Jul. 7, 2008 - King Tut/Ancient Egypt resources...
Anyone have any great books, websites, activities to teach preschoolers about King Tut/Ancient Egypt? I'm sure there is stuff out there, I've just not spent the time to look. I'm being lazy and asking a few friends first...lol
Aaron is currently obsessed with King Tut, so I thought it'd be good to find some info/activities for him. Okay, okay, obsessed is a little strong. He is quite interested though. He picked up one of our student atlases yesterday morning and it has a picture of King Tut's burial mask on the front. He brought it to Kev and said, "Look daddy that is little King Tut" and he keeps asking me to read about King Tut and isn't getting that the atlas isn't a book about King Tut.
**ETA: Somehow my comments got turned off??? Sorry to anyone that wanted to comment...Thanks for the emails, I'll check the links later...

Oct. 26, 2007 - We have a winner! (Two actually)
The Queen suggested "Out of this world" and Rivergallery "Outta Here" in the end he decided to use them both. He planned Out of this world for the blog name and Outta Here for his blog addy. Blogger said it was unavailable, so he went to plan B and combined the two for his blog name. Without further ado...
Rock's Outta This World Blog We tried several of the suggested names for the blogger addy and they weren't available...he ended up with www.mylifeasarock.blogspot.com so be sure and add it to your bloglines (or save in favorites) so you can check back and see what ponderings of the deep he shares.
Congratulations to the winners! Send me an email at kevinandkelly @ dol. net (no spaces) with your snail mail addy and whether you want a potholder or a drawing.

Oct. 12, 2007 - Blog contest
**sorry for the duplicate posting for those that read both blogs.**
Rocklin will be 7 soon and he's VERY excited to join the blogging world. One problem though. He CANNOT decide on a name for his blog. He's thought and thought and just can't come up with anything. So, tonight at dinner, he decided he'd like to have a contest. My children are currently "into" contests...they had a contest today to see who could build the silliest Mr. Potato head.
Here's how it works, I'll give you a few tidbits about him and then you think up a neato name and leave your ideas in the comment section. On October 26th, he will pick a name and set up his blog. To find out who win's you have to check here on October 26th for a link to his new blog. The winner will receive their choice of items made by Rocklin...winner can choose ONE of the following:
1. a woven potholder
2. a framed drawing
3. a surprise set of papercrafts that might include boats, airplanes, puppets, paperdolls, etc
Okay, now for some info that might be helpful to you...
Rocklin LOVES astronomy, astronauts, space shuttles etc.
He also really enjoys reptiles of all sorts, especially snakes.
His first real word was "football" and he's enjoyed sports ever since...especially soccer and tennis.
Rocklin loves music and art. He plans to learn to play piano, drums, guitar, violin and trumpet and he draws/paints constantly.
His blog will be about "all sorts of stuff. Space, reptiles, space, school, space, music, space, art, space and maybe some other stuff too"
So, help a fella out and give us some suggestions for his blog name!

Sep. 11, 2007 - False start...
After the last post, we decided to take a bit more time off before starting the school year. So, yesterday was the kickoff to the new year. I typed a looonnnnnggggg post with lots of pictures last night and lost it just before posting. So, I gave up and went to bed. I reposted part of it this morning on the other blog, so you can check it out there if you are interested...

Aug. 20, 2007 - It's official...
Magdalyn is in Kindergarten! We only did math, phonics, penpaling and read-a-loud for today...we'll begin other subjects next week. I had planned to jump in full blast, but for various reasons, it's going to work better for us to ease into things. (Sharon, don't faint when you see that my children are working on math...it was shortly after you left and I had to get them occupied with something, or else two of them were going to fall apart. Okay, who am I kidding, they did fall apart...but distraction worked to get them back together fairly quickly.)

Aug. 20, 2007 - First field trip of the year...
We officially kicked of the new school year...what better way to do it than with a field trip? Not just any fieldtrip, but a fieldtrip with special friends! The Tribe came for a visit this weekend and we decided to load everyone up and visit a local museum on Saturday.
This was painted to look like you were underground...above their heads you could see the bottom of the garden...carrots and turnips growing, the roots for other plants, etc.

