Sep. 4, 2008 Homeschool Memoirs #3
My schedule...I am still working out the kinks. We start our day together, Devotions, Bible, Math and History...then I do what needs to be done for the day...usually laundry and she finishes up. The schedule is rough...but we try to stay as close to it as possible...
I am up and about by 7:00, I usually take the dogs out, make the coffee and talk to my husband where ever he his for the week.
Brittany is awake by 8:00...she does the whole bathroom thing and then feeds the dogs and walks them before she has breakfast...then we eat our breakfast.
8:45 Devotions
9:00 Bible
9:30 Math
10:30 History
11:30 American Literature
12:00 Lunch
12:30 Science
1:30 English
2:00 French
3:00 Monday through Thursday we leave for dance...as an assistant she has to be there by 3:30. I either come home or stay in the area and do errands...sometimes, when it is nice I just take along a book and read. Monday and Wednesday she isn't finished until 8:30...Tuesday and Wednesday she is finished at 7:30. We come home, eat something light and get ready to start all over again the next day.
I really try to get all of our lessons in Monday through Thursday...sometimes we have to add in a Friday...but we try to save Fridays for home projects, appointments and cleaning...all that kind of stuff.

Oh What a Feeling
Assignment: Take time this week to write about YOU and your feelings of trials and triumphs with homeschooling. Touch on when you first heard about the concept of home schooling and whether you tip-toed into the idea or just jumped in and never looked back. Share your schooling as a child and how you compare it to what your goals are for your children.
I began thinking about homeschooling the day I walked my soon to be three year old daughter through the halls of a pre-school at a little church down our street. At that time I felt pressured by other mom’s in our Sunday school class that were doing the same thing. When I walked out the doors we walked home and I just held her and cried. That was the turning point for me. We fought infertility for many years (another story) and I couldn’t imagine that after just a couple of years of being a mommy I would have to turn her over to someone else for the biggest part of her day.
We began to talk about it…and being the investigator that I am, I began to research homeschooling and knew that this is what we needed to do. My husband was in full agreement with me…it was our decision for our daughter together. I guess we were like pioneers because no-one in either of our families had ever heard of it…well, I take that back, his side (Dennis) is filled with teachers so you can imagine the raised eyebrows that little old me got when we began talking about it. At first we were always questioned about socializing…never the learning…only how we were going to mix her in with other children. We were very involved in Church and our church had a huge homeschooling group that we attended at first. But life has its way of just ironing out all those details. Turns out…my daughter can talk and associate with people of all ages…and she makes eye contact…which is a rare thing among teens these days.
Of course we have had challenges…but that was just growing up stuff…like for instance, I would walk out of the room only to find her hiding under the table on my return…was that a problem. At the time, I would scratch my head but oh what I wouldn’t do to go back to that time. We had tears in math too but year by year I began to see a change, even today, I see each year how she grows and matures and begins to want to carry the load all by her self. (sigh!)
The most wonderful thing for me is the relationship that I have with my daughter. How I can gear her schooling to HER interests. To really know her from the inside out, I wouldn’t have traded this for anything in the world. To have been a witness to it, to have watched her grow up right in front of me has been my greatest joy.
I grew up in the country. My dad worked and my mom was a stay at home mom. I liked school ok. I was the token “timid” child (oh, how I hate that word). Not really though, I was just the child that was compliant and didn’t like to get into trouble. I remember bringing books home from the library and crawling up on my dad’s lap as he would read them to me at night. I remember, my mom working with me on school projects and never giving up…she would help me until it was completely done. I remember reading the Bible to my little brother at night and always wanting to teach him not to be afraid in the dark. Maybe these were all seeds that were planted in me through the years, I don’t know. I do know one thing. I never had to read a whole book in school. Many people tell me that they read this book or that…not me…don’t know why exactly either.
One of the many blessings of homeschooling has been to sit under a cozy quilt on a cold day (and we have a lot of them) and dig into a great book. I sure wish that I had been taught this way…it sure would have given me a head start on life.
Philippians 2:14-16
14Do everything without complaining or arguing, 15so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life—in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing.

