The Road Less Traveled

• Sep. 6, 2008 - Neither fire nor flood

Posted By Hands and Hearts in Noah Updates
I'm glad so many of you were amused by the story of my little pyromaniacs.    There were actually two perpetrators, and all I'm going to say about their identities is that no one who knows my children would have guessed that combo!  They didn't succeed in causing any damage - one was taking matches out of a box and handing them to the other child, who kept dropping them out of terror that they would self-combust.  The matches (I didn't even know we HAD matches) were soaked and discarded, and the perpetrators were dealt with firmly.  I don't believe we'll be dealing with this issue ever again!

We are safe and sound from Hanna's wrath.   We live in the western Piedmont area of SC, far away from the coast.  It is hot and sunny today at our house!  We had a wonderful picnic with some friends today.  We couldn't stay very long because Noah started to get really hot in spite of his cooling vest.

Noah has been distinctly "off" today and we don't know why.  He is lethargic and withdrawn.  I don't know if the anemia is kicked in enough to make him feel bad, or if something else is brewing .  .  . I just know I really, really don't like how he's looking.  He's also got some odd, unexplained bruises all along one fore arm.  That troubles me.  His nurse is coming on Monday and I'll show her the bruises then.  We are supposed to go to Jeff's parent's house to celebrate his dad's birthday this evening.  They live just around the corner so if Noah gets hot or doesn't perk up, I'll just bring him home early.

Now that Hands and Hearts is incorporated, we have to have regular board of directors meetings.  Since Jeff and I are the only ones on the board :-), the meetings double as dates paid for by the business.  We had a "meeting" at my favorite Indian restaurant the other night (yum, yum, yum).  Mary Faith woke up just as my meal arrived.  She didn't want toys and she didn't want to nurse - she wanted to grab my plate.  She's been 100% nursed her whole life, but Thursday she decided she wanted Indian food!  I finally tore off a chunk of naan bread (like a really thick tortilla, but 1,000 times yummier) and gave it to her.  The little cutie sat on my lap cheerfully gumming her bread the rest of the evening.  It was unbelievably cute.  Last night she pulled the same "I must have your plate" stunt at dinner so we put her in her bumbo on the table and gave her some crackers which she very passionately devoured.  Mary Faith is extremely tiny with a very petite build, and it looks so funny to see her eating like that.  She had more crackers at the picnic.  Sigh.  It's the dawn of a whole new age.  All of my babies have enjoyed organic biter biscuits that are very hard and not as messy as crackers.  I ordered some online for her and hope they come before the wedding so I can take them to Florida.  They are sweetened with a touch of pure maple syrup, and I LOVE the smell of my babies' breath after they gnaw a biscuit - they smell like buttermilk pancakes.  :-)  Of course, I love the way babies smell anyway!

Keep dear Noah in your prayers.  I promise to update ASAP if things go south.

Blessings,
Kate

• Friday, September 5, 2008 - The Egg Celebration

Posted By JenniferJ in School Things
Hi, I'm Habanero.

I just got these eggs in the mail! They are quail eggs, Button Quail.

When we opened the box, there were twelve eggs, but one of them was cracked. The cracked egg was blueish-green in color. I opened up the egg and it had a yolk. It was kind of interesting. The other eggs are brown, white, peanut butter color, and a whitish-green one with poop on it.  (Big sigh from Mom!) They all have dots on them, and that's kind of interesting. I've never seen that many eggs all dottish.

Tomorrow we will put them in the incubator. I will be turning the eggs 3 times each day. Mom drew Xs and Os on the eggs. It was very scary for me. I thought she might crack one. The Xs and Os are for keeping track of the eggs when we turn them. I'll be turning them for 14 days. They will hatch around day 16. The eggs should hatch on or after September 21st.

Mom says we'll keep you posted!

Bye! I'm going to hang out with my mom now.

Friends, I'll try to get you all some pictures of this little temporarily insane "moment" I'll be having. I guess I'll be hanging out with my son now?  ;')

• Sep. 5, 2008 - Not for the Serious Minded Reader

Posted By MaggieRaye in Just Ramblin
Okay, you were warned in the Title, this is not for the serious reader.  And yet, there is an element of seriousness about it.

