We have been homeschooling for 3 years. My daughter is almost 6 yet reads at a 3rd grade level and does most everything else at a 2nd grade level. My son, who is nearly 3, is a very hands on child. He also loves to be read to. We will be doing more formal activities (purpose-driven) this coming summer. My second son just turned one and we have fun just reading and playing with household manipulatives. I like to make my own toys when I can. I've noticed children don't stay engaged long at all in store-bought toys, unless they are "life-like" (role playing or sports equipment). I really love the Charlotte Mason way of teaching, which is basically no workbooks and lots of "living books" as opposed to text books.
