The Reason Herein

Sep. 27, 2007 - Review: I Capture the Castle

"I write this sitting in the kitchen sink.  That is, my feet are in it; the rest of me is on the draining-board, which I have padded with our dog's blanket and the tea-cosy.  I can't say that I am really comfortable, and there is the depressing smell of carbolic soap, but this is the only part of the kitchen where there is any daylight left."   ~I Capture the Castle, by Dodie Smith

I Capture the Castle

Isn't that the perfect beginning to a book?  Well, not the perfect beginning.  That would be,

"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good forture must be in want of a wife."  Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen

Anyway, I Capture the Castle is written from the perspective of 17 year old Cassandra.  She lives in a dilapidated English castle with her family.  They leased the castle when times were good with the intention of fixing it up.  That didn't happen, though, and now they scrimp to make ends meet.  Hence, she savors the light to write by so as to not use her precious candle.

The book is filled with wit and dry humor.  Very much an English book.  If you haven't read it, you are missing a wonderful book.

(But, don't watch the movie.  It was dark and weird.  I only watched half.)

Now I will have to look this up at the library! When I placed a hold on Austenland I was at least #45 so you'll move up quickly. I have another book on hold that I was #70-something and now am down in the 30's it's called Peony in Love by Lisa See a completely different genre from Jane Austen or Regency type stories but I enjoyed the authors previous book and talk about a tear jerker! Have a great weekend!

Nov. 11, 2007 - perfect opening to a book

I totally agree with your opinion that Pride and Prejudice has the perfect opening. It's so clever! So witty! So fresh and different! So funny. It wraps the story up completely in one sentence, and makes me want to "unwrap" it.

The castle story looks fun. I'll check it out someday if I have any spare time at all.