Aug. 10, 2007 - My children are on an expedition...
I just overheard..."I know how to get to Madagascar from here". Now, I'm being told the whole adventure...
"We started in Canada and went to Florida by driving a buggy. It was pulled by a horse. She was too old for us to ride on her back and didn't like us on her back anyway. So, we were in the buggy and she pulled us. She's a grey horse. We were gonna take a ship from Florida to Africa, but a flood washed us into the ocean. It took us a year to get to Antarctica. The buggie sunk, but it had a basement. The basement was sort of like a submarine, so we stayed there. It had candy, icecream, and waffles and that's what helped us survive. There were 800 waffles and seventy hundred pieces of candy. Thirty hundred bags of icecream, two containers in each bag. We finally floated to Antarctica and then the horse pulled us as she swam to Madagascar. Now we are on our way to Africa. We are going to Africa because we need to take the icecream there. It has now taken us almost two years to get there. We are taking the icecream to all the people of Congo. We will just ride through the towns and toss icecream, just like they do with candy at parades. Then we'll go to Ethiopia and do the same thing with all the candy. We mostly ate the waffles on our trip, so we could have the icecream and candy for the people of Africa. We liked traveling this way, so we'll go home the same way probably. Or we might just get on a ship and sail home."
Jerald and Rocklin shared this story, each adding input to complete the adventure. Mag's contribution was making sure that i knew the horse was grey.

Jul. 12, 2007 - Overheard at the breakfast table...
Mag to Jay: "Thank-you Jay for making breakfast for us. You make the best pancakes in the world. Even if I don't like them, I thank you for them anyways." This is a HUGE compliment because pancakes are one of Mag's least favorite foods and she often will eat just the fruit and skip the pancakes altogether. So sweet, I LOVE it when my children appreciate and encourage each other without prompting. Jay will float all day on that comment!

Jul. 11, 2007 - A tag for Mag's baby doll...
Whenever we go out, the children all wear tags that have parents names, cell numbers and list of allergens. This is in case they get lost in a crowd (which we are fairly sure will not happen, but you just never know) it's also a good plan in case we are in a car accident and unable to communicate for whatever reasons. This morning, the children were pretending to be going to a carnival. I was given tickets to ride an eagle, a firetruck and several other neato contraptions/animals/vehicles. Jay decided that Mag's baby should have a tag in case she got lost, it reads...
My Mommy's name is:
Magdalyn R___
I am allergic to Feathers
so please don't give me a pet bird

Jul. 5, 2007 - Fourth of July accomplishments!
First off, I finished painting the walls in Mag's room...woo hoo! Still need to do the trim and various other little things, but the walls are done and very very pink
Secondly, those that read my blog last year may remember my sharing that Jerald has always struggled with enjoying fireworks. He has gone from huge meltdowns, to last year sitting in our friends van with his ears covered for half of the show. I am so pleased to report that this year he enjoyed them! He found a spot to sit and he watched the entire show without any indication that he was having a struggle. When it was finished he said "Mommy did you see that? I enjoyed the entire thing and I didn't cry or cover my ears or anything". This is a huge breakthrough for him and I am so thrilled!

Jun. 29, 2007 - Learning colors...
While I nursed Parker this morning, Aaron, Rock and Mag were playing with math manipulatives. I overheard Mag say that she was the teacher and was going to teach Aaron his colors. He started matching up the bears with the right color cup. Mag said "great job Aaron you are putting the red ones in the red cup and the blue ones in the blue cup". She began asking him what color he had each time as he put it into the cup. I kept hearing him say "balooloo". After several times, I thought for sure the blue ones were all in the cups by now, so I turned to look. He was matching them all up correctly, but every bear no matter it's true color was "balooloo".

