Classical Music
We started the week with an overview of classical music from A Young Scholar’s Guide to the Composers. It’s always been interesting to me that people lump music of all eras and styles into a category they call “classical” when, really, the classical era lasted from about 1750 to 1820. Two of the ‘big name’ composers that we are most familiar with – Beethoven, Mozart – do represent the classical, but most of us seem quite happy to throw Bach, Handel, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky in there as well. Along with modern composers! I don’t pretend to understand that, and it seems like most people know that when we say “classical” music, we don’t necessarily mean just Classical era music, so… And anyway, is there a better term that covers it all?
We didn’t have anything specific to listen to this week, and the lesson only took one day, so we also did some reading from The World of Music by Nicola Barber and Mary Mure, and Usborne Introduction to Music by Eileen O’Brien.
Today is piano lesson day! That happens after lunch. If all goes according to plan.
