Kellogg’s Share Your Breakfast program

March 8th, 2011

I just read about about the Kellogg’s Share Your Breakfast program http://www.shareyourbreakfast.com/

You snap a quick pic of your breakfast and text it or upload it, and Kellogg’s makes a donation to Action for Healthy Kids, who in turn provides more breakfasts to kids in schools.

Nearly 1 in 4 kids in America live in food insecure households….

This is a simple way that we can help!

Our week with Hoppin’ Popcorn and a giveaway

March 6th, 2011

Popcorn! Get your Popcorn here!

My kids and I grow up around corn.  My granddaddy was a farmer and he grew corn in his fields by the acre to sell for animal feed as well as corn in his garden for eating.  We are in Georgia so most of the corn produced here is for those purposes.  Not for popcorn. But with this study we learned about the corn belt in the midwest and all the types of corn that are best for making popcorn!

I was given a copy of this unit study for free for my honest review! Each Download N Go unit is one week in length. The age range for these units are K-4th grade. There are five days of activities, notebooking pages and lapbook components, book lists, internet links.

This is what the girls woke up to to start our unit:

Here is a sneek peek into the unit:

With the unit you will learn about corn, farming, geography, the history of popcorn and lots more. The book list that is included with the unit is great! You do not need the books however. All you need is included. There are links to websites, games, and videos to enhance your child’s learning. We always start our units off with a trip to the library. We didn’t find many of the specific titles but we did find plenty to keep us learning all week! Also included in the unit is family fun ideas and of course receipes!!

DNG Ireland Review

February 18th, 2011

It’s pretty ironic that the review team is doing the Ireland unit this week!  Lawton and  I went to see Celtic Women this weekend live in concert!  Mywhat talent!!

Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
With that aside…  The girls and I spent the week learning about Ireland with the Amanda Bennett Download n Go Unit Study.

With the unit you will  learn so much about Ireland.  This is the outline of the lessons for the week:

Day 1: Where on Earth Is Ireland?
Day 2: Some of the Special Places in Ireland
Day 3: A Bit of History
Day 4: Cool Things to Know About Ireland
Day 5: Fun and Games in Ireland

During the unt we learned about geography, science. math and lots more.  Our favorite part of the study was learning about a new irish animal each day!

The book list that is included with the unit is great!  You do not need the books however.  All you need is included in the unit study.  There are links to websites, games, and videos to enhance your child’s learning.  We always start our units off with a trip to the library.  We found a few of the books listed and some other ones that were great as well!

With each of these units there is a lapbook to print.  Don’t worry if you have never done it before, it includes very clear instructions on how to put it all together. If you are more into notebooking the unit also includes worksheets that you can print as well.  The options are really endless with these studies!  you can print as little or as much as you want!  This is a small sample of what is included:

If you would like to do this study with your kids if can be purchased here: http://unitstudy.com/ExpeditionIreland.html

Professor Time and the American Revolution Play

February 14th, 2011

The local community theatre puts on school shows from time to time.  This past week they had Professor Time and the American Revolution.  This was a description from the website.

Take a trip with quirky Professor Time to Colonial America to find out about the birth of our nation. Meet George Washington and Betsy Ross to learn what sparked the American Revolution and how we ended up with a Declaration of Independence and a United States government. This multi-media experience uses live stage, video, and so much more to create a truly interactive learning experience. Students won’t know they’re learning!

You can learn more and see a preview here:  http://www.thestoryship.com/#s=4

We got to sit in the boxed seats!! And my ticket was FREE because I am a teacher!

William was with us too, he just missed being in the picture!

Tales of a Fouth Grade Nothing Play

February 14th, 2011

We are lucky enough to live near a local university that does school shows throughout the year.  This past week they put on a play based on Judy Blume’s Tales of Fourth Grade Nothing.  We had great seats and enjoyed the show.  Evamarie is now reading the book and tell us all about what is the same and what different in the show and the book.  She wants to read all of the other books in the series as well!
