Nov. 30, 2007 - Winter Warmth

Yesterday I felt like I was starting to come down with a cold. Boo. This morning I woke up with a slight sore throat. I did get to sleep in a little longer than normal because my dad and I skipped walking, so that was good. Yesterday morning by the end of our walk I was frozen cold despite our fast pace and my layered clothes. I’m trying not to hate winter weather right now. Is it wrong to hate something if it’s not sin? The Bible says to hate what God hates and love what He loves. What God hates is sin. What are your all’s opinions on this? Everybody has likes and dislikes, that’s what makes us unique, but hate? We’re supposed to be grateful people. The cold does make me appreciate summer more. I don’t know. Thoughts?

Keeping warm in the winter, now there’s a good topic. Today I’m wearing four layers of shirts … well, three plus a sweater. We usually keep our house between 66 and 68 degrees with the thermostat. Our fireplace insert is great because it blasts out hot air in the family room really well. Dad usually makes fires for us in the morning and at night.

The only problem is that the upstairs where my room is is usually the coldest part of the house. Lately I’ve been doing my writing downstairs by the fire in the morning. If I need to be in my room, sometimes I’ll wear a hat or the hood of my sweater and wrap my blanket around me. My big window just lets in so much cold air. Those of us who do not have as much, er, padding on us as others need to find ways to stay warm.

Speaking of blankets, one of the best Christmas presents my mom and dad ever gave me was a fleece throw from L.L. Bean. About maybe, I don’t know, five or six years ago, they gave each of my sisters and I a different colored blanket monogrammed with our names. They were the perfect size for wrapping up to sit on the couch and read or to keep warm with in the car on the way to church. I still use mine frequently and was oh so happy that I decided to bring it with me on our trip to Idaho. Getting out of the car at a rest stop when it’s 20 degrees outside is not my idea of fun. It was nice to be able to wrap up in my blanket to get warm again before the van’s heater kicked in.

So now tell me, how do you stay warm in the cold weather months?

I believe it is wrong to hate things. It's not wrong to dislike something. ALL people have faults and, instead of hating them, we should pray that those faults would improve, and ask God to help us with our own faults, we DO have faults!
I do the same thing in cold weather, I bundle up. I like cold weather best. I don't know why...

Congrats on the nominee!!! ^_^

Well, I find myself saying stuff like, "Oh, I hate that!' or just basicly throwing the word around like it was nothing. I never really stopped to think what of how strong the word is.

My Mom wears thick fleece pataloons! Yup! I like wearing my pj bottoms under my skirts. And I really like wearing hoodies. ^_^

That's so funny! I'm wrapped up in my fleece throw right now! I don't know what I'd do without that thing!

Have a blessed day,.

You're Welcome! When you said "Like rain: it comes with the cold weather, and we couldn't live without it!" I think you make a very valid point! Without water, we couldn't live, because most of our body is made up of water, and without cold weather, the birds wouldn't have a reason to migrate!

Hi Mandy,
That is so neat about your thanksgiving chain! I think we will have to start that. What an absolute treasure to be able to go back through the years to see what was written by loved one past and present :)

That's to bad that you are feeling a little under the weather. My youngest is really sick right now with an ear infection and it is just plain old no fun :( We have two woodstoves in our home that I try to keep running most of the time to keep the temperature around 72 but if we are away or late getting them started it gets so chilly and we bundle in sweaters and wool stockings :) I had to laugh at your entry about wearing a hat in your room. When I was growing up my room had no heater and only single pane windows so it was extremely cold at night and I would go to bed in long johns, a scarf and a hat on *grin* some nights it would be so cold outside that I would wake up to over an inch of solid ice on the INSIDE of my windows. LOL. I'm not kidding either! Do you have a feather blanket/duvet? Those are amazingly warm and I would recommend one to go with your comforters for a super toasty sleep :) Hope you feel better soon.
Blessings to you and your family,
Rosina

How do I stay warm? Ha, ha, I live in the desert! Just kidding -- I get cold sometimes here, too! :o) Drinking something hot always helps.

So you asked for thoughts on hate. I agree with you about the likes and dislikes. I think it's okay to dislike something, but not to hate it. Like you pointed out, God wants us to be thankful. Here the thing to hate is not cold. We seem to get a lot of wind here. I guess it's not as much as other places, but it blows so hard sometimes! I don't know if I actually hate it -- I don't think I do -- but it can be an annoyance and I'm guilty of complaining about it often! I'm planning on writing a post soon listing a few things I'm thankful for about the wind, or at least some things wind is useful for. That should help!

Hope you're having a great week!

Staying warm- I can sympathize. :-) One thing that do is wear slippers. Except when I go somewhere, I always have them on! Another thing our family does is sew lap-sized bags fill them with flaxseeds, sew up the end, and microwave them. (Its a good idea to actually use two bags so that the seeds don't slip out.) They feel really nice on your lap, or by your feet in bed!

I hope you're feeling better today. :)

Hmm. . .I don't know if I could say I hate winter. I can say I strongly (?) don't care for it. :-D

You were wearing four layers of shirts!?! Goodness! Wait! I thought it didn't get cold in California?

You have a fireplace? Oh, how wonderful! We use to have one, well, we still do, but since we're livin' in a rent house, we can't put it in the house. :( I love the smell of wood burning in a fireplace. To me, it kinda smells like beef jerky. :)

Yep! Tree decorating! I love it! It just gets a person in the mood! And Christmas shopping just adds to the fun of things. :) And, like you, I need to get my shopping done, too. We're going to town just for that. :)

I think this snowflake template is my favorite out of all the ones Sarah and I did for me. :) I'll probably keep it for January, too 'cuz it snows over here about that time. :)

Well, have a wonderfully blessed day!

lots of hugs,
Jordan Lee

P.S. Congrats on being nominated the "Best Encouager". :)

Oh, I know what you mean. My sister and I share the room over the garage so when it's hot outside our room is really hot, and when it's cold outside our room is freezing! At nighttime we have to get all bundled up in sweatshirts and blankets to stay warm during the night.

Congratulations on the Nominee by the way! You highly deserve it.

In Christ, Christine

Hey!

Aw, homemade Chinese is so yummy! :-)

Our house gets pretty chilly! We have a heater thing in the living room, (The previous owners bricked up the fireplace and put in this heater.... not the brightest move, in our opinion.), and we have heat and A/C. However, the entire second story is without any kind of heating or cooling. That's where all of the kids' bedrooms are. :-) It's really not bad at all, unless it one of those days when it's 10* outside. But, we spend most of our day downstairs, so it's no biggie.

So, needless to say, I bulk up with bunches of sweaters. :-) I have one of those blankets too! Ah! I love it.

Hugs,
Becca