Aug. 29, 2008 We are off and running...
and off to a great start. We did our school work for 3.5 days this week...mainly because I have to prime and paint a wall in my bathroom today because we are still without a cabinet and sink. Dennis comes home tonight, which is a nice change so he is hoping to get that cabinet in this weekend.
Next week, we start 4 nights of dance for the next 9 months. I am looking for good, healthy recipes that I can prepare, so that I have enough left overs to freeze or have on hand as it gets really crazy around here. We usually finish school by 2:00, although I try to be done by 1:30...She has to be at dance every night by 3:30 because she has responsibilities to perform that go along with the teaching part of her day. It is very, very easy to resort to fast food and I hate that...so...as many of us face this I thought maybe we could post some our our favorite recipes and give each other some ideas. I am not doing anything formal...like a linky or anything...but if you want to post your recipe on your blog site and comment me...we can do some good recipe sharing...I watched the Food Network yesterday and Paula Deen had a scrumptious looking soup on there that sounds perfect for fall when the days become cooler...I'll post two of them here...

Aug. 27, 2008 This weeks assignment...
But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
James 1:5 NASB
The above verse is the verse that has helped me throughout all the years of school. Without asking God for wisdom I would never have made it...
This year we will be studying the time period from 1815-1900.
I usually split my school year into three terms but with history this year I have split my year into semesters. I like using terms because it breaks up the year into bite size pieces, this also helps with saving money...because I only worry about buying resources for one term at a time. Two of my favorite sites that I rely upon heavily is Amblesideonline and OldFashionedEducation
I am always checking out book lists...I guess it is my hobby and one of my favorite things to do. On the above sites...you can find many books for free and for the cost of a printer inkjet I can print many of them myself...most of her literature books I buy though as I am building a library for my grandchildren someday...

Brittany is an assistant teacher at the Performing Arts Dance Studio where she takes classes. This year she will also co-teach for two classes with another student and together they will choreograph 2 complete dances. One for ages 7-8 in Tap and Pre-teen in Jazz.
Our school consists of the use of whole books and living books as we journey along. Our reading is very heavy but we love it and learn so much every year...

Aug. 26, 2008 A brand new year...

This Weeks Assignment: This week, we want to hear about YOU. The author behind the words. The Momma behind all the homeschooling kiddos. Just write up something about you, your family, and your home. How long you’ve been homeschooling and why you decided to homeschool. It doesn’t have to be anything lengthy at all, but we’d love to hear it! You might include a family photo too!
I find it always a challenge to talk about me...but here it goes:
My name is Joyce and I have been married to my love, my best friend for 23 1/2 years. It doesn't seem possible. We have known each other since we were thirteen and were friends via our youth group at church until he asked me out on our first date (which was a Christian rock concert by the way...) when we were both 17. We dated for five years and then on a beautiful summer day he proposed...we were married on March 23, 1985.
After eight years of infertility we were finally blessed with the birth of our daughter Brittany. She just turned 16! I truly mean blessed because at 2 months pregnant I quit my outside job and awaited my dream...to be a stay at home mom. I have not regretted a single day since I walked out of those doors, I mean, sure...sometimes it get rough on a single income but the Lord has blessed our family over the years. I began homeschooling her at the age of 4...at that time I felt pressured to put her into preschool. After two attempts of walking through the hallway of a preschool down the street from us...I went and bought a couple coloring books with numbers and letters and so we began. It is hard to believe that she is in 11th grade this year. I try not to think too hard about it because I start getting those same feelings as I did when I walked the hall of that preschool...that sort of sick in the pit of my stomach sort of feeling.
We have 3 dogs and a Holland Lop bunny...we had an Ectopic Pregnancy emergency in 2001 and obviously I have suffered with secondary infertility since Brittany...so to ease our hearts we decided to fill our home with pets...we have a yellow lab who is 8, and two black and white Shih Tzu 's (6 and 1)that are my babies...because they love to be babied. We keep pretty busy...we love to ride bikes along the Ohio Erie Canal Towpath and we love going to the ocean every summer...usually Vero Beach, Florida.
I use an eclectic approach with my schooling. I love the Charlotte Mason method and use it as much as I can. Brittany and I have found a true love for History and we enjoy digging deep every year and each year we fall more and more into it. We hope to try our hand at co-writing historical fiction someday. (something we are both looking forward to)
That is really us in a nutshell. We are just a typical, happy, hardworking, funloving family!