If you've seen the movie, The Wedding Planner, you'll understand that the new favorite line around our house is, "You saved. . . . my shoe."  If you haven't seen it, you just won't appreciate the rest of the post in it's entirety.

My daughter is developing an addiction to shoes.  Now, I really wouldn't mind, if they were practical shoes she was actually going to have many occasions to wear.  But these shoes....

Today she bought 4 pair of evening/prom type shoes -- remember please here, we live in rural (read the woods or hicksville) New England.  We need things like LL Bean Boots 3/4 of the year, just to be practical.  The dressiest place we go is church, and Bean Boots are standard issue for this about 6 months out of the year, as well.  No real need for one pair of cute little black strappies, (which she already owned) never mind four more pair of these types of shoes.

Oh, her behalf, at least she did buy them to match the three formal dresses she has in her closet, which she really has no occasion to wear either, but that is fodder for another post.

These are shoes that city girls wear to proms, evening out for dinner in a nice restaurant, office parties.  Serious, fancy shoes.

Now, the serious side of this is that LizBeth's aunt is feeding this habit, by working for Dyeables.  The shoe warehouse is seriously less than a block away from our house.  There are no retail stores near us that carry these shoes, but we have access to them.  This is not good for someone with my daughters "condition".  But  on the upside Scripture does teach that we should, "Train up a child. . " and to be good stewards, so I will tell you that retail, todays purchases would have cost . . .

are you sitting down, cause this is really kinda. . . well, mind blowing really.

$392.85 not including sales tax or the hand bag that her aunt bought for her that retails for $33.99 - who actually spends that much on something that small????

Okay, the catch is that it was a warehouse sale so LizBeth spend a grand total of $2.  Yes, that is right.  I've trained her up well.  If she must buy those ridiculously impractical shoe wanna-be's, at least she got her money's worth (after all she saved $390.85, which she didn't have to begin with, but hey, it's a nice thought, right) -- well, maybe... I'm still not sure that they were actually worth $2, but I know that they were definitely not worth $392.85.

Champaign taste and a beer pocketbook, yup it's genetic.  I have grand taste -- though not in shoes, but I think this even tops my wildest of wild moments.

And most of all, it's just fun to tease her about in front of the whole world -- or at least the small corner of it that stops by here.

Oh, and now, there are four more boxes to pack and move, way to go, LizBeth, we're suppose to be paring down not adding stuff to our personal belonging.!

Hope you enjoyed this little side trail from our normal seriousness.

Blessings amidst the silliness,
MaggieRaye

• Sep. 5, 2008 - Flashback Friday: Happy Birthday, Annaleigh!...Now Stop Getting So Old!

Posted By kellieann in Flashback Fridays

***I apologize for the late hour of this post.  If any of you were thinking of joining in, you have probably by now gone on to blog about bigger and better things.  I got up this morning at 5:30am to post this, only to discover that our internet service was down...again.  I've decided that I really hate Charter.***

Tomorrow is Annaleigh's 12th birthday.  12th?!  Now, c'mon, this is getting ridiculous.  How did that happen?

How does this cute, chubby little infant who is about to chew on my table leg....

...morph, seemingly overnight, into this cute, tall, slender pre-teen who is about to chew on some chicken fingers and fries that she made herself?

Please, someone, help.  If you know the formula for putting time in a bottle and slowing everything down, I need to know....f-a-s-t!  I will pay top-dollar!

I know we're basically half-way through Friday at this point (curses on you, Charter!!!), but if you still have a flashback post lingering around, please post a link below....

I also wanted to let you know that I will no longer be posting my Flashbacks every Friday.  I'm not sure if there will be any rhyme or reason to when I actually post them....I guess when the inspiration hits.  I will try to let you know through the week before I post one, so that you can plan to join in if you'd like.

