Plague: L. plaga, a blow....... 1. That which smites or troubles, any afflictive evil, scourge, infestation 2. contagious disease or pestilence........... That sums it up well.... Last weekend I took our youth group girls up to the north woods of Upper country..... the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for you non-midwestern folks. We had a wonderful time until Saturday night we huddled around the computer checking weather reports that told of a huge storm coming in. Yes, we knew there was a chance but just the day before the 12 inches of reported snow turned out to be a dusting! As other churches with brave men drivers headed out early, we remained with two other groups to weather out the storm at the camp. It was actually a God-thing. The other two groups had the neatest Christian teenage men with them. That is a rare sighting for our church girls as we have very few young men who are committed to the Lord and living godly lives. These guys were so much fun and the group meshed well from the start. We played broom-ball, went sledding, card games, Mafia, spoons, sang worship songs with a guitar and worked together cleaning parts of the camp and doing meals. It was so much fun to fellowship together with precious brothers and sisters. We all were moved to a retreat center where we talked and drank tea into the night. Monday we got the clear to go as long as we drove slowly and we did! Forty-five miles per hour for three hours straight in a church van! At Green Bay we were able to make better time and arrived home after 6.5 hours of driving. I felt tired when I finally sat down at home. It was a couple hours later that I knew something was not right, I had spiked a fever and was coughing and although I was laying under 4 quilts I could not get warm. On Tuesday I woke to a higher fever and by noon my sweet husband had ordered me to the doctor and for once I did not argue. I do not rush to the doctor ever! I was found to have Influenza. I was so sick and could not stay awake, but praise God because of getting to the doctor early I could be treated. The bad news......... We all are now being medicated for the Influenza. On Wed. night Annie and Brian came down with it and Kristi joined them in the morning. On Wed. night I had to head back to my bedroom to a reluctant husband........ (he did NOT want to get sick), as every couch in the house was taken. What is it about sickness that makes everyone head for the living room? The GOOD news: The only one really healthy still is Melody, for which I am grateful as I do not know how her asthma will act if she gets sick. While I was down on Mon. and Tues. the girls took great care of the house. Kristi made me the most delicious homemade chicken soup and the kitchen was cleaned! They even bathed the boys for their visit with their mother this week. They were quiet and kept the boys at one end of the house so I could sleep and did a good job taking care of their father. Melody took over the horse chores, braving -20 degree weather! She is such a hard worker. Even in the cold she has been outside working on her fort, maybe the cold temps have frozen the virus out of her body!!! It is such a joy to know that the girls are not only capable, but willing to bless our home with their skills. The bad news..... We have lost another week of school. Some lessons got done, but it is hard to run a house and do school and now the older girls do not feel well enough to get anything done. Yes the plague has hit........ neighbors are joking that they are avoiding even driving by our house in case they might catch it! Since it is epidemic in our county they are not safe! We will be safe to be around tonight and so we will celebrate Mandy's birthday with her. We will survive! ![]() |
