Grocery Store Blues

I went to the grocery store this afternoon and am still amazed that there are no longer young men willing to take groceries to the car (bag boys).  There are probably several reasons that this has occured over the past 10-15 years including the fact that most of us no longer carry cash to use for tips.  There was a young man checking me out (as in using the register ) and was complaining because he was going to have to retrieve the buggies (shopping carts for some of you) from outside.  Oh poor kid, if you would help us out with our groceries, you could bring the carts right back in!  Some of us really could use the help.  An older woman was parked next to me.  She was finishing up placing her groceries in her truck.  This lady used an electronic buggy to get around the store, and no one helped her out with her purchases!

UGH!  I was glad to get home and have my three sons bring in the load for me.

Our local Safeway store still will help carry stuff. I imagine soon, that will change too. Sad..

It saddens me that common courtesy seems to be going the way of the dinosaurs. I'm always so dissapointed when I see men that won't hold the door open for a young woman carrying a baby carrier at church or even people tailgating on the highway. It's really all the same...me first...I'm special and can't be bothered with it...my time is more important than yours...so on and so on. Oh Corey, this is one of my pet peeves, I better stop.
I pray the move has gone well and everyone is settling in. I know it won't probably feel like home for a while but one day you'll wake up and it will be just that :-)!
Blessings, Julie

I totally agree with you. These days you pretty much have to ask for help if you want it. We used to have a grocery store here in town that closed a couple years ago, but they used to carry your groceries out for you. It made me feel so special :)

was checking you out! lol

Yes, it's sad huh. We are lucky if the teens don't run us over when we go into the building. I blame it on all the humanistic feeling good about one self stuff they push in the schools now days. Everyone is "entitled" and demands their rights - and who cares about anyone else. (end of soapbox for the moment). sigh. What will it be like by the time we get old?

Wow! I know here no one ever offers but if you ask, they'll do it. Probably begrudgingly...
(is that spelled right?)

The past couple of times at my regular grocery store, I've had to bag my own groceries. And the last time, while I was sacking my own, two young employees were lounging in the patio furniture right at the end of the checkout lanes. It was so aggravating to see them right there, yet no one to help sack the groceries. I rarely get riled, but I did ask to speak to a manager and suggested to her that perhaps the young men could take their breaks somewhere else so it wasn't as obvious that I wasn't being helped!

Ahh, I know and understand. We have baggers here that work only for tips to take your groceries out to the car. I always want to hit them on the head, knock them out, and drag them home to help me carry all my groceries in the house!! hehe
About the older woman, that's awful!! Unfortunately, it doesn't surprise me however, it just saddens me!

They call that "women's lib", ugh!!! You are too young to remember, but we used to have our gas pumped by the station attendant. I thought pumping my own gas was the worst thing "women's lib" had offered me, and still do. I like being a women and all that goes with it.

Since we've moved to small townville, I've noticed a huge shift in how you are treated. People are friendlier, they wave as you go along, and are generally very helpful. One of my pet peeves from the big city was that store clerks wouldn't ask you if you needed help, or if you asked them anything, they looked at you, like, DUH? Here, people seem to know what they are doing and come to YOU to ask if you need assistance. IF you make eye contact, bingo, you have assitance. Very nice. Where do you live where they are called buggies? Haven't heard of that one!
