Cool Summer Fun!

Greetings from Me and My House,

Are hot days keeping your children inside more than usual during mid-afternoons? Mine are always needing something constructive to do when they've gotten too hot and tired to play outside anymore - for a while. The key there is constructive!

We may not be like typical customers of "the Computer Lady" - let alone typical parents. Our children don't spend much time on the computer, and when they do I like it to be constructive - productive time, not just a time waster. Phyllis Wheeler's Let's Make a Web Page ebook for 8-12 year olds looked like it might be a good answer to both "something to do inside" and "constructive".

Phyllis has provided easy to understand, step by step instructions for young people to create a web page of their own using a free trial of drag and drop web creating software. She's included plenty of pictures to guide the students, and practice with several different features - more than they would use on a page, showing them how to add and delete various options, to get their page looking nice.

This isn't just "here's a picture, put it here", "here's some text, put it there" type of training. Phyllis has the children come up with their own content first. They are going to create something in context to their own lives That's a good point with me. I don't like teaching children out of context, just for the sake of doing something. It needs to relate to their lives.

She also shows them several ways to go about doing something, such as get a graphic or audio from the software itself, of your/their own from your computer files, or off the internet - showing them how to do safe searches for such things. The children should have a pretty good understanding of simple web design when they finish.

Our boys are reading through it now - a hot, mid-afternoon - and I think they will have fun putting their own web pages together. From reading through the instructions myself, I don't believe they'll have any trouble understanding and following them. It should keep them busy for several hours - spread over several days. And if they enjoy it, it may prove to come in handy on other hot or rainy or snowy days. Perhaps they'll REALLY like it, and then I can advance them to the web design software I use, and they can begin working on my pages for me. Wow! That'd be a great help!