• Sep. 5, 2008 - Show and tell Friday~Tree house

Posted By Dawn

It is that time again!  To see more Show and Tells go to Canadagirl.  This week  I am going to show what my wonderful husband built for the children.  He spent last weekend building them a tree house.  The kids have wanted a tree house for a long time.  We have a huge Southern Magnolia tree in our front yard that the kids love to climb.  It provides such wonderful shade that the kiddos do not need sunscreen in the summer if they play under it.

My dh mostly used left over wood from the basement! Yeah!! This was a win-win situation. I got the basement a bit more cleaned out, my dh got to work with his hands after a long week of paperwork, and the kids got a new secret world to make up a hundred stories in.  The tree house is a platform 63 inches off the ground with railings and homemade ladder.  All 4 kids can play up in it at the same time.

Tom Sawyer is in heaven up there!

Two man duck duck goose in the tree house.

The view when on your back looking up in the tree house.

Blessings,

Dawn

• Sep. 5, 2008 - Resisting buying....

Posted By Dawn

This morning I am resisting running off to the state fair.  It is "free" today for students.  As with many things, "free" is not really free.  I, alas, am not a student and would have to pay my entry fee.  Also, I suspect that my kids would be disappointed with not being allowed to go on the rides because those cost extra. Oh and the 30 miles worth of gas to get us there and back. Then there is the question of cotton candy!  You see, during the July 4th celebration downtown we discovered that some of our dear children had never had cotton candy.  Can you imagine? LOL!  We stood in a very long line to get them some cotton candy, and it sold out right before we got to the counter.   So how would I pass up the rows of cotton candy just sitting there for some outrageous fee if we went to the fair?

One of the important things to me about doing this project is getting back to basic simple pleasures.  So instead of running off and spending money, we are going to enjoy the simple pleasures in life today.  The kids are going to enjoy the view from their new tree house, and I am going to enjoy the $12 to $15 I saved in my bank account by staying home. (Hubby built the kids a new tree house for the grand total of $18 dollars the weekend before Not Buying Month.)

Here is the view while laying on one's back in the new tree house (Southern Magnolia) ~

Blessings,

Dawn

My oldest was in her first ever public performance a few weeks ago. As a former theatre major, I am so proud!

Sorry for the poor quality video - the lighting was terrible in the old theater. I tried to keep her in the center of the picture, so see if you can pick her out!

• Sep. 5, 2008 - More fun from Branson

Posted By Jes in Kidisms

While in Branson we visited the "Wild Woody", which is a go cart with an elevated wooden track. Follow this link to see Geoffrey having a blast as his daddy takes him for a ride... (you can also get glimpse of Cuyler and I waving from behind them) Definately the best go cart track we have ever driven on.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gq3ondKbbM0 *woozy warning* this is filmed from the driver seat of the go-cart so it is a bit wobbly - but Geoffrey's comment at the end is worth the ride he is screaming the whole ride and then.... ! (if you have a weak stomach, let it download and fast forward to the last 30 seconds to hear Geoffrey's comment)

And be sure to notice his beanie cap - Preston brought it to him from Ghana in June and he has worn it every day since - no matter that it is sweltering hot and his hair is soaked from sweat! He even takes it to bed , tis a very cool cap!

• Sep. 4, 2008 - Evacuation Vacation

Posted By Jes in Life in General

Hurricane Gustav gave us all a scare, esp Post Katrina. We did evacuate, all the way to Branson,MO. We picked Branson because we found a hotel there that (with a timeshare presentation) was $20 for 3 nights including breakfast and 2 tickets to IMAX. What a steal! My generous father in law (we love that guy, for so many reasons) let us use his company's cargo van instead of our van (which has nearly 300k miles!) we put a mattress in the back of the van, packed the suitcases and comuters and food around the kiddos and took off. Fourteen hours later we arrived in Branson and it is beautiful, we love the mountains and this was our first visit to the Ozarks. Breathtaking. And we discovered again just how amazing our God is. You see, about a month ago, my very best friend from Junior High found me online. We had not talked in over 10 years. It was nice to chat online with her and catch up on our lives. Turns out she lives very close to Branson (didn't know that when we booked - just excited about the 20 bucks!) We were able to spend some time with her family and catch up in person. It was such a blessing. This is the girl whose family took me to church as a young teen and really lived the Christian life, I was an unsaved kid from a messed up home, and they loved me anyhow and made me feel like family. It was wonderful to visit with them, Rae and Shawn - thanks again for dinner - next time we will play host to you!

