Oct. 9, 2007 Fields and Grasshoppers
| Yesterday we went out to my husbands old bosses house. My husband and his brother were working out behind the old pig farm cutting scrap metal. The buildings of the pig farm are old and very large. It used to house thousands of pigs at one time. It is surrounded by feilds. As we were walking along between the pig barns on concrete we spy a grasshopper. I point at it and ask Alissa what it is. "A grasshopper!" she yelled. She then told my husband and his brother what she had learned about grasshoppers, which was surprisingly a lot. She had remembered most of what we had read about them, and that they were insects. Hoorahh!! for homeschooling. |

I recently started to really get into the schooling with my 5 year old. I was surprised at how much she picks up and remembers. Thanks to my sister Ali for the idea, we started an insect binder. I printed out the History of Insects book from http://www.oldfashionededucation.com/ and put it in a binder. Everyday we learn about one insect, look it up on the internet so we can see real pictures of them. Then print a coloring page of it and let Alissa color it the way she saw the real one on the internet. She loves it! When we sit down to start school for the day she asks to learn a new insect first.
Thanks to my sister again Alissa figured out how to read. Ali, my sister, bought Alissa the first set of Bob Books. I have tried and tried to get Alissa to read but it just wouldnt click in her head about letter sounds making words. After we got home from Aunties house Alissa pulled out the first Bob Book "Mat" and went off by herself. 15 minutes later she came up to me and read the book to me. It was so exciting, I had to call Ali and my parents and tell them.
