Canning

Posted in Home Life

This has not been the most productive canning season for our home, in fact it might qualify as one of the worst!  The drought we had this summer stifled most of the plant production, even tho I watered.  Amazingly, we had an adequate amount of tomatoes and the green peppers have been huge!  Strangely enough, I had three hot pepper varieties and they did not produce a single pepper.
Here we are canning apricots a few weeks ago.  We enjoy the apricots right out of the jar as sauce, or as the fruit in a smoothy.
I have not seen any lugs of peaches for sale.  I only get to our larger grocery stores about once or twice a month, so I may have missed them.  I do know that the stores say they are not selling large amounts of fruit because so few people can any more.  Well, I do  :)   I am hoping to go to Sturgeon Bay in the next couple days and will check for peaches then.  It is sad to not have some delicious home canned peaches in my pantry.
I could be able to get another batch of marinara sauce made and then it will be time to clean the garden out and turn it over for winter.  We are due for our first hard freeze any day so it is time to finish harvesting for this season.  We will pick about 5 bushels of apples soon and make applesauce in a few weeks after they have sat and sweetened up.
