Well my blog has changed so I can post more pictures for family the address is http://sparkshomeacademy.blogspot.com/ So click here and come visit! |

So I finally figured out how to post picture so I decided to unveil our schoolroom for 2007-2008.
This is in the corner by the window, it is our whiteboard(complete with reminders for the kids and things we have discussed. The magazine racks on the cubbies hold my teachers key one for each kid. The black drawers have papers and craft stuff for our hands on activities. And our table where we do our work.
This is our bookcase that hold our extra history books and reference section. We use our encyclopedia's a lot. The basket up top holds our history books we will use in the next year, we try not to buy a bunch because we don't have a whole bunch of storage and they tend to get lost in moves. Each years book are put in a big rubbermaid bin for the next go around. This is on the same wall as the black drawer, there is a bookcase in between.

Well we are coming to a close with the 18th century, finally, we will be studying some famous scientists this week. We will study the Curies, Pasteur and the guy who discovered X-rays (my planning sheet is upstairs) we will also talk about the Salvation Army and the Spurgeons. Saturday we are registering for our co-op classes, I am so excited we are number 2 out of 114, man I had a lucky day in March. Last fall we were 100 and by the luck of the draw we are 2, the kids are jazzed. We start back the Saturday after Labor day. Please keep dh in your prayers he has an interview on Tuesday with a great company someplace he would love to work. I think we are both real drained with this job search and after 4 months we would love to close this chapter. My goals for this week are: type up my lesson plans for all 3 of my co-op classes so I can turn them in pay bills (how depressing is that) on Monday wash our sheets and towels
Talk with MUS person about fraction issues with dd I hope you have a wonderful week and those who are starting their first week good luck and I hope you have a great week! |

This is our week in review with pictures, my friend Trivium Academy's idea. It is also great for family to see what we are doing and let's see how wonderfully I can explain
This is my ds #1 notebook page on money (he was suppose to draw a reproduction of a dollar) and put on our timeline pictures for the week and talk about counterfeit.
This is my dd's booklet's that explain the Progressive, Populists and Muckrackers party. This is also her daily math practice pages, it is from the free pages. She actually did really well by only missing one, math is a struggle for her.
This is ds#2 geography page we are doing Trail Guide to US geography and this is his map page on New York. I really like Trail Guide but I don't think the kids love it, they don't loathe it so it works.
Alright and these are our statue of liberty's project we have been working on for about a month now! We were to make a replica of the statue out of water bottles, we learned model magic and we were suppose to paint. We had to construct the arms, crown and book out of a combo of wire, tape and pipe cleaners. WE haven't painted them yet and honestly we kind of like them this way. So that was our week in review! Share yours! |

three wonderful kids who know that we do history last each day and they also know if it is not done on Thursday they have to do it on Friday-our day off. They are upstairs right now, before school has even started, finishing it up. I just love it! |

Well this week we are studying George Washington Carver and political parties (specifically the muckrackers, populists and progressives). I am lightening up so that we can get through with the 1800's before Labor Day. So I have almost this week done with planning and such. We are starting a new Bible curriculum a little bit more of what I wanted, the devotionals we use are great but the kids try to get through them too quickly and don't absorb it. Things I need to do this week:
|
|
This time it is a Bible resource- multi-age. It is designed like Sonlight a little bit. We are going to start with year 2 tomorrow. http://www.annesschoolplace.com/productsBible.htm
It looks really good! I love something that you can use over and over again. I have also found a free grid logic puzzle board. We can go through these Critical Thinking Press books about one every three weeks but at $9.99 they are no longer in the budget. This is free, just pick one and you can have your kids do it on their own paper. So far there is 396 puzzle multi level so it will last you awhile

We interrupt this blog to tell you the Homeschool Open House is a couple of post beneath. I am a flunkie when it comes to reading direction and linked my blog instead of a post. OHHH well who said homeschoolers are conformers? We have been using this for last month instead of the Evan-Moor's daily review. We like it a lot better, it covers one of every operation and does include fraction, decimals and word problems. http://www.aea11.k12.ia.us/prodev/math/mentalmath/dailyreview.html and http://www.aea11.k12.ia.us/E2T2/dmr.html They have two different sets of them available, I burned my to a cd, since I homeschool three kids, I just took it down to Kinko's and had it printed out. That way it was all done and I didn't have to stress with my home printer. It only cost me about $8 to print out over 200 pages. |

