Story of Ping Lapbook
Hello, Faithful Readers, Friends and Visitors…
My 5 year old daughter that I refer to as my Bumblebee and I have finally started her Five In A Row Volume 1 Curriculum (again).
See we started Ping last year school year 2007-2008 to see if it would work for us a trial run but, we had already started another curriculum and I just didn’t want to drop it at that time.
I wanted to wait even though we discovered it would work wonderfully for the both of us, especially turning each book into a Lapbook and trying to include as much of the subjects we could.
(I am thinking of doing Before Five In A Row Books also as Lapbooks with her).
So here we are Oct. 2008-2009 Ready to begin Five in A Row Volume 1.
We are starting with The Story of Ping by Marjorie Flack (we are taking two weeks to study it’s always safest to plan that way for us).
Illustrator :Kurt Wiese Copyright 1933,
Catergory :Classic
Objective:
That one’s consequences for one mistakes are far better than what else could happen.
Since We began to make our lapbook last year and you can too by visiting OUR PING LAPBOOK visit in right margin. I decided this year to pick up with Bumblebee from the beginning.
I researched for new and fresh ideas and I was inspired to expand on our Lapbook when I found this WEBSITE and this video by Loni from Lapbook Lessons.

Below is what we have done our First Week Into the Study:
Monday Oct. 20th:
*We didn’t read Ping today because she is familiar with the story from doing it prior and wasn’t up to it. *
Math: Bumblebee spent time in her Math Curriculum Called Math U See and we had added some math to her lapbook before and added some supplement today.
Printed up 68 ducks, counted, colored ping’s family (this was already completed and in her Lapbook but, we recounted).
M & M Math Count:
We used this book:
Then we took 2 a little larger than regular size packs and 1 regular size pack and grouped by color and counted each color.
(We did however discover there were almost 300 M & M’s in the three bags total).
Bumblebee filled in her graph of how many she had of each color and she learned she had more blue M & M’s than any other color and then how many she had left in each color after sharing her M & M’s
(Not to worry mom made up bags for the kids).
Bumblebee’s Phonics She Worked On:
Tuesday Oct. 21st:
We read Ping Today, she wanted to read it today.
She worked on her Math U See and then we counted Ping’s Family again and did some coloring.
Science Section: We Discussed our Water Safety–didn’t stay on the topic long for we discussed lots of water safety over the summer.
The Sun how it rises in the east and sets in the west, talking about the Yangtze River.
Social Studies Section: Today She worked on China’s flag, Capital, What Continent is China in? and Her Map of China along with using different mediums.
She also cut out her Duck and Cormorant Cards for her lapbook:
Wednesday Oct. 22nd:
Bumblebee wasn’t feeling well today.
She did however work on her Math U See and review certain sections of her lapbook that she had worked on yesterday, and or throughout the day I would ask her questions (regarding the story) and she would supply the answers.
So all in all a review Ping Lapbook Day.
Later she was feeling a little better so we went to the library to pick out some books on Ducks together.
Books We Read this Week in Addition to Ping:
Guess Who, Baby Duck by Amy Hest
It’s Quacking Time! by Martin Waddell
A Dozen Ducklings Lost and Found by Harriet Ziefert
and We are adding in Another Five in A Row Book or tying it in with Ping and that’s:
Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey (we will come back to this book later for a lapbook or review of ping).
Our Thursday Oct. 22nd and Friday Oct. 23rd:
Math: Math U See Bumblebee worked on and we worked on Some Addition Sheets and Addition Strips from here and our Cuisenaire Rods although those didn’t work out for Bumblebee for she is used to her Math U See Manipulatives but, we did use her addition strips and addition board we actually got the idea some time back from this Lady’s Website she reposted the site for she has been using some of the sheets herself.
I dumped the Math Manipulative box and allowed her to check them out:
Science: We have added different types of ducks to bumblebee’s lapbook.
Language Arts: Her and I Filled in and illustratd some of her comprehension questions.
Science: We briefly discussed the life cycle of a duck, some duck facts and the anatomy of a duck but, we will be going over these things again next week.
Art: She has done some more coloring in her lapbook with different mediums, some of her copywork and it’s erase wipe so she can do it over and over.
Math: We added a extra flip flap with a pocket inside to include a couple more things about ducks such as connect the dots counting 1-50 on erase wipe duck feet on the pocket and inside the pocket we have draw a line to match the duck parts.
She also worked on her Leap Frog workbook from the dollar store Reading and Writing while she listened to her Leap Frog 1-2-3 Sing CD.

She will be done On Wednesday with her Ping lapbook in the sense that she is ready to move on to another book.
We have also watched a movie (nothing to do with ducks though but, discussing halloween).
We have watched two cooking shows one making tacos and one carving pumpkins. –Bumblebee says she never wants to eat duck but, I think the next time we are out for chinese in a buffet setting we may get her to try it.
She has played hide and seek with her brothers counting to 30.
We have also made peanut butter playdough and buckeyes yes, I know having nothing to do with Ping but, it was fun. *We are hoping to do a homemade chinese meal this weekend* (Will update on that).
She has also worked on her Leapfrog workbooks from the dollar store she finished up her Kindergarten one and moved on to the 1st grade one.
