Farmers Market Update--

So... how many times last week did I mention how excited I was to go to the Farmers Market Satruday--

Well it was nothing but a HUGE disappointment!!

Oh-- I was able to purchase some produce-- but it all had a PLU # on it!!

Here is a pic of my "goodies"

Hmmm  don't think you grow banana's here in Central PA-- the rest COULD be found here...and I really thought the Asparagus might have REALLY been local--  but dh said as he was grilling it the rubber band had a PLU #!!
So---  I think I'm gonna FORGET the Farmers Market idea after all the next closest one is a drive and at $3.35+ per gallon- that's not gonna pay... so we will probably join a CSA...and call it a day-- I need to do some research and pick one that will work for us (and our budget).  (oh speaking of CSA's Crystal had a Frugal post on CSA's on her blog last week-- HERE- Frugal Friday- CSA's)
Not only was I a bit disappointed in the produce situation-- but I was also looking forward to chatting with the lady from whom we purchased our 2 goats from to see when more babies will be available!!
Unfortunately she is having some "serious" (hopefully not for long) liver issues and they did not breed any goats this year!!  She was able to give us the name and # of 2 ladies whom she trusts that we can be in contact with regarding breeding Precious in the fall...so that was a plus.    She told us this story about young "bucks" she said she has one that was 4-5 months old and one night he got out and BRED EVERYONE-- she had over 56 KIDS that year!!  (and she bottle feeds them ALL) - I couldn't imagine!!  WOW!!
Well I have learned to cut and prepare my produce AS SOON AS I GET HOME-- other wise it wont get done and it wont be eaten...so here is the finished product:
And.. I know I mentioned I had NEVER tried Aspargus--and was REALLY looking foward to giving it a try-- so I bought a "bunch" and dh prepared it on the grill with the chicken-- (he used EVOO and garlic) and LET ME TELL YOU...there was NONE left-- even the boys had seconds-- and that is SO not them- IT WAS DELICIOUS!!!!!!!!  I have no idea why I never had it before--and can't wait to get my hands on some more!!
It MIGHT have been a bit overcooked-- but nonetheless DELICIOUS!!

Golly-- my pictures dont' even compare to Tammy's-- her pictures make you HUNGRY!!!
Oh and I have another book to recomend-- and as soon as I have a bit of $$ in my allowance saved up..I want to buy it is...The Farmer's Wife Guide to Growing a Great Garden and Eating From it, Too!
It is an excellent book-- with a lot of tips on all kinds of produce-- how to grow it-- how to care for it-- how to prepare it!!  Well worth an investment!!

Denise, I couldn't help noticing the picture of your meal....You are supposed to cut a few inches off the bottom of asparagus! The bottom is tough & bitter.

You'll like it even more if you cut that part off! I promise.

I'm not the original poster, but if you just bend the last few inches of the asparagus while it's still fresh it will break where it's supposed to, saving you from cutting.

But cutting is good too. :)

I also prep my veggies as soon as possible! I use a different storage solution though (I never use round containers for anything because they waste so much space.) If I post about my "veggie basket" I'll link back to your post!

I love asparagus steamed for three minutes, then buttered and salted. But first, you need to hold the asparagus in your two hands, and begin to bend the asparagus with the hand that is at the head end, holding the other end firm, until it snaps. The head part is what you eat, whatever is left is what you toss in the compost!

Also, it is too early for most farmers markets to have real produce. You should be able to find plants, such as tomato, pepper, broccoli, but not much fresh to eat.
