Googol Learning’s 2nd Annual Crazy 4 Math Contest Encourages Families to Practice Math Together During the Summer

The Crazy 4 Math Online Contest once again is receiving entries from all over the world, showing that mathematics, the universal language, is enjoyed by children everywhere. “Many of the entries we see this year are ideas that bring families closer together – playing games, measuring a garden, building a fort, baking cookies, selling at a yard sale, even hiking up a mountain,” says Susan Jarema, founder of Googol Learning. “It’s wonderful to see parents and children spending time together . . . and, of course, using math!”

Research indicates that children lose math skills over the summer. But, this does not need to be the case. Math skills can actually advance! Summer is the perfect time for children to experience "fun learning" again by exploring and developing new interests. It's also a chance for them to discover that learning happens all the time, not just in school. “Families can discover that math can be found everywhere,” says Jarema. “By looking for math in their daily lives and “talking” math, parents can ensure that their children will get the extra practice required to stay ahead.”

"There is no limit to the ways math can be used and the places it can be found," says sponsor David M. Schwartz, who, in addition to writing books, publishes the national monthly magazine column “Math Moments.” "The joy in math is seeing how we use it in  everyday life and to answer the fascinating, mind-boggling questions we  can ask just for fun. I am thrilled that this contest will encourage even more kids to wonder and to use math."

To enter the Crazy 4 Math Contest, children simply have to describe how they use math in an activity they enjoy. Entries must be submitted online by July 30th at www.crazy4math.com. The goal is to generate a free list of learning ideas for families and teachers to use. Great entries from last year include “Math on the Ranch 2x2=4H,” “Butter-Multiflies” and “Yardsale: Goals, Recycling, Fun.”
