Happy Fall Y'all
Happy Fall to my Blogger Buddies! I love this time of year. It's time to begin cooling off from the hot summer. Time to dig through closets to find favorite sweaters. Time to decorate with pumpkins and colorful fall leaves. I'm looking forward to the lovely changes in colors in my neighborhood. Right now my fig tree and grape leaves are beginning to slowly change. I saw a huge yellow mulberry leaf gently drift to the grown the other day while I was outside playing with my kids. I hope you enjoy the new lovely background I'm using, too. I have discovered that it's pretty fun to change out backgrounds with the seasons or my mood. Blessings, Karla |

Something Precious
Don't you just love it when God lets you get a peek inside your child's heart? It's times like these that I treasure the most and keep tucked away. Yesterday I took my sweet 6 year old Matthew with me to run errands. We were listening to KLOVE and the first few bars of a song I'd never heard before started to play. It was very beautiful. Suddenly Matthew's little voice from the backseat piped up and said, "Mom, I heard God talking to me. He told me that He loves me." I had to pause and blink away the tears forming in my eyes before I replied, "Yes, Matthew, He does love you. And when you take the time to listen you'll hear Him more and more." I then sat in line at the bank drive-up window praising God for taking the time to make Himself real to Matthew, and for allowing me to be blessed by being right there when it happened. I believe this is another one of those memories that will pop into my head on Matthew's wedding day. I'm telling you, it'll be by God's grace that I'm not a mess of a crying mom when that day comes. Here is a video and the lyrics to the song we heard. It's titled Divine Romance by Phil Wickham.

Does it feel like Fall is just around the corner? It sure seems that way to me. As a matter of fact, I drank a nice hot cup of tea last night after I'd tucked my sweeties in bed. The Old Schoolhouse Magazine Has Gone High-Tech!
Wow! Have you all seen the new digital magazine published by The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine? This is the most amazing thing I've ever seen! I've been a subscriber to their periodical for three years and I LOVE flipping through the pages of the magazine, smelling the pages (yes I'm a page sniffer), and dog-earring the corners of pages that I want to view again. I've spent lots of time flipping through pages and going back and forth from the magazine to my computer to check out their advertiser's interesting websites. Now I've found an easier way! The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine's digital edition has many features that I enjoy. For starters, I can download the quarterly magazine as soon as it goes to print. I don't have to wait for the mailman (or my neighbor who occasionally gets my mail) to deliver it. I can click a link to check out a resource or reference that catches my attention, and I'm instantly seeing the information I'm interested in viewing. I don't have to worry about my toddler spilling his juice on the pages of my coveted magazine, either. I can save it to my hard drive and it's always available when I need it. The price is also considerably less than the printed version. No printing or mailing costs are needed for the digital version. If you're wondering if you have to wait a few moments for a pdf file to load before you can view the pages, the answer is "No!" With just a click of my mouse the pages turn, just like flipping through the real magazine. I have to use my imagination to get that "print" smell, though. Click here to see a sample of the digital version of The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine. I trust that you'll see firsthand the amazing value in this high-tech digi-mag. If you decide to purchase a yearly subscription to this quarterly-published magazine, you'll also receive 19 FREE gifts from The Old Schoolhouse. Some of these include educational materials from Art of Eloquence, In the Hands of a Child, Teach Magazine, and Write Shop. There are other vendors included, but the ones I mentioned above are from companies I've personally purchased items from. Enjoy! |

Hello Remnants of Dolly
Hurricane Dolly has swung it's way up and is now causing torrential rain in El Paso, TX! We've had almost 5 inches in the past 2 days. This evening it started raining again, hard, and flooded our yard again. Thomas bought a pump the other day that can remove 350 gallons of water per hour. We estimated that approximately 1000 gallons was removed from our back porch. We just turned the pump on again to remove the water that dumped from the sky in less than 20 minutes. It's still making it's chug-a-chug slurping sounds. I was playing around with Smilebox to post some pictures from our back yard. I don't know how this will turn out, but it was fun to try. If I get good at using Smilebox I may just blog more often! The photos are from the first day it flooded. My backyard and porch were getting close to flood levels. The second photo is the pump, held down with a sandbag to keep it from floating away, showing the water level at my door stoop. We were literally minutes away from the water coming in our house. Enjoy the pictures, and know that I truly appreciate what Noah did when he built the ark and survived 40 days of torrential rains.

