Principle by Principle

First Entry in 2008!

No, I didn't fall off the brink of the earth. And no, I haven't given up on the Principle Approach. Far from it!  Blogging, like many things, has to be a habit. Once you get out of the groove of things, it takes a while to get back. Well, I got out of the groove big time I guess.  Then there was also the time factor. I had wanted to spend more time being a nurturing mom than just talking  about being one.

A little review:

Since the beginning of the year, I haven't been very consistent with my JBC. For a while I also ran out of ideas when it dawned on me that all I really needed to do was to apply the keysheets.

Anyway, I'm now ready to take a break from it so I recently bought Walking with Jesus (WWJ)  when FACE had a nice sale. DD will be in 5th grade next year and WWJ is supposedly for fourth grade but that doesn't really concern me. We're still using The Mighty Works of God and I think that's written for 1st and 2nd graders?  Talking of which, we finally completed our Daniel Boone Lapbook (took us 3-4  weeks). I think that's going to be the last lapbook we'll do for His Story in a while. We tried to make it a BPA Lapbook  that has more meat and all that, but man, it did take a while.  I may stick a picture of it here as soon as I can.

DS starts Kindergarten next year and I'm seriously wondering if I should just succumb and get the Noah's Plan for him. If you have experience with the NP for Kindergarten, I would love to hear from you.

Oh, we're having a little blast making mini-books for our math. That has been a great motivator for my number-phobic dd.  Each day, we also do a little scripture study on why God is concerned with numbers.
She gets to write the reason and the relevant scripture on a page of the mini-book. Pretty cool.

I wish I'd known about the FACE sale. I need to sign up for their newsletters or something. I want to use Walking with Jesus next year. My son will be in fifth grade, too. Isn't is great that the principles are taught at every age?

I did try using the Noah Plan Kindergarten Lessons. They were way too much for us. I used a bit of the Bible and the Geography, but that didn't even last for long. Instead, I focused on phonograms and reading. That was enough.

Peace to you,
Renae

Renae, do sign up for the FACE newsletter. They have some great discounts, like last month, they had the George Washington book at 50% discount. I didn't get it though as I figured it would come around again. Oh, I hope you do Walking with Jesus with your son. I think he will enjoy it. I guess I'm ready to be a bit lazy and not have to prepare so much. I do want to spend more time PAing other subjects. I appreciate your valuable feedback on the Kindergarten NP. It does look very demanding...I will have to really think and pray about it.

So good to see you here again! I love what you share about your school here!
I am also going to get Walking with Jesus for next year for my 3rd grade son and 4th grade daughter. I didnt know about the sale either. ) :
I would love to see your Daniel Boone lapbook. We also did our own Switzerland Lapbook in preparing to read Heidi last year and it was labor intensive to make it PAed but definitely worth it. We have not done one since though.
I have and still use the K Noah Plan. I love it! I used it with my older two together very strictly which was miserable, but I am using it now with my 6yo and 4yo and I only follow it loosely. I love the principles but go about it in a much gentler way. I feel that they require way too much for K. I often find a good book or fun activity to go with the lesson and we discuss the LI and principle. We are mainly focusing on learning to read. I am using the lesson plans for Lit, History, Science and Geography, but only one of these at a time. We are doing Lit. right now. It usually takes us about 10-15 minutes to go through a lesson unless we do a more involved related activity. My two boys love the lessons.

About Me

I have been fairly happy and comfortable "doing" Classical and Charlotte Mason but have recently become interested in incorporating the Principle Approach in our home education. This blog will reflect my journey and learning process using the Principle Approach.