While in Branson there is soo much to do, we will have to go back again. I really had no idea this town was such a great place. The first day we took the kids to see Table Rock Dam, they understood how a dam works from watching a special on the Hoover Dam a few months back, it was awesome to see one in real life! Under the dam, Missouri has a fish hatchery where they breed Rainbow and Brown Trout to stock the rivers and lakes. The kids did not even realize they were having 'school' the hatchery was very interesting, and they loved feeding the fish. Geoffrey was on the hunt for spiders (there were several webs outside by the fish), his awe struck face admiring the spider web just choked me up. He is so.darn.cute! We spent the afternoon at the Branson Mall - I had never seen a mall with Wal-Mart inside - what a strange thing! At the mall there is a free music show featuring local talent. We stayed and watched the cutest little girls sing. There was a most adorable redhead about 7 yrs old, she tapdanced to the 'Hampster Dance' ~ the highlight of the show!

The next morning we had to do the timeshare presentation. We arrived promptly at 9:30am (no small feat for our family of late sleepers!) After filling out some paperwork, we were told that we were in the wrong place and had to go back to the hotel. OOOKKK, so we did, and of course they had no clue... turns out the timeshare people saw us piling out of the refugee van and decided we were not a 'good prospect'. We did tell the lady selling us the deal we were not interested in buying a timeshare, we were honest with our situation, she knew we were fleeing the storm.... anyhow, the company we booked through ended up honoring their end with the room (not the tickets -big whoop - we just really wanted a safe place to sleep away from Gustav!) and we avoided sitting through the speel. However, at the mall, we booked another timeshare deal in exchange for tickets to the "Acrobats of China" show. The timeshare dude kept us there for THREE HOURS!!! Ugh, but the show was AMAZING! What those people can do with their bodies was incredible. It was very similar to the Circue de Soleil acrobats, but to see it live was wonderful. And we had great seats, right in the center, just a few rows back. There was also a really talented magician, we love to watch magic shows and always try to figure out the trick, but live is just so different. It was captivating.

After the show, we went back to the room and cleaned up - by then Gustav had made his way north and we were beginning to feel the rain and wind. We checked out at midnight and started toward home. We did take a detour through Keller, TX (near Dallas) to visit dear friends who moved away after Katrina. Andre' got some much needed rest and I got some much needed "Katie time!" They treated us to dinner and some laughs, almost convinced us to move in down the street from them! It was difficult to leave...our next evacuation vacation will be to their home! The kids loved being together again, and it was pure joy to hold Nathalie again! Thank you my friend - I am tearing up just remembering yesterday - I miss you already!

We pulled into our driveway at 7am Thursday. We are exausted, but filled with joy to see our home and city spared - except for spotty areas that are still without power. We do have power, and have no damage except a fence board down and a messy yard! Today we clean up and tomorrow it is back to reality! Thankfully, because we began school in July we did not lose much by taking this 'Evacuation Vacation' and we will get back to school in the morning. My local friends and family, who fled to areas near for saftey and those who stayed, I am glad to hear all is well, and challenge you - next time - go far enough away where you can enjoy your time and where the weather is nice!

In other news, we have a new school name. We began our homeschool adventures as "The L**** Institute for Advanced Learning" (guess who came up with that doozy  and Preston was only in first grade!) we changed our name along the way to "Joy Learning Center" we wanted our school filled with JOY and teach our kids to focus on J - Jesus, O - others then Y- yourself. so it was fitting. But now we are nearing graduation for our oldest and Joy Learning Center engraved on his class ring and his diploma just did not sound right! We held an election. The names nominated were "The Academy", "Things Go Better with God School", "Candy School", "M********* Street School", "Life Academy", "PCCCG Academy", "Academy of Joyful Learning", and "L.I.F.E."

