• Sep. 4, 2008 - Math - Measurement

Posted in MATH
We are having some lessons on measurement. Since we are plugging away with our home repairs and improvements I though practice with a ruler, measure tape, and triangle would be appropriate.

Luke helped measure many tiles to mark to fit the porch tile project. And Timmy did some workbook pages measuring in inches from point a - point b.

Mike had a great idea of having the boys help measure out wooden pieces to fit and make simple birdhouses. Then in the Spring they could try to sell them... I thought it was a neat and do able idea!

We have some progress to see here. It is easier for me to focus on literature and yes some times we don't practice in our workbooks.

We have however done some grocery store math and enjoyed a book that gave us some ideas in those adventures. The boys enjoy weighing things in the produce department so when we can afford a little extra time there we let them experiment with this.

Also we still bake pretty regularly and use simple math skills there. We enjoyed a baking kit from the library that had cutters in the shape of numbers. we'd like to play with that again.

We read books with math concepts in them like How many sharks in the bath tub?
 or Brindle Bear Telling Time.

Mia Math and Math Blaster and other software are used pretty regularly.

I still have to make an effort to show them how to read time and the calendar more fluently but they do understand -just not fluent. That goes for  phone number as well... it has changed again. So we must learn a new one. Mom and Dad have not memorized it yet after a few weeks!

Money has been more of interest. They know the names of each coin but now I am trying to instill the value of each coin so they can do more adding and subtracting with them.

They give a gold dollar at church attendance and think it is so pretty! And special to carry one in their own pocket. We are not big on money here like we don't give allowance or anything like that. So again I think I need to make special effort to remember this is important for them.
We tried some money making ventures but tapered down with the ideas wanting to wait until the kids get a bit older to help more- it was a lot of work for me. We made goals to use any earnings for needed items or services.
One thing we saved for this year was for the vet visit for our kitty. This was a great way of showing saving for something pretty important. If we didn't have enough money here by Spring for the vet we were gonna have to let kitty go to a new home. Saturday we take her to the vet!

It has been a struggle this past year or so -financially- so I know they understand that money is what we use to buy our basic needs with. And extras don't come often and are treats or gifts!
