Wahington Island Day

Posted in Home Life

Another one of our important traditions is going over to Washington Island for the day.  The Island is actually just like where we live accept that it is more Scandinavian rooted.  It is also much more relaxed and by this time of the summer it is just what I need.  Here is how the day goes:
First, we get up early, I had laundry to get on the line and supper to start before we left so I hustled.  I also made cherry scones to take along for breakfast on the ferry and a thermos of coffee.  We picked up our friend Ally ( we usually have more friends) and headed to the ferry.  We boarded and then went up to the cabin and had our breakfast, very good!
The first things we do when we get to the island is to a replica church of a Norwegian wooden church.  We have started the tradition of having our morning devotions there at the start of our day.  The girls all recite or read scripture, the Bible is a Jerusalem Bible with some very different books included!  We sing a few songs and then pray. The acoustics are very good in this little building. It was a sweet time as always.
Then, we hit a few favorite shops, museums, and art studios where we buy a fe things, learn a few things, and choose items to work on in our school year craft time.  I always buy a Scandinavian plate and book to add to my collection.
Lunch is always at the Albatross, good food and an old fashion juke-box.
We went to schoolhouse beach and swam and read books and relaxed in the sun for the afternoon.  I went in and swam for awhile as well.  The beach is one of only a few in the world with rocks that are almost all round and very smooth.  It looks nice but is a killer on the feet!
We decided to head home and so drove over to get on the ferry and I ran into the little Scandinavian shop and bought some napkins that she carries which I will use for a special coffee time with my friends.
We boarded the ferry and had a relaxing time getting back to the mainland.  I enjoy this time so much with my girls and their friends.
