Whew!

We got through the first month here... it was tough.  I have discovered that my son really, really hates school work.  Sad.... I am working diligently with him to try to make him understand how important it is.  I have found that the Bible curriculum seems to interest him the most and I am pleased with that.  Hope all you homeschool Moms out there are having a great year.  Brenda

Looking good!

Well, today has been busy for me (I'm working), but wanted to post and say that Michael is doing well with his SOS curriculum.  He has actually worked ahead of his schedule and has done his first test and got a high B on it.  I'm pleased with it.  Its so much fun... I wish I were the student doing it.  In fact, I wish they would come up with a college curriculum that taught you in the same ways.

I am searching for another job... I have a few applications floating around.  I currently work in Emergency Nursing which I have done for many years, but am trying to find something that will allow me to be home weekends and therefore able to go to church and do things with Michael.  I'm tired of working weekends.  I even approached my current boss about doing Monday thru Friday work and she wouldn't even talk about it.  Enough said.  Time to move on.  Keep me in your prayers, everyone!  Love in Him, Brenda

September 5, 2006

We recently received the Switched on Schoolhouse software and began looking at it and setting up lessons.  It looks like its going to be a fun ride.  Michael has already started the lessons.  I set the curriculum up to start today, Sept 5, by the "traditional calendar" which says school starts the day after Labor Day.  Since we were late getting our curriculum, it makes Michael not be behind at all, but actually just starting.  His Dad is a lot relieved, I think.  Because public school started several weeks ago in our area, he felt Michael would be so far behind that he couldn't possibly catch up; but now, I think he sees that this is going to be good for Michael and good for me as a Mom.  I have long disliked public school and its policies toward Christianity and our beliefs and now that Michael is 12, I was beginning to be concerned about peer pressure and the things that he might be exposed to at the public school.  So... keep praying for us.  Brenda

August 11, 2006

Well, today has been somewhat interesting.  Actually, yesteray was even more so.  I took Michael over to the new public school that he has been assigned to.  He was assigned to a class with 28 other students.  If I wasn't convinced that home school would be better before then, I sure am now.  How is that poor teacher supposed to teach that many children and get them all on the same page?  I tried to explain this to my husband who is not very supportive of home schooling and he just shrugged.  I love the idea of teaching my child.  The more I pray in my heart about it, the more at peace I am with it.  Pray for us!

Anyone out there?

Hi.. I just started this blog a few days ago but would love to hear from someone else.  Is there anyone out there in my situation?  My husband is not a Christian and against the idea of home schooling... I really need some support here.

Is homeschooling for me?

Dear Homeschoolers,

I have been trying for months to get some information and can't seem to get anywhere.  I would really like to homeschool my 12 year old son, but we do have certain problems in my household.  Plus I need to know where to start.  I have visited tons of websites and read, read and read some more... but I need to know some basics.
#1  Do I have to notify the school board/state/county anyone that I will not be sending my son to public school?
#2  What about curriculum?  Where do I get it?  What are the best tools to keep track of grades?  What kinds of subjects are required ones?  Do I pay someone (a church) to keep track of all this for me?
Also, I work 3 12-hour shifts per week... on those days, can I set everything up and tell my son that he must complete this and this and this before I get home... he does tend to be mildly ADD.  He is somewhat immature for his age and my husband thinks he needs the socialization of public school.... what are your thoughts on this?
Help!
Thanks, Brenda (Michaels Mom)