Jun. 25, 2007 - Christmas letter, that has become the fourth of July letter...
I never got around to sending out our Christmas letter to most on the list. It was written in November, then we had issues getting the photo card done. Finally got the photos in January, but then I had to change some things in the letter because Parker had reached a few mile stones. Now here it is almost July and I still have them sitting here. A few went out, a few made it into envelopes, the rest aren't even printed out. I am finally admitting defeat this year and just posting it here for those that are interested. I'm determined next time around to have them in the mail before Thanksgiving! Keep in mind, it wasn't written recently...Parker is now 13 mos old and about ready to walk...also, the other children will all having birthdays in the next few months...
Hi there! Mom’s been a bit busy this year, so she needed someone else to write the annual letter. It seems that I am the only one with a bit of time on my hands, so the job fell to little ol’ me. I should start by way of introduction, since that birth announcement promised last Christmas was never sent out this summer. I am the newest, adorable little Rebel to join the crew. I was born May 21, 2006...just a few days before Momma turned 30! She says I’m the best birthday present ever. Way before I was born, the name game began. For the first time, mom and dad agreed pretty early on that I should be named after both Grandma’s. Since Debra Maureen is NOT a good name for a boy, they decided to go to maiden names for my moniker. The next stage in the game was deciding which name to put first. Mom voted for Abrams Parker, because she wanted to call me her Abie Baby(can you see me rolling my eyes?). Boy am I ever glad that daddy had the wisdom to veto that and name me Parker Abrams. Of course, there were a few scary days there after my birth, when a name change was considered. My siblings were really pushing to name me Henry, but in the end Parker won out. I am 9 months old now and growing like a weed they say, though I’m not at all sure what that means. I am just over 20 pounds, have 8 teeth and am crawling everywhere. I LOVE to watch my siblings as they play. When I’m in my exersaucer, Rocklin calls it my tug boat and pretends I’m going along on all of his pretend expeditions. Speaking of siblings, you probably wanna hear about them too, huh? Let’s see, I might as well start with the next one up, and that would be Aaron Lee, a.k.a Zigity or Zigity Zoo. Whatever his name is, he’s a very busy little dude! He’s apparently pretty popular too because I hear his name a lot…as in “Aaron Lee get out of the toilet” or “No, Aaron you cannot eat glue sticks”. He likes to hold me and doesn’t realize that I am nearly his size. Aaron thinks my eyes are neat and is always trying to grab them when I blink. He loves to play hide and seek and he’s great at sneaking outdoors. We just recently celebrated Aaron’s 2nd birthday and he was thrilled to get his own vacuum cleaner, it didn’t work to keep him away from mom’s though. Aaron loves to laugh and he loves to be loud…especially when he’s playing with matchbox cars or Mr. Potato head. Most recent development for Aaron is that he’s finally starting to talk a lot more. His current favorite thing to say is “cow” and he calls nearly everything a “Ca-oooowwww”. Next in line is my sweet sister Magdalyn. Mag is a wonderful big sister, she’s like a little mommy…always wiping my face and helping to change my clothes and she loves to help give me a bath. She just turned four and loves to tell people that she is almost five. Magdalyn most enjoys playing with her dolls and going shopping with mommy. Mag and Rock spend a lot of time together playing “astronaut” and she makes me laugh when she dresses up and pretends to be an astronaut or an explorer. Magdalyn is learning to write and enjoys “writing letters” to her friends. Rocklin has big news to share…he is reading! Last year, Rock became interested in Astronomy and this year that has grown into a LOVE for all things astronomy related. He especially is fascinated with space shuttles, astronauts and the planet Saturn. There are a couple of things that seem to be never far from Rocklin, a hat, a pen/pencil and paper. He might not like to be called doodlebug anymore, but he sure is always doodling something on paper. Rock just turned six and has begun losing some of his baby teeth. When I’m cranky at dinner time, Rock is the only one that can get me in a better mood. Mom puts me in my bouncy seat and he tickles me and plays with me and I just laugh and laugh. I have learned, Jerald is the guy to go to if I have a question. That boy reads and reads and reads and reads, I think he must know just about everything because he just reads so much. He especially likes to read books about birds, anything related to Antarctica and any foreign languages. Recently a missionary friend sent him a book to learn Chinese. He also discovered there is a similar book to learn Russian. Since Russia is his other fascination, he asked to purchase that book and has enjoyed it as well. Jerald loves to bake and cook and has recently become known around here as the “muffin man”. He makes muffins by himself (exept mom helps with the oven) often for breakfast. Whenever I need some cuddle time, I know Jay is the guy for me…he loves to hold me and sing to me and he does a pretty good job at calming me down. Jay is seven years old now and getting very tall, he is looking forward to being taller than mommy in a few years. Daddy is keeping very busy with work responsibilities. He is now in his second year of teaching and very much enjoys it. He is just about to the one year mark with his job at McFoy Refrigeration. This has been a challenging position and although the hours are sometimes hard, he enjoys doing commercial/industrial HVAC and we appreciate his hard work. On Sundays, we go to Faith Family Church, I don’t really know much about it, but I get passed around a lot. Daddy is the sound/music guy and I have fun watching him push buttons on his equipment and I ALWAYS jump when he starts the music. I am never quite ready for that! Turns out all of my siblings have MANY allergies to different foods as well as environmental things. This means that mom is having to cook nearly everything from scratch and without all the allergens. That has been a challenge, because there are so many foods to avoid. Did you know that corn is in just about EVERYTHING in some form? Of course, I haven’t started solid food yet, so I don’t even know what corn looks like. Mom spends a lot of time snuggling me in her lap or in the sling, while she reads or helps with math or supervises a messy paint project. She also enjoys passing me to dad so she can write on her blog without me kicking the keyboard. This fall, I spent a lot of time in the cold watching my oldest two brothers run around and chase a black and white ball. They call it soccer, but it just looked like exhaustion to me, in fact, I often fell asleep after just a few minutes of watching. Rocklin especially enjoyed it and is eager to play again. I heard mom referred to as “team mom” by Jerald’s coach, I’m not sure what that means, but it sure kept mom busy every Saturday. Before I go, here are just a few funnies from 2006. *Aaron calls himself “zoo” because mommy sings to him “Zigity zoo zoo zoo, what am I gonna do with you?” *Shortly after a discussion about how the Holy Spirit lives in us, Jerald got a case of the “itchies”. Magdalyn knew where the itchies were coming from-”it’s God making you itch. He lives in your body and he’s saying ‘tickle, tickle, tickle’ and itching you.” *One Saturday afternoon, daddy was doing some maintenance on our van. As he walked through the family room carrying a jug of windshield washer fluid, he heard Rocklin say “is that more horsepower to add to the van?” *Jerald’s definition of inertia - “If an object is moving, it will continue to move until something stops it. If an object is stopped, it will stay stopped until something makes it move. It’s sort of like a fox and a mouse. The mouse is run, run, running all over the place. He will keep moving until the fox comes and eats him. When the fox eats him, he stops moving. That’s inertia, the mouse is the object and he will keep moving until something, and that’s the fox, stops him.” *One day, while trying to get Aaron to say Mama, this was the conversation… Mommy: Aaron can you say mama? Aaron: yup Mommy: then say it, please Aaron: Nup (nope) Mommy: Come on, you can say my name. What’s my name? Aaron (with a mischievous grin): Keweee (Kelly) (he did finally say mama several weeks later. It was during the pediatrician visit when Mom was discussing her concern over the fact that he doesn’t talk. While the pediatrician was giving the reasons she wasn’t concerned and that mom shouldn’t be, he looked up and said “mama, mama, maaaamaaaaa” and then laughed hysterically. We are no longer concerned about his speech and he’s doing fine talking when he wants to talk.) *A confession from Maggie when I was about 4 months old: "I gave Parker chicken. I shouldn't be in trouble 'cause he liked it and he didn't choke" *A few days before I was born, mommy asked Rocklin if he wanted to cut my umbilical cord, he thought for a bit and then said "as long as daddy helps me, I think I'd like to do it. I don't want to have to do it myself though." Jay starts filling him in on how it happens..."midwife gives the scissors and then daddy puts his hand over yours to help. It sort of pinches a little when daddy squeezes your hand,but..." Rocklin cut him off at this point and said "WAIT just a minute! You use scissors to do this? I thought I had to use daddy's saw-zall, that's why I was afraid to do it by myself". Rocklin did a great job cutting my cord, WITHOUT the saw-zall ;-) *Jerald loves to bake with “all-porpoise flour” Love, Parker