Aug. 21, 2008 Just a typical day in the neighborhood...
Some may call me crazy...but I am thrilled. Brittany and Rachel have formed a little group in the neighborhood...along with 3 other younger children. One of them went back to her dad in Texas already...but the other two children follow Brittany around like little ducklings...it is so cute. Forest is 11 and his little sister Elyna is 6. These two older girls take walks with them as they ride their bikes...and I just have to laugh when they see each other every day they all greet each other with hugs. It is just so cute! Anyway...tonight we are having a end of summer sleepover...I will have a 4 kids...16,14,11 and 6. I know the age difference seems strange...but these kids really do all get a long so good...more like family I guess. We'll get the Playstation out, Brittany is going to get her Bratz dolls out for Elyna, find a kids movie and have some snacks...then they will all camp out in our living room. I have always wanted a house full of kids...so this will be fun for me.
I really need to get up to my bathroom today and do the sanding so that is where I'll be...my notification paperwork is complete...so I need to send it in to the school board and we will be ready to go. I am getting really excited about starting school again...even though, I don't want summer to end.

Aug. 20, 2008 No more leaks...did I mention the stitches?
Yep, that is right, by Friday night all the leaks were fixed although our drain was clogged...we aren't sure why but we went back to the hardware store, bought some commercial grade Drano and it took about 15 hours to clear. I woke up and used the bathroom at 5:30 AM Saturday morning...washed my hands in the tub and noticed the water was gone. Boy were we relieved.
We spent Saturday putting in the drywall. We only had time to do that area where the vanity will go...and along another wall. My husband moved a light fixture for me since our mirror will be in a different place on our new walls. We picked up our vanity and trimmed the area for the plumbing...had to go back to the hardware store THREE times for the sink...but finally have everything we need. My job this week is to sand and paint the primer and the color we choose for the bathroom around the area that the vanity will be placed...that way the wall will be finished and look nice back there. I'll wait on everything else until all the dry wall is finished.
This has been a good week...our last official week of summer...Brittany and Rachel are making use of every possible moment. Brittany got her rebate back from her cell phone and was so excited that she had a VISA card in her name...at least it was a gift card...off we went yesterday for one of our mom and daughter days...we went to see Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and we both loved it...then we went to buy all of our notebooks, paper, pencils, pens...all that good stuff...we went to Target, and this was the first year that Brittany said it was all for young kids...at that moment I knew my girl was growing up...so we went up front for our school supplies...for them to have that more grown up look.
Then off to spend her Visa card...she bought a couple pairs of jeans and 3 tops I think...
Back home we came and I went and walked on the treadmill at the Y. I have gotten off track with summer and a bladder infection that I had in July...who feels like exercising with a bladder infection?
Oh yeah, the stitches...while we were away the girls had a late night snack attack...going after veggies with ranch dressing from the fridge, Brittany broke a pyrex measuring cup and boy, that thing shattered all over the place. I am not kidding...it looked like a crime scene. Dennis and I cleaned everything up...I put Brittany in the shower with hand above her head and off to the ER we went at 12:30AM...on the way home we stopped a the Waffle House...which was a first for us and either we were really hungry or it was comfort food...but it was really good. Britt and I are off to the doctor to remove the stitches today. I tried last night...but they are too tight and I don't have scissors small enough...oh well...that's all for today...chow! |