Fun 4th of July Weekend
Our family had a super fun 4th of July weekend. Thomas and his friend Dave built a monstrous play set in our backyard for the kids. Our old set was falling apart and was here when we bought our house 5 years ago. It took the guys two full days to get it built, but was well worth it. With four kids, we figured they'd get more use out of this one. We've hardly heard any arguing at all. They're too busy playing on the swings, conquering the rock climbing wall, sliding 10 feet down headfirst, and enjoying snacks at the picnic table under the fort to fight. Here's a picture of Lauren, Matthew & Michael posing with their new play set. ![]() The morning of July 4th, I took the kids to see the parade while Thomas played with redwood and power tools. Michael and Ian were safely contained in the double stroller and I allowed the older kids to sit at the curb. You should have seen the enormous amount of candy and other miscellaneous loot they brought home! Our dentist will be so pleased. ![]() After the parade, we went home and watched Daddy and Dave act like Bob the Builder. In the evening, I took the older two kiddos to the swimming pool. We left the pool around 8:30 pm and parked at a church near our house to watch the fireworks. The church is built on a hill, so our view was incredible! The next day we attended a 50th wedding anniversary party for my dear friend Tabitha's parents. We sure had fun! It was held at the Poki Roni Ranch and the kids rode horses, went on a hay ride, had fun getting soaked in a dunking booth, and ran & giggled themselves silly with their friends. Here's Matthew and my friend's daughter on the ponies. ![]() Here's Lauren on a horse. She looks very natural and says she'd like to take riding lessons. We'll see... ![]() I met two of my blogger buddies at the party. My friend Tabitha's nephew is married to Mandi and they have three incredibly beautiful little girls with another sweet baby on the way. I also met Tabitha's niece Hannah and her precious little girl. I had the priviledge of holding her, gushing over her, and remembering what it was like to hold Lauren when she was so tiny! She's very precious and if you click on Hannah's link you'll see that I'm not exaggerating. The hay ride was fun, too. The hay was soft and cushiony, which was good because the ride was bumpy! Here's a picture of Matthew, who had just bobbed for apples ~ Michael, who had just eaten a chocolate chip cookie ~ and blogger buddy Mandi's daughter Maddelyn, who was fresh, clean and all girl. ![]() Here's another cute picture of 15 month old Ian, and Mandi's daughter Caroline. She's about 8 weeks older than Ian and was very curious to see what he was doing in the stroller. "Hey Ian, gimme some of those snacks." ![]() So our weekend is over, tennis camp is starting, and we're getting over the clean-up of another flood at our house. More about that later... |

Photos from Matthew's 6th Birthday Party
Wow did we have fun at Matthew's birthday party! It was 106 degrees so having a swimming party was the best thing we could have done. I didn't get all of the photos I would have liked, but here are a few of my favorites. Here's Daddy grilling food for the hungry swimmers ![]() Matthew's Fish-Themed Cake ![]() Ian with the kids' Godfather, Rick ![]() My sister, Kelly and her son, Jonah ![]() My Mom & Dad ![]() The birthday boy and his best friend ![]() I just missed getting a shot of him blowing out his candles. I'll have to work on my "trigger" finger. ![]() I'm adding this photo in just for fun. As I was cleaning up after the party, the label on the cake box caught my attention. I looked at the weight of the cake and thought to myself, "Hey, this will make good blog material!" When Matthew was born he weighed 6 lbs. 10.5 oz. How coincidental is that? ![]() See what I mean? ![]() |

Out of the Mouths of Babes
Today was a fun day! Matthew turned 6 years old today. To see my tribute to my NICU graduate, look at the previous post to this one. Since it was also Father's Day, we spent the day honoring Thomas. The kids made cards for him, along with coupons. He can't wait to have some help with the yard work! I sure do love you, Thomas and I'm blessed to watch you with our kids. You're a wonderful Daddy and we're happy to have a life with you! I showed Matthew his birth photos and NICU photos. As he gets older, he understands more of his story. Even as a little child, though, he amazed me with comments on things he remembered. For instance, when he was the Ambassador Child for March of Dimes, we were guest speakers at a ministry luncheon. He was about 3 1/2 at the time. I had always told him that Jesus healed him when he was a baby. I didn't get into details about the number of IV's he had, the tests that were run, the pain involved, etc. Anyway, while we were speaking to our audience, our conversation went something like this. Me: "Matthew, what did Jesus do for you when you were in NICU?" Matthew: "He comforted me." (I was expecting him to say that Jesus healed him, since that's what he usually said.) Me: "Matthew, what else did Jesus do for you?" Matthew: "He protected me." (By now I was a crying mess. It hit me that Jesus was very real and very present to Matthew while he was a newborn who was unable to comprehend the pain and agony associated with getting hundreds of IV's, being intubated, etc.) Me: "Matthew, what else did Jesus do for you?" Matthew: "He healed me!" He was so innocent, yet excited, about what God had done for him that all of us were momentarily speechless. It was a good thing that plenty of Kleenex was handy that afternoon! So tonight as I was tucking Matthew in bed I said, "I'm so glad that you're here with us, Matthew. I hope your 6th birthday was fun. Tomorrow is your party and it's going to be so nice to watch you play with your friends." He hugged me really tight when I kissed him goodnight and said, "Mommy, I'm glad God held on to me when I was a baby. How come He's never let go?" I said, "He loves you so much that He'll never let go of you." Then I hugged him even tighter and softly sang this song that came to my mind. It was "You Never Let Go" by Matt Redman. I'm glad my big boy still loves to be sung to. And I'm even more glad that out of the mouth of my child comes profound sayings ~ sayings on which I can reflect and rejoice. After our song, I prayed these words over him. "Thank you, Jesus, that you've never let go of Matthew. Thank you for being right there with him when I was helpless to do anything for him. Thank you for being his comforter, protector and healer. Thank you for sending this precious boy into my heart. Watch over him as he grows. Guide him when his path is rough. Bless him with many more years and fun birthdays. In the name of Jesus, Amen." Here's the song by Matt Redman titled "You Never Let Go" that I sang to Matthew tonight. |