IF you are here for the Open House, I am not good at reading directions Our plans this week, hopefully this week we will find out if dh gets the job he has interviewed for three times. Please if you feel led pray for him, it would be a great job. And one that he would really enjoy, one that would keep him busy with lots of different things. He is a big multi-tasker and this would be great for him. This week with our school we are studying Child Immigration and Labor Issues in the 1800's. We are going to be learning about the reform that took place, child labor laws and strikes. We are continuing to work on our Statue of Liberty project, we are suppose to be finishing up this week but it is not going to happen this week. We are still waiting for our co-op schedule to come out, it will most likely be this week since we are going to be registering at the end of this month. I am in hopes to talk me dd into taking Sign Language, so she can get a jump start on some more of her high school credit. Plus I think she is very talented in that area. One year while we were at the beach she came across a girl in the ocean who was deaf. She was able to sign to her and dazzled her cousins at the same time. She had taken a co-op class while in 5th grade but they had not finished even half the book, well about a week after co-op ended she was ground and so she just finished the book. The child remembered everything she was taught and learned on her own. Monday the kids will turn in there first essay with our new curriculum-CQLA. We in the past have used Classical Writing which came with its own grading system. So I was rather bummed yesterday when I realized I need to make up my own. Ohhh well I know this will work better for my kids anyway, I can tailor it to each kid. So I was up until late hours working on that but I will not have to do that again for awhile. Things to do this week:

Welcome to our Homeschool Open House! We have been homeschooling for 9 years we have 3 blessings who are 13,12 and 10yo. We live in the great state of Texas and so we start school in July to avoid boredom that being stuck inside causes. We are going into our 3rd year of using Tapestry of Grace and absolutely love it! TOG has been the best thing that has happened to our homeschooling. We are also using a Language arts program called Character Quality Language Arts, while I am enjoying it, it does seem to go at a quick pace for the kids. It is our first year for it, but being a person not tied down to my curriculum I have slowed the pace down for my kids. Math U See is our math program and we are going into our second year of using it. For science we go to a co-op and take it there which is wonderful for us! Our schedule for the day (and I use the word schedule loosely we don't let our time chock us! We easily adapt to the day) 9:00 chore and team work time 9:30 start school work with Character Building for Families and a logic puzzle 10:00 or sooner! Start all their individual subjects! this includes devotional, logic, math, cqla, geography and health (for my oldest) anything but TOG is done during this time (includes co-op homework) 12:00 LUNCH 1:00 TOG we normally try to work an hour and a half! And they are to do there reading and notebooking and anything on their assignment sheet! We also have a discussion time at least once during the week |

Yep we found this sweet thing on the side of our garage. It is about 4 inches long, we have had other smaller getting in the house. This one can stay in our garage it is huge. The babies that find there way in the house must go! Even though I am a little scared to skish them. |

Now it is not so distructive or at least to me as most people might think an addiction to be. But as for me every Tuesday is a special day and it is because of this guy: I just love Dog! My sons love Dog! And I think he is great, we say an interview last night on Larry King live, only saw half of it. And needless to say I can't wait until this book comes out next week. I love that he truly tries to make a difference in these people's life and doesn't just lock them back up. I am however truly bummed his book tour is not coming to my state! |

Our week has been very uneventful, my dh went on a great interview on Monday and we are still waiting to here. We are praying and hoping this is one, so far this is the only one that has been remotely interested. It sounds like a great job and one dh I think would really enjoy. We are still studying immigration this week and Grover Cleveland (notice that I did spell it correctly not like on my kids sheets GROOVER). We are also working on our model of the Statue of Liberty, which has turned into quite a little project to say the least. So far we have made the arm and torch and affixed it too the water bottle. Today we are going to work on the book arm. We are also getting into the "Captains of Industry" and who they were and how they earned the millions. We are anxiously waiting for the co-op schedule to come out, we are going to be registering on the 3rd Saturday this month. So dd comes and asks every morning did it come out yet, nope not yet. I can't believe it is so close to co-op time already. I am trying to get my classes planned, in fact I am waiting for one of book studies I am using to come by Mr. UPS dude. I have most of the weather class I am teaching planned. My literature class I don't think will be much work to plan it, I just need to re-read those two books again. My geography class is a little more work, it is hard to do a U.S geography study for 1st-3rd graders that isn't too much and still fun. Cantering the Country is way too much and so I am piece it together. Ohh well that is our week so far! |

Well this week we are going to be studying Immigration and the Statue of Liberty. We will start by watching an A&E documentary on the Statue to give us a change of pace, maybe that is something I should try and do more often. This week we are starting our new LArts programs, CQLA we finally got it in the mail last Monday after waiting for the revisions. It looks really good, so we will start it slowly this week. I am looking forward to it, it is a great program just what I have been looking for, for awhile. I am almost done planning one of my co-op classes, my weather class I am still looking for a couple of things. But for the most part I am done, I have my book and movie list done, I am trying to settle on a little project for 1st-3rd graders. I haven't come up with anything concrete my first thought was have them write a newspaper article like they were covering a news story. But then I could not find the blank newspaper poster sheets I was looking for so I abandoned that idea quickly. So I am still pondering.... My list of things to get done this week: - - -plan one of my co-op classes (let's do geography this week) - - That is it for the week! |

and it is down a couple of posts!

They will also this week make a State of Liberty Trivia notebook page where they will try to stump their siblings. Also they will start to work on a model of the state made of plastic water bottles, it will take us 3 weeks to complete it.