Jun. 21, 2007 - With permission from the author...
here's Jay's poem
The Shed
So much like a house,
But the shed is something else.
It holds so many toys, and other things too.
Like a lawn mower and wheel chair lift too.
So many things
And so much to do.
The shed is a wonderful thing for me and you.

Jun. 18, 2007 - Something to say...
A certain friend often bugs, I mean encourages me to update my blogs regularly. Tonight was such a night and I told her I had nothing to say. This wonderful friend was quick to remind me that I ALWAYS have something to say. She's right, just ask my husband...of course he'd add that I not only have something to say, but I always get the last word too.
As I sat here pondering what to blog about, Jay came upstairs...he was being errand boy and so kindly brought me a snack and a drink...LOVE that boy! Anyways, he came up and handed me a poem he wrote today. It's a wonderful little poem...you can read by going to his blog which is here...www.littlerebels.blogspot.com. So, he brings me his poem and asked if I would please type each line onto it's own page in microsoft works. Then he mentions he doesn't want it printed out, to just save it for him until tomorrow. I asked what he planned to do with it and he casually said "oh nothin' much, I just want to make it into a book and I'm gonna draw illustrations on each page". After thinking for a minute, I said "Jay how are you going to draw pictures if I don't print it out for you?". He looked at me with *that* Jay look (those that know him know exactly the goofy grin I'm referring to) and said "I'm going to draw them right in microsoft works and then print it out and color them in". I mentioned that there was no way to draw in microsoft works, and Kev jumped in and said, "ah, but you can draw them in MS paint and then insert them into works". Again, Jay flashed that goofy Jay grin and said "that's too much work daddy. I can do it right in works, just like this". It took him about thirty seconds to teach us both how to do it. This boy is gonna come in handy around here yet! I think we should check into the rules and regs of having his start his own computer help business
I'm sure I could think of other things to say, but my snack awaits and a certain seven year old will expect his poem to be typed and saved first thing in the morning so I better get busy on that...I'm not near as fast on the computer as he is, so it might take me all night to get it right.