Prayer Request
Just a reminder to please continue praying for Tricia Lawrenson. If any of you have been following her husband's blog, then you'll know she's back at Duke for more testing on her lungs. This is a letdown, for sure, since they had already gone back to their home at the OBX (Outer Banks, for those of us desert rats) with their new baby, Gwyneth. They had only been home a few short days when they received a call from Duke that they needed to get back for more testing. This family is amazing, they are full of faith, and I'm blessed each time I read Nate's blog updates. Please go check out his blog, and keep them in your prayers. http://cfhusband.blogspot.com/ Hugs, Karla |

Matthew's Kindergarten Graduation
My sweet little guy Matthew graduated from Kindergarten the other day. I can't believe how much he's grown! There were four homeschool families who participated in our Kindergarten graduation ceremony. The kids wore blue caps and gowns, complete with tassles. Each mom presented her child with a diploma, certificates of accomplishments, and a trophy. One of the moms even downloaded "Pomp and Circumstance" on her iPod and played it on a stereo as the kids walked into the room. We held the ceremony at Incredible Pizza Company. The kids had a blast! It really is a fun place to eat and play. Here are some pictures from our memorable day. Here's Matthew getting ready to receive his diploma. Isn't he cute? ![]() Here I am giving him his diploma and certificates from Herbert Christian Academy. Ian was busy trying to figure out why Mommy was choked up as I spoke. We honored him for his excellence in reading, excellence in math, and improvement in handwriting. ![]() Here's a very happy 5 year old with his even prouder Daddy. ![]() We sure do love you, Matthew! We are so proud of your hard work this year. It was your first year to be at home with us for homeschool, and you did an excellent job in Kindergarten. I can't wait to see how much you grow and learn next year in 1st grade. You truly are a gift from God. |

Happy Memorial Day
Happy Memorial Day to all of you! What a blessing it is to live in the United States of America. The freedoms we enjoy are countless, and the price paid by those serving in our military is amazing. Without them serving with honor, bravery and loyalty we wouldn't have the many freedoms we take for granted. I personally want to thank my father-in-law Thomas, my mother-in-law Jan, my step father-in-law, Tom, my sister-in-law Susanne and her husband Brent, and my brother-in-law Tim. Because of your dedication and honor to our country, I honor you. I can't even begin to wrap my head around the things you've seen, the horrors you've witnessed, nor the pain you've felt. So I thank you, with heartfelt gratitude. I love you all very much! Our community pool held a Memorial Day BBQ today. After Michael and Ian took their naps, I dressed everyone in their swimsuits, got them all buckled in their car seats, and was ready to go. Thomas locked-up the house, came outside and said, "Hey, let's take a family photo by our flag." So I unbuckled everyone, got them to stand still long enough for Thomas to set the timer on the camera, and here's our photo. I know it's hard to see us up close, but the flag is the most important part of this photo. ![]() We had a great time at the pool, saw some friends we hadn't seen in quite awhile, and ran into a really great couple we hadn't seen in a long time. They are expecting baby #2 and have the cutest little 2 year old girl. I hope to see them often throughout the summer. I liberally applied waterproof sunscreen on the kids, but Matthew managed to get a sunburn on his face. Lauren is already turning a pretty shade of tan (she gets that from her Daddy) and the little guys and Mommy had fun in the kiddie pool. Ian loved to splash in the water! Michael chased after a ball and frisbee. The water only came up to his belly, but he was so cute pretending to swim. He dunked his head under a few times to blow bubbles, but would occasionally get water in his nose. He didn't like that one bit! I hope all of you enjoyed a peaceful Memorial Day. May God bless you this Summer. |

