New Business

September 30th, 2010

My 12 year old daughter and I have launched a new business – Vision Herbs and Gifts.  We are making and selling hand lotion, baby bottom cream, deodorant, lip balm, herbal salve, and two tea blends – wellness tea and stress relief tea.  Here is our current website.  http://visionherbsandgifts.bigcartel.com/

This whole thing is very exciting and challenging.  But I see really good things coming out in my dd.  She is taking initiative, making labels, designing the business card,  setting up and decorating the table at the WEd. farmer’s market we are going to.

Charles Martin

May 1st, 2010

I discovered a new novelist this year who I am really excited about.  His name is Charles Martin and he has about 7 or 8 novels out.  So far I have read 4 of them and every single book has been top notch.
Last night I finished Chasing Firelies  and my response is "deep".  I feel like I need to read the book again because I think I missed alot of good stuff.  It is a story of fathers and sons and of the need for boys to have a father.  Powerful themes and beautiful writing.   Mr. Martin is a Christian and publishes with a Christian publishing house and his writing reflects that, but he is not preachy.  I don’t care for preachy writers.  One of the mantras for good writing, is "Show, don’t tell."  Mr. Martin shows.  But he also handles delicate and private matters with discretion.  He does not use gratuitous s’x or violence, something for which I am also very grateful.

Happy New Year

January 1st, 2010

It is the AM of January 1st 2010.   The year ended with some unresolved business challenges and as I was praying this morning I believe God brought a scripture to my mind that I have decided to adopt as a theme for 2010.
Lamentations 2:22-26
"Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not.  They are new every morning; Great is your faithfulness.  The Lord is my portion says my soul, Therefore I hope in Him.  The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who Seeks him.  It is good that one should hope and wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord."

Quote on families and their importance

November 22nd, 2009

"Christian
homes and churches are the only institutions in which our children will learn to find themselves in God’s story. When they are united more by the trends of pop culture than by the faith and practice of the whole church in all times and places, our youth become victims of our sloth. We should not be surprised that over half of those reared in evangelical homes and churches today do not join or even attend a church regularly when they go off to college. If we are going to see our children grow up into Christ instead of abandoning the church, our
spiritual life at home and in the church must incorporate them into the teaching and fellowship of the apostolic faith. They can find "ministry opportunities" through United Way, the Peace Corps, or Habitat for Humanity. They can find friends at the fraternity or sorority. They can find intellectual stimulation in class. And they can find a sense of meaning and purpose in their vocations. If their home churches exchanged the ministry of preaching and teaching the apostles’ doctrine for a variety of ministries and activities that they could find legitimate versions of in the world, then it is difficult to come up with a reasonable answer when they ask, "Why do I need the church?"
