I'm a little sore today with my hand injury, so I copied a great little article from IMOM.com about reading this summer. As you know,Reading is one of the most important things you can do for, and with, your children this summer. So, I challenge you to begin a new habit - set up a reading program for your kids with rewards... get involved with a local library... get started today! I'm going to try to get around and say hello, but like I mentioned above... my typing is limited today - I'm reading all your posts though
Here's a list of four books you can turn to for advice:
- The New York Times Parent's Guide to the Best Books for Children
- Great Books for Boys, by Kathleen Odean
- Great Books for Girls, by Kathleen Odean
- The Read-Aloud Handbook: Sixth Edition, by Jim Trelease
- Best Books: Kindergarten Through High School, by Donna Hess
Once you've settled on the books your children will, hopefully, enjoy, try these three tips for getting them to actually read:
- Keep a reading log: A reading log can be a great incentive, because at certain achievement points, (5 books, 10 books, etc.) you give your child a reward.
- Create a reading chair or a reading corner: Younger children, especially, like to have a designated spot where they can read. Choose a chair or comfortable pillow, and put it somewhere peaceful and inviting. You can even let your children make a sign that says, "Reading Corner." Keep your children's books in this area, along with their reading logs.
- Tie-in your books to summer activities: If you're taking a vacation, get books related to your destination. If you're going to the zoo, a water park, or the beach, find books that tie-in. When your child expresses an interest in a subject, try to immediately find some books that relate. Strike why the iron is hot!
- Have a book exchange with other families: Asking your friends for the names of books their children enjoy can give you even more ideas. Meet with your friends once month, or weekly to exchange books your kids have enjoyed.