Restaurante de Herbert
Tonight my kids decided to turn our library into a restaurant. It was so cute. 9 year old Lauren made a business plan, which my financial advisor hubby thought was amazing. She decided in order to start her restaurant she'd need food, tables and chairs, and employees. The kids went through the pantry and made menus. Then they set the kid table and the first diners arrived shortly thereafter. ![]() Here's 5 year old Matthew and 2 year old Michael looking over the menu . "Hmmm , what to have ~ what to have." ![]() Lauren was wearing my apron that I bought from Leanne Ely's website www.savingdinner.com She has one that reads, "I'm Saving Dinner 2" but it was dirty. Mine fits her pretty well. ![]() She waited on the boys, then fixed their meal and brought it to them. It was so cute! They sure had fun! Michael was clapping and saying, "Yeah! SUPPER!!!" ![]() I love when they spend the evening having fun, without fighting. I thought their creativity was worth sharing. |

Please, please pray that she will be able to enjoy a beautiful life with her husband, Nate, and their newborn, Gwyneth, who is still in NICU. Blessings to all, Karla |

The Lord is Risen!
I hope everyone had a very lovely Easter Sunday yesterday. I woke up early, with a heart full of gladness! After my first cup of coffee I was even more glad! ![]() After church we came home and took some family photos and some of the kids. ![]() I love this one with the kids sitting in their birth order like stair steps. Aren't they cute? ![]() I had a song in my head that I kept singing over and over. I finally typed in a search for it, and I found it on YouTube. The first time I heard this song was when I was living in California in 1986. Just thinking about Jesus being resurrected and walking on this Earth again was amazing enough. But to hear Sandi Patty sing this song "Was It A Morning Like This" touched a spot in my heart that blesses me each time I listen to it. < |

Happy 1st Birthday, Ian!
My baby boy turned ONE year old on March 20th. Happy Birthday, Ian! We celebrated his birthday today. We kept the party small, since he's small. It was Ian (of course), me, Thomas, Lauren, Matthew, and Michael. Also attending were his godparents, Rick & Yoli. My mom and sister, Kelly, surprised us with their presence. I didn't think I was going to see them until next week, so I was so elated when they knocked on the front door! They also brought along a very special guest, my nephew Jonah! I'll never forget the day Ian was born! I always wanted a Spring baby. During the seven long years of infertility I would ache each Spring when the birds were chirping, the flowers were blooming, and the fresh green smell was wafting through my doors and windows. Yet, I always carried this hope inside of me. When my other kiddos were born (Lauren in August, Matthew in June, and Michael in October) I was so happy that I didn't consider whether it was early Spring or not. When I found out I was going to have another baby shortly after turning 40, and that I was due in March, my heart SANG! How gracious of God to create new life for this OLD mama. :0) Ian's name is Scottish for "God is gracious." We didn't know if he was a boy or girl before his birth, so we chose either Ian or Charis (Greek for grace.) I'll always cherish this moment, the moment of his birth and the first time I held him. ![]() Here's my tiny guy right after he was cleaned up. ![]() This is our very first family photo with all 6 of us in it. ![]() Here are some photos from this past year in review... Ian with Thomas' mom, Jan. Ian and Grandma Jan share the same birthdate! ![]() Ian and his Daddy ![]() Ian with his Godparents Rick & Yoli at his baptism dinner. Rick is also a priest, so he baptized Ian. It was a lovely day! ![]() Ian visiting the farm at Thanksgiving, showing Grandaddy Frank his new teeth. ![]() Ian's first snow! ![]() Ian's birthday cake ![]() Ian & Mommy as we got ready to sing the Happy Birthday song. ![]() YES!!! Cake!!! ![]() Ian with his Godparents ![]() Ian with big sister, Lauren & Aunt Kelly and cousin Jonah ![]() Ian with big brother Matthew ![]() Ian with Daddy and big brother Michael ![]() Ian and Daddy ![]() Ian taking a break from eating cake to love on Grandma Fannie ![]() Ian and Grandma. When she squeezes his cheeks like this his face reminds me of one of my baby pictures! ![]() I love this picture! His cap was so cute. It read, "Fun to be One." ![]() Ian tasting his new book. "Hey, this doesn't taste like cake!" ![]() On a final note, tomorrow is Easter Sunday. May you be blessed by the goodness of God. I'm constantly amazed at the utmost gracious sacrifice Jesus made for us. |