Jun. 10, 2007 - Gone Fishin...
We had a wonderful afternoon today! Yesterday, we went to target and the children bought daddy an early Father's Day present. A new bike! We don't generally do much for Mothers/Father's day, but this year the children really wanted to buy daddy a new bike for our family bike rides. We had a yardsale (actually we took stuff and Nana sold it for us...THANKS Nana!) a couple of weeks ago and earned almost enough money to buy the bike. We decided it would be best if daddy picked it out himself, so when we got to target for other things, we convinced him to try out a bike. He found one he thought would be just right and so today we had to try it out. We loaded all the bikes, all the children and all the fishing gear and headed a few miles away to the state park. It is times like this that I am VERY glad we have the big "bus", although when Aaron, Mag and Parker start riding their own bikes I think we will need a bigger bus or a trailer to pull or something. There is no more room in the inn! We had a great time riding the bike trail, rode just over two miles I think. Then we found a nice quiet spot near the bridge to go fishing. Parker was in the sling on my back and had a great time pulling leaves off the nearby trees and putting them in my hair and in his mouth. Aaron wasn't too interested in fishing, but he had fun running around and he enjoyed throwing bread in the water and saying "here fishy" hoping they would come when he called. No one caught any fish, but we did see some and I think Jay had nibbles a few times. We also saw some sort of turtle. There are no pictures because we were so busy trying to help with casting the lines and making sure no one fell in the water that the camera sat on the bike trailer forgotten. Actually, I think Kev did get one picture of Aaron, but the camera is downstairs and I don't think it was a very good picture anyways. I think this may become a regular occurance on lazy Sunday afternoons and that's fine by me...I'm not a huge fan of fishing, but it was quite enjoyable!

Jun. 9, 2007 - Corn in cookies...
Dell left a comment in reference to me saying that most cookies have corn in them. I thought I'd take a quick minute to explain that. I have found it simply amazing to discover how much our food supply is invaded by corn. It is absolutely no wonder that corn allergy is on the rise when you begin to look around a bit. It is everywhere, more than soy I think. It seems we have a huge surplus of corn and the governments answer to that is to find more and more uses for it. Everything from foods, to packaging, adhesives on envelopes and bandaids, even toilet paper contains corn in some form or fashion...usually in the form of a hard to remember (and sometimes hard to pronounce) derivative. I used to have no idea and really didn't concern myself with trying to figure out the potential sources of corn in everything. Until we discovered that at least two (the others haven't been tested yet) of our five children are corn allergic. We had no idea the frequent vomiting, horrible excema, belly aches and general feeling ill were mostly due to corn. Still seems funny to me considering we very rarely ate corn in it's most natural form. Anyways, I do have a point and it is this...if you use traditional ingredients to make cookies, than even your homemade cookies likely contain corn and if you buy storebought, well I think it's safe to say there isn't a corn free cookie to be found in your local supermarket (though there are a few out there in specialty markets). If you use iodized table salt in your cookies, a quick look at the label will show it contains dextrose...that's a corn derivative. If you use baking powder in your cookies, a quick look at that label will show it contains corn starch as an anti-caking agent. Powdered sugar contains cornstarch, most vanilla contains corn syrup, I've also read corn derivatives are used in the bleaching process of flour and sugar, but I don't know much about that. Some flours contain ascorbic acid (Vit. C) and if it's not imported than it is not natural vitamin C but rather a synthetic form that is derived from corn. So, if a friend comes over for dinner and happens to be corn allergic don't think that just avoiding popcorn, corn on the cob and corn chips will be safe...it's much more difficult than that!

Jun. 8, 2007 - Mag has big news...
She's reading! Woo Hoo! A few weeks ago, I was writing a grocery list and she wrote her name on the list and then asked me to spell something. That led to us spending half an hour of me writing three and four letter words and her reading them. She didn't miss one. She's been continuing to read words here and there, but yesterday she sat and read a couple of Bob books. She's so excited and I'm sure in no time she'll be devouring books like big brother Jay!

May. 30, 2007 - The Breakfast of Champions?
Cookies, Strawberries and Banana Icecream...YUM!

Parker skipped the icecream and cookie and settled for a few bites of strawberry, but he didn't seem to mind...
...the cookies are egg-free, dairy-free, corn-free (yes, most cookies have corn), homemade whole wheat sugar cookies and the icecream is actually just frozen bananas processed in the food processor.
