Rest easy, sleep well my brothers. Know the line has held, your job is done. Rest easy, sleep well. Others have taken up where you fell, the line has held. Peace, peace, and farewell..
For those of us in the military family, these words strike a chord in our hearts. Especially when we apply it to the care of the children left behind by our fallen brothers in arms. KIA Kids takes this charge seriously and is doing something about it. I was moved by these words in particular and think you will be too:
Some gave all,
Now it's our job to look after the educational needs of the children left behind.
Origin of the Charity - Soon after the 2000th death as a result of military operations in the Middle East, members of AMVETS, The 82nd Airborne Division Association and The American Legion gathered to discuss what could be done next in our organizations to help and assist service members and their families. Because we all already support the United Service Organizations (USO) via donations of products and services, we wanted to find a need not yet fulfilled by our groups or any other non-profit group. We found such a need.
What Makes This Charity Different: While Veterans Administration (VA) Survivor Benefits help, they fall far short of the funds needed to provide for a quality education. We make up the difference. In the case of a spousal pregnancy at the time of death of the service member (such as Coast Guard Petty Officer Bruckenthal listed below), there are no survivor benefits available to the unborn child. In this case, this charity also pays the monthly allotment (while enrolled in a properly accredited institution) otherwise available by the VA had the child had been born at the time the service member deceased. Other charities do exist but they are "service" specific (we know of two). If you want to donate funds regardless of service affiliation, we are the only "All Armed Services" group that exist today that cares for the educational needs of all the children regardless of armed service component.