Drum roll please.....

We are officially announcing the new name for our school: L.I.F.E. (L**** Institute For Education) it is a fitting acronym and encapsulates what we teach here... "LIFE".

• Wednesday, September 3, 2008 - COH and Stuff

Posted By diamondsintherough
Hey everyone! The Carnival of Homeschooling is up, this week's theme being the labors of the homeschooler.  (In case you haven't noticed, and in case I blow it off and forget to post a reminder, like I did last week, The CoH is posted each Tuesday.)  Just click on the link on my Carnivals widget.  My, there is such a wealth of information out there, isn't there?  Sometimes it is a bit overwhelming.  I go through phases where I covet a copy of every smart thing I read, thereby trashing my desktop and my My Documents folder... and then there are times like now, when I think, you know, I was getting along just fine without all that information, with just the Lord guiding us.  It was a lot easier and there was a lot less guilt, lol. And I spent more time with my family! That is  one reason why I have avoided some of the more popular hang-outs, such as the Homeschool Lounge.  I haven't been to this Carnival yet, but I'm planning to go.  Soon.  Just in case someone has contributed a good laugh.

Not much school news around here...

Booklover did a huge non-interlocking world map puzzle just for fun and accidentally learned a whole bunch of geography...

Alizona has decided she wants to learn Morse Code so she and her sister can communicate after "lights out"...

Carrotlover actually did an entire history/geography lesson ALL BY HERSELF yesterday, with a GOOD ATTITUDE   (The crowd roars!)

...and Emily, who is four, wants to know if she is old enough to wear deodorant. lol.

We had an excellent illustration this morning, a purely homeschool type of lesson, in which, after Booklover vomited up the entire undigested contents of a can of mushrooms on her bedroom carpet, we learned that it is a good idea  to actually chew one's food, and not to merely inhale consume it. *rolls eyes*

Also in the news, I allowed Alizona to ride her bike 1/2 mile to the library today, to work on her book in a less distracting environment, under the condition that she be back in the house in ONE HOUR.  It is just way too scary for me. I am still getting over it.

I'm getting ready to send my dear husband on an overnight trip to Kansas next week so he can have lunch at a great rib place with our pastor. Sounds like a pricey lunch, don't you think?  This 98% male customer rib joint is a little hole in the wall, disguised as sort of an antique shop.  The eating area is not even visible from the entry, very strange.  It's one of Wichita's best kept secrets. To assure you that his desire to go there is not entirely carnal, my husband will be preaching the mid-week service at our old church.  He will arrive  in Wichita in the afternoon, preach that night, eat ribs for lunch with Pastor the next day, then immediately board his return flight so that he can get home in time to pick up his family and preach at his own church that evening.  Wow, he is joining the jet-set, isn't he?  His round trip to the airport and back will take longer than his flight to Kansas. LOL!

Alizona and I watched a man and woman training their dogs early this morning.  They were working on getting one dog to sit up from a lying down position, and it was quite comical.  The woman would give the signal and the verbal command, and the guy, who was holding the dog's leash, would give a yank on the dog's collar.  The dog eventually figured out that if he would get up quickly, he wouldn't be strangled.  Success!  The woman was so excited!  She and the dog had a party! They repeated the routine a dozen times, and the dog had it down. Whoo-hoo!  Then the lady backs up from him about 20 feet and repeats the command.  ...Nothing.  The dog stays on the ground. Yank. Slowly gets up. Okay, back down.  ...UP! Dog merely looks at trainer.  Yank! Gets up a little bit faster, but not exactly obedient.  This is repeated several times.  Alison asks me why doesn't the dog know what the trainer wants him to do, when he just did it about 12 times?  I told her I don't know, but it's a lot like training kids.  lol.  Am I wrong?

Have a great week weekend, everyone. Looks like Thursday snuck up on me! (How DOES that happen?!)
