I have posted a bit about the history and geography of Nebraska and now will delve into our state's economy, with some suggested field trips along the way.
The Bureau of Economic Analysis estimates of Nebraska's gross state product in 2004 was $68 billion. Per capita personal income in 2004 was $31,339, 25th in the nation.
Historically, ranching has been the mainstay of our economy. 49% of Nebraska is designated ranchland. In 1997, Nebraska was ranked second in the US in cattle production. Ted Turner, who is the largest private land owner (individual...International Paper actually owns more) in the United States with his 1.7 million acres of ranchland owns a piece of Nebraska. He purchased 70,000 acres in the panhandle region of our state, in addition to his 54,000 acre Spikebox Ranch!
To learn more about this significant part of our state's economy, take a look at some of these field trip destinations:
Near Calloway, you experience the more traditional ranching life at Ridder's Ranch.
North of Chadron, in western NE, you can take a family vacation on the Box L Ranch and even help with the branding around Mother's Day!
Have you been to any of these places? Leave a comment and let us know how it was! Planning a field trip? Even if it is to the local grocery store, we'd love to hear how you planned it and how things went!
