old fashioned learning

This weekend we attended an old fashioned festival which offered lots of fun experiences for us. The girls dug potatoes out of the ground, washed and sliced them for cooking on a camp fre, tasted cookies made in a dutch oven, made butter, watched apple butter being made, talked with a woman, spinning, and a wood carver, played with old fashioned toys, ground corn, played with chicks, listened to music ect. great family time.

professor funnybone.

Tonight we are involving daddy . He will be weringhis silly glasses and calling himself professor funnybone. Whenever professor funnybone comes to visit he has two things on his mind. one tickling. two science. Tonight we will be using our microscope to talk about microorganisms living in our home. I knew there was a reason I was growing that mildew in the shower!

toilet overflow

ahh nothing like having your day interrupted with a plumbing problem. We were plugging along real good getting lots done when the toilet overflowed! What a mess It went into Rachel's room and soaked the carpet in her closet. Boy do I have a mess to clean up now. No such thing as a boring day.

glimpses of what's going on here

What is on my mind: lapbooking, really wish I had some file folders but I can't find mine. Seriously thinking about teaching the girls to crochet.

From the schoolhouse: right now we're working on God's plan for government, birds, and microscopes.

I am thankful for: an abundance of tomatoes from my garden and consequently homemade salsa.

From the kitchen: lots of homemade salsa lately. Thinking about chicken and dumplings tonight.

I am reading:  A book about Hitler

I am hearing : little girls playing polly pockets

Around the house: I am surrounded by books!

Plans for the week: Tomorrow Sarah starts homeschool orchestra and I'm soo excited I can't wait. She will be learning to play the flute. Tomorrow evening we are going camping with our sunday school class and all their families. But it's suppose to rain!

Birds and flight

Today we discussed some of the reasons birds can fly. Here's our list:
light weight
strong wing muscles
large breast bone
hollow bones
air sacs inside of them
smooth round body
flight feathers

We followed this up by creating some beautiful drawings of birds, and collecting feathers.

introduction

hello,
I'm a homeschool mom from Missouri and I have two little girls. Sarah is 9 yrs old and Rachel is 5 yrs old. We are doing grade3 and kindergarten. I use Christian Liberty Press because they're curriculumn is delightfully simple and easy to use. We've tried lots of others and I just don't have a lot of time to pour through teacher's manuals every night. Christian liberty is easy to understand and light enough that we still have plenty of time in our day to draw on out interests. My girls really enjoy nature studies and art. We are currently studying birds.
