Natural Paths

16 May 2008

The aftermath

Even with gas prices so ridiculously high, we took a quick drive around our immediate area last evening.  I just could not wrap my brain around how 3600+ acres burned ... now I can!  To say my jaw dropped open and stayed open is an understatement.  It's just as devastating as hurricanes Frances and Jeanne in 2004, but in a completely different way.  The landscape around here is going to look quite different for a long while .......

To say that the firefighters did an amazing job is also an understatement.  They saved so many structures.  It took my breath away to see homes and barns where everything around them was completely burned yet they are still standing untouched.  Bravo, bravo, bravo to the firefighters!  There are some homes and structures we could never see before due to dense trees and foliage surrounding them ... they are clearly visible now.......

As I said before, unfortunately some homes, vehicles, and other structures were totally destroyed.......

We are at 70% containment in my immediate area as of this morning.  The hot spots are continuing to be monitored for flare ups.  We have a small chance of rain this afternoon.

Wow. Your photos make it "real" for me in a way I wasn't expecting. It's a blessing to have seen it, in a bitter-sweet way. I'm so glad your family and and property was spared. I'm glad so many structures and buildings were preserved.

I'll be in prayer for rain for you all...and for the fire to be quenched.

The devastation in your area is awful. I am so glad that they caught the arsonist, but sorry for all the destruction he caused.
Has the "small" chance of rain happened yet? Continuing to pray for rain!

Oh my goodness. I had no idea. We don't watch much tv. Even though my husband usually watches the news on break at work, I had not heard about the fires. I will keep your family in my prayers!

I'm so glad you all are safe! We were in the Smokies when this all started and my daughter called and asked us to come home early. We've been praying for you as I knew you lived close but wasn't sure how close.

I don't know if this is 'good' news or not, but a meteorologist friend of mine, just told me this morning, that we have a tropical storm heading our way for early June. Hopefully, it well bring much needed rain and take it easy on all other fronts.

Keep us posted and stay safe!!

Wow! Seeing it on tv makes it seem so far away and surreal. But, seeing your pictures are very eye opening! How scary. Seeing the picture of the large house that was saved with all the burned trees around it is scary! I imagine it would be kind of unsettling to live there now. I guess one could choose to either live now in disgust or with new eyes and realize how blessed they are that their home is still there! Wow!
