Our Family

This weeks post is all about homeschooling with Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)  As we are beginning to close out my Brandon’s junior year and look towards his last year as a homeschool student I have found myself remembering and reflecting our entire homeschool journey.  Time really does fly.  It seems like yesterday that he was running around the house in his barney outfits singing, "I love you, you love me, what a h-a-p-p-y family"  Little did I know when we began that I would have three (of four) sons who struggle with APD

I believe that all children are gifted.  Where my boys struggle to process auditorily they make up for with their artistic/relational skills.  My husband and I know that the Lord makes no mistakes and that He makes each of us perfectly in HIS image to complete a purpose that can only be fulfilled by “US”!  No one else can do what my boys have been put here to do.  No one else can do what you’ve been put here to do!  “O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord. You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand!”  Psalm 139:1-6  I don’t know about you, but I can pretty much relax when I see that I don’t have to know the answers, I just have to know the TEACHER!  The purpose of this post is to better explain APD and to tell you what I have found that works for my boys!

Auditory Processing Disorder simply means that a child struggles to process and organize information in the brain appropriately when taught auditorily.  However, most APD kids have an incredible visual learning capacity! Where Auditory learning coats information with teflon, Visual learning adds VELCRO

Through the years there are a handful of programs that have worked exceptionally well for my boys.  I will share my TOP Two!

Five In A Row Unit Study

Five In A Row Unit Study uses beautifully illustrated picture books to teach Applied Mathematics, Language Arts, Art, Science and History.  Because the pictures in the books added visual velcro my child went up 2.5 grade levels back in “2000”, in general information and did exceptionally well in language arts. It’s a wonderful program that not only worked academically but gave us some wonderful forever memories to hang onto and cherish all the days of my life. FIAR is great for general knowledge, but the following program is PERFECT for the basics.

Time4Learning

In “2007” I finally found the perfect math program for my APD boys. We began using a program called, Time4Learning. Because of the strong interactive graphics my boys were able to understand math concepts like never before.  The graphics added the visual velcro so that the information went where it was supposed to and stayed put!  They were able to build upon concepts.  Once again, year end testing went up like never before.  We had tried every math program known to man and though they might work in the beginning they always seemed to cause more confusion than mastery.  Time4Learning took math to a whole new level.  I just wish we had known about it from the very beginning.  As a matter of fact, there is a HUGE number of children who struggle to learn the traditional way making the move to this program and they are getting the same results I share about!  They even have a page specifically put together for CAPD child that shines light and information on the disorder itself.

Let me close with a personal story that I think will help anyone to understand what a child with Auditory Processing Goes through to learn. As I was preparing for a large homeschool conference back in January my computer began to act funny.  I had e-mails and details that needed to be taken care of and every time I would try to look up a document I would get a prompt that said, “File Not Found”. In my quiet time the Lord used this to show me what my boys have had to go through.  You see,  I knew that the information was in the computer, I remember putting it there.  But for the life of me I could not find it.

Do you have a child who learnings differently!  Embrace it, don’t fight it.  Your children are with their perfect teacher.  There is no one who loves them more than you.  Remember Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you,” (and your children) declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you  hope and a FUTURE!”

We too stuggle with some forms of learning and have yet to identify exactly what's going because generally we just muddle through and try different things. T4L has been great for us in this regard as well because it incorporates a couple of different ways.

Great post!

Mary that was such a wonderful post (and the gorgeous photos made it even more special!)

as you know my middle DD is a 'different' learner. (I'm going to have to do some more research on APD – that just might give me some clues as to what is happening with her.)

I love the example you gave about teflon vs velcro (and the 'file not found!" Too true!

Bless your beautiful family!
