it "breakfast at the beach."
We get up and pack a cooler with milk and coffee and fruit etc..  We then stop and get some delicious pecan rolls from a bakery and then head out to Sand Bay, our favorite beach.  The beach faces east so the sun shines on us as we sit under a tree and have our breakfast.  We pray and read and talk, talk talk.  We swim and the girls play on the beach or the swings.  I sometimes bring some homeschool books along to do planning and the girls give me their input on the coming school year.  It is the most peaceful time of my whole week. Sometimes we have a few friends with and they always comment on how special this time is to them as well.   We usually leave around 11:30, refreshed and ready for the week.  I am so thankful for this time with my girls and God and His creation.  Breakfast at the beach anyone??

Aug. 4, 2007 - the Lord's Day should be His all day

Posted by teachermom2boys

I agree that sometimes the Lord's day has to be extended over to Monday. I am a pastors wife and Mondays are the days, I find it hardest to get up. I wish more people would realize how important the Lord's day and maybe our country would turn back to the Lord and not have to be so busy for the things of Him. Yes it is hard sometimes, but if we honour Him, He promises to honour us. Enjoyed your post.

What a neat time with your children! For me it's doing good if I can just get outside once a day with them. I have a long way to go, but God is working on me.

What a great post. You describe your Mondays at the beach so beautifully.

I sure know what you mean by Sundays being draining. Even with church "at home", since I host this, there's a lot to do on this day.

This is why I strive to set apart Friday night to Saturday night (the Hebrew Sabbath) for "rest" time.
It's a new development in our life (just about a year ago we started doing this). It's an amazing thing. Where I never had enough time to do everything, I find now that I have abundant time. I am sure that this "time miracle" is similar to the widow with the few coins, or the loaves of bread and fishes.

I LOVE your new blog!!! It's so bright and sunny!!!! And it's easier to leave comments, too.

We would love to join you. It looks so fun & inviting! I grew up in a home where we always rested on Sunday - very little except meals were done, no sewing, no nothing. Now, like Antoinette, I am trying to incorporate the Hebrew Sabbath into our lifestyle, but old habits/schedules are hard to change, but I keep trying. It's also a bit more difficult when your partner didn't grow up that way. :)
